Clash of Realms: Bishop Tobin, Representative Kennedy, and Church-State Entanglement.

Thomas J. Tobin, bishop of the Roman Catholic diocese of Providence, Rhode Island has apparently instructed Rep. Patrick Kennedy not to present himself for Holy Communion due to the latter’s pro-abortion stance and his public statements asserting that his standing as a Catholic is unaffected by his dissent from the unwavering and well-known position of the Church on this issue.

Is this an inappropriate and possibly illegal violation of much-vaunted “separation of church and state”? Is this cause for the Catholic Church to lose its tax exempt status? No on both counts. Let me explain why, while also explaining how this doesn’t represent any sort of alternate theocratic state existing within US borders (a charge I can already hear coming from those who wish to equate this row with the desire of Islamists to have autonomous areas within the States where they can impose shari’a).

The Catholic Church is and has been a supernatural institution founded by God among men while He was in the flesh on earth. It exists to be God’s earthly channel of graces; to manifest God’s love on earth through a visible institution; to help souls get to heaven through knowledge and acceptance of, and a life live in accordance with, God’s love. The Church exists to teach, lead, and sanctify. This divine charge includes the responsibility to correct errant teaching to prevent heresy and, if need be, to make examples of those who cause scandal so that others might not be led astray by mixed signals concerning God’s truth.

The Church does not exist to be a secular ruler, to establish economic systems, to dictate governing policy, or to anoint kings. Various popes, cardinals, archbishops, bishops, monsignors, etc. have wielded significant secular power through the millenia, to be sure, but this was always a result of the circumstances of the day, the personal ambition of the prelate in question, or some combination of circumstances where the religious authority and secular power , and was never the explicit purpose of the office of the prelate or of the Church.

Abortion is one of the issues which the Church repeatedly, clearly, unwaveringly has said is morally reprehensible. Unlike issues such as the level to which a government should provide a social safety net for the poor, how strict environmental protection laws should be, or even the death penalty, where there are prudential judgments involved based on many factors, abortion is a clear, black-and-white issue: it is wrong. Period. Repugnant to God’s law of life and love. Even the Hyde amendment is not as strict as the Catholic Church is on these issues (it’s not the child’s fault he or she was conceived in rape or incest).

Bishop Tobin is the shepherd of the diocese of Providence, which includes the entire state of Rhode Island. Patrick Kennedy is one of his spiritual children. Bishop Tobin is the chief teacher of his diocese. He has spiritual responsibility for all people–Catholic and non–in his diocese. Patrick Kennedy supports the “right” to abortion, and even supports forcing all Americans to pay for abortions (he voted against the Stupak amendment).

Kennedy’s support for abortion “rights” signifies a significant breach of communion with the Catholic Church. Like the God who animates her, the One who named Himself, “I AM WHO AM,” The Catholic Church is what she is at her deepest level. While disciplines, liturgies, orders, and other aspects of her life on earth can and do change from time to time so she might address the contemporary milieu more directly, she does not change in her essentials. An institution founded and guided by a God who does not change cannot itself change. While abortion may have become a political football, the defense of life is first and foremost an issue of God’s sovereignty, and therefore one in which the Church has been interested since the earliest disciples evangelized pagan cultures that practiced human sacrifice (indeed, since the prophets of various Ba’als were depose and their altars torn down by the prophets of old, considering the continuum of Jewish-Christian history as the same revelation of the one God).

Over the past few weeks Bishop Tobin has tried to meet with Congressman Kennedy to discuss the abortion issue and its implications for Kennedy’s standing as a Catholic. In a letter concerning the potential meeting, Representative Kennedy said, “The fact that I disagree with the hierarchy on some issues does not make me any less of a Catholic.”

Bishop Tobin responded publicly on the merits of that statement, and not on the topic of healthcare legislation. He said (all bolding mine),

For the moment I’d like to set aside the discussion of health care reform, as important and relevant as it is, and focus on one statement contained in your letter of October 29, 2009, in which you write, “The fact that I disagree with the hierarchy on some issues does not make me any less of a Catholic.” That sentence certainly caught my attention and deserves a public response, lest it go unchallenged and lead others to believe it’s true. And it raises an important question: What does it mean to be a Catholic?

What follows is a brilliant and concise catechesis into what exactly does it mean to call oneself “Catholic.” I recommend the entire letter.

But the point is that Bishop Tobin was instructing one who calls himself “Catholic,” and clearly intends to continue so to do, what that identification means. No one can force Kennedy to stop calling himself Catholic; nor can anyone force him to believe that which he chooses not to believe. But if the one does not square with the other, it is the Church’s responsibility, and particularly the bishop’s responsibility, to make sure one very public person’s obstinate dissent is not taken as a tacitly approved position for Catholics to maintain. Qui tacit consentire, the principle states, “silence gives consent.” Hence Bishop Tobin’s letter.

Since then, Kennedy, in an interview, made public that Tobin also instructed him not to receive Communion and is barred from receiving Communion in the diocese of Providence. A few significant points on this action.

First: Kennedy, not Tobin, made this public. Remember that when anyone says Tobin injected religion into politics. In fact, Tobin’s office made very little comment, only to deny that Tobin has discussed this matter with the pastors of the diocese, which casts serious doubt on Kennedy’s assertion that Tobin “barred him” from Communion in the diocese. It seems more likely that Tobin strictly instructed Kennedy personally not to present himself for Communion, especially while in the diocese of Providence. (Bishops have canonical authority only within the bounds of their own diocese. Archbishop Wuerl of Washington would be the one to officially bar Catholyc politicians from Communion in Washington, DC, while the home bishop retains spiritual fatherhood of the members of Congress who reside within their several dioceses.)

Second: What is the significance of this? The very name of the Sacrament in question suggests the significance: Communion. This Sacrament has so many levels that can be examined (e.g., the reception of the body and blood, soul and divinity of Christ has and does keep theologians mesmerized for a lifetime) but we’ll focus on Communion as the outward sign and inner reality of spiritual and actual unity. We receive the same one Lord who is One and has no division within Himself. Our unity as a body of believers of the same faith is to include undivided belief on those matters where unity is required. The Communion we share is a sign of our unity of belief and it draws us into the One Lord where all shall be one with Him. Before presenting himself for Communion, each and every believer is charged to examine his conscience and determine if he is guilty of any separation from the body of Christ through mortal sin or any schism–overt or covert. The believer who determines that he is not in fact in communion is then obliged, under pain of sacrilege, not to present himself for Communion. The obligation changes from person to person according to their spiritual formation and public status–public officials must consider not only their private standing, but the public scandal their actions may cause. With respect to public officials and sins of scandal, the bishop of the local Church can and must also consider the impact the public actions of Catholic public officials on the faithful at large. (The bishop’s first consideration must be the individual soul of the public official, but preventing scandal is a close second. The former is rightly reserved to private meetings and communications, the latter to public–a division we have seen Bishop Tobin respect in this matter.) If the bishop determines that the official’s actions can or will lead to scandal and confusion, he has authority–perhaps even the obligation–to bar the official from Communion until such time as the threat of scandal is passed through public acts of atonement and amendment of will. Such actions are for the sake of the individual public official’s immortal soul, and for the sake of the unity and purity of the Church.

What this is, then…

From the secular point of view, this is nothing more than a matter of a private institution governing itself; a leader of an institution instructing a “member” of that institution on the essential substance of being a member in good standing of the institution. The individual can decide whether he will remain a member in good standing, but he cannot set his own definition of what that means. Whether Kennedy remains a member in good standing of the Catholic Church is up to Kennedy. He can choose. Bishops Tobin has made clear the path Kennedy must walk, but he cannot walk it for Kennedy.

The Catholic Church is an institution that is intimately involved in this world because its Founder and Lord is intimately involved in this world. The Church seeks only to guide souls to heaven, and affect politics only inasmuch as her guidance leads her members to act and govern in accordance with God’s law of love and life. She does not force anyone to become or remain a member. She does not, as an institution, declare policies or governments legitimate or illegitimate. The realm her Lord commands is in this world as human hearts and souls are in this world, but she holds as secondary the politics of this world as she points to and leads her children to the life of her Lord in the world to come.

Note, if you will: Bishop Tobin did not tell Kennedy how to vote on any legislation. He did not inject religion into politics. He did not endorse the Stupak amendment, did not inveigh against the healthcare bill, did not mention a single piece of legislation. He instructed a wayward son on questions affecting eternity, morality, sanctity. As such, there is no violation of tax-exempt status.

And this is the great intersection of the secular and the Christian religious realms–the battleground of the human person. Secular governance is carried out by human actors. Each human actor chooses his actions on the basis of first principles of anthropology and morality and the political and economic philosophy that arises from those first principles. The Church has much to offer and instruct on morality and anthropology, which directly feeds governing philosophy. Her members who enter politics cannot ignore her teaching just because the prevailing opinion is that they ought to–that prevailing opinion is itself built upon a competing set of first principles, not upon a virtuous dispassionate ideal of “fairness,” or a gauzy notion of “separation of church and state.” Her members who embrace “personally opposed, but…” introduce division into themselves, and therefore into the Church. But since the Church abides no division on essentials, they set themselves against the Church. But in all actions here, the Church remains what she is while her recalcitrant members and unfortunate critics scurry about constructing worlds of nuance and exception around themselves–worlds ultimately doomed to destruction. Her critics, internal and external, will continue to criticize her according to their own hang-ups, angry that she refuses to bend with the winds they prefer.

One such hang-up is the charge that this is no different than the Islamists who seek to establish shari’a law in autonomous enclaves within the borders, or even to simply be a separate and unpatriotic people living within the borders ready to subvert the government–a charge Catholics faced for a good portion of this nation’s history. Only those with their own ax to grind and/or a profound ignorance would seriously make this charge. A moment’s reflection upon the nature of shari’a and the nature (as I’ve outlined in this commentary) of the Catholic understanding of the role of the Church vis-a-vis secular governance puts the lie to such a notion.

Even so, I expect a backlash to Bishop Tobin’s pastoral admonition. It won’t be the first nor the last anti-Church action, and it will be just as wrongly directed as the criticisms that led Augustine to pen City of God when the enemies of the Church blamed Christianity for the demise of the Roman empire. And it will also fail to strike at the heart of the Church’s influence and power, just as every previous attack from without or within has failed.

Voyageur: Carrying A Message

“Carry a message to Marathon, tell them we won.” Voyage to the moon so you can see the Earth behind you. Bring good news back, saying that all looks peaceful from there. Voyageur, carry the message in your heart, we have won the race. These are the words both sides of the vote on health care are looking for. One side will come away victorious today. Which it will be is anyone’s guess. If the Democrats get the vote, we will need to prepare for the onslaught coming in 2010. That onslaught will be the sound of locusts coming to take our freedom, our liberty, and our money. The locusts will be tax collectors, bureaucrats from Washington coming to set up panels which will tell us what they will cover and what they won’t, and the campaigners for candidates who will scrounge around for votes they don’t deserve. If the Republicans win we will see smiles, promises, kissed babies, and scroungers. Unless the Republican party regains their conservativeness, and their contract for America, and sticks with it, we will see a lot of wind but no breath of fresh air. Trust in our legislative branch will take place only if significant changes are wrought, there will be a distrust of congress and the bureaucracy which transports the messages from the legislature to the people. Unless the bureaucracy drastically changes, there will be very little change in the institution of government. Senators and Representatives may come and go, but bureaucrats stay until they are either fired or retired. If the voyageur caries a message of hope we can breathe easier for at least 10 minutes. Then we will need to continue our vigilence, because just like in 2001 and 2004, Republicans dropped the ball. The watchmen could not raise the citizens to rally at the gate then, so the message was lost. If we are not vigilent, when the Republicans regain their seats, they will slip again. There is an opportunity to become the uberparty again, but it will take work and boldness on the part of the candidates. The message must be transported to every portion of our society, from one people group to the next. Noone can be left out, and noone excluded. The conservative message is one of common sense answers to the issues of the day. Common sense is not always the simplest answer, but is an answer that simplifies complicated issues. This health care bill, for instance, complicates a simple issue into a convoluted mess. That is what republicans cannot do. Simplify, qualify, and reduce, the three words which will get the Republican Party back into a majotity. Then, when they get back into the majority, they cannot forget how they got there. Simplify, qualify, and reduce. Keep the message simple, just like the message the Greeks sent back to Marathon, ” we won.” Keep legislation simple so the citizenry can understand it, qualify the message by doing the math, showing how much it will cost in simple terms, reduce the size of government by half, cutting programs and departments that no longer serve a purpose, and reduce the deficit, and stop the spending. Stop the flow of illegals and secure the borders. In this way we can deduce that the Republican Party is one which listens to its constituents, and serves the nation rather than the party. It is just as wrong for Republicans to only serve the party as it is for the Democrats to only serve their party. If the Republican party serves the Nation first, they will reap the rewards of that action. The nation always comes first, politically.

The most important thing 2009 has taught us is that this nation can fall into darkness. We, as a nation have allowed our selves to idolize a man, and put him on such a high pedistal that when he falls he will break his neck. We have seen it in the newspapers, on cable news channels, network channels, and some radio stations. We have experienced this phenomenon throughout the campaign, and the first year of this presidency. No man, woman, or whatever, deserves that much adulation, no matter who they are. This nation has slipped into an idolitrous nation. We began this nation as an experiment in Christianity. Our forefathers came to this land to bring Christianity to this land for the glory of God. That was the beginning of this nation. Time has eaten away at this experiment in government and this Christian heritage. It is up to us to protect them both, with God’s help.

Red, White, Blue, and Green, With A Cresent

It seems that our President has given this nation into the hands of our enemies. He sees the enemy as a friend, and sees the citizens of America as his enemies. By giving Khalid Sheikh Mohammed all the rights and privileges afforded only to American citizens, he has abandoned his obligation to protect the constitution, therefore betraying this nation. In effect, Obama and Holder have taken it upon themselves to make Khalid, and friends, citizens of the United States without regard for the law. The Legislature is the branch of government which makes law regarding rules of naturalization, according to the constitution, and they are the only ones who can change those laws. Khalid and friends have no rights under the constitution, regardless of their imprisonment at Gitmo. This move on Holder’s part is unconscionable at best and unconstitutional all the way through. There is no reason Khalid and friends need to be brought to New York in the first place, unless it is to put the CIA, and the Bush administration on trial. If this is the case, both Obama and Holder are out of bounds. There is no excuse for revenge and slander in the case of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed vs. United States. If this trial turns into a circus, both Obama and Holder need to be held accountable for their actions.

We have seen our flag, and our nation come under the worst attack since the World Trade Center in 2001. President Obama and Eric Holder are the culprits, and the families of those slain in 2001 are the targets of their attack. How can Obama and Holder perpetrate the devastatingly brutal propaganda tour to proceed. Do they hate the victims that much, or are they just stupid, according to Proverbs 12:1-3.  1. “Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid. 2. A good man obtains favor from the Lord, but the LORD condemns a crafty man. 3. A man cannot be established through wickedness, but the righteous cannot be uprooted.” It seems this may be something to think about while Khalid and friends make their way to New York. This war is not against criminals, it is against people who have declared war on this nation, and to treat it as a criminal act is not only against the military code, but it is an Ostrich move on the part of our president and his attorney general. It is time to wake up, Mr. President, and smell the gunpowder, because if this trial is allowed to proceed we will see many more attacks on our soil, and the blame will fall on your shoulders. There is no excuse for stupidity, or for having your head in the sand.

Face the facts, President Obama, and Attorney General Holder, we are at war, and because of that fact all diligence should be brought to bear on this case, in the military courts. No war criminal should be tried in civilian court. It is wrong, and it sets the wrong message before the world. Wake up, Mr. President!!!

Under Obama’s Flag

What is a flag? It is a banner under which armies march, going forth into battle against the enemy. Our senators and representatives are marching under his flag, and the enemy is the citizenry of the United States. Not every senator or representative is marching under his flag, but enough of them are, and are poised to destroy this nation. Obama’s flag looks very much like that of the United Nations flag, only worse. His flag is the color of blood, with white and green stripes, and a dragon on its seal. The blood is the killing of our liberty and freedom, the white is the tears flowing because we are the slaves of our own government, and the green is the color of the environmental movement taking their vengeance on everyone who disagrees with them. The whole flag is the flag of the world government that has taken over our nation because President Obama signed over our sovereignty to a world government which has the power to punish this once great land if we don’t pay reparation to every other country because we use too many resources to run our economy. We are taxed at 2% of our GDP and we will soon be the third world country we are supposed to repay. President Obama has forfeited our sovereignty so he can be a king in the world system. Unfortunately, kingships in the system are short-lived. This nation will survive only if the citizens stand up now, and be counted. If President Obama succeeds in turning this nation into his dream, it will become our nightmare. He and those who surround him have a dream, which they see as the Ultimate State. It envolves taking over every aspect of our lives. Healthcare is not about helping the poor American get a doctor, or a hospital, it is about who will control the healthcare system in America. Cap and Trade is not about energy independence, it is about who will control our power grids, and the diversity of our radio, and television, is not about our right to hear and see what we desire, but to shut down those who oppose him and his policies. It is all about who has the power, and if Obama and those surrounding him have things their way, they will hold it all. Those who are trying to pass these bills are those who desire to control our lives. They envision a world where they have ultimate authority over everything just like the pigs in the book, Animal Farm, by George Orwell. He knew something about Socialism, and Fascism, having grown up under Stalin. If we, the United States, fall into the hands of tyrants, we will see bitter days ahead. Once that happens only God will be able to help us, and He will, if we ask. He is the only one who loves us enough to help us in times of trouble. He will be the only one left to turn to, and He will be waiting for us with arms open wide.

Obama’s flag is dripping with the blood of patriots, and if we want to remain free, and enjoy our God-given rights, we will have to continue to continue our fight for freedom and liberty with diligence and vigilence. So let us continue to continue our battle for the soul of America. It is the only way we will win the battle. Victory is within our grasp, but people will have to step up, become the voice of freedom, and run the race which leads to a place in history. Run against those who desire to destroy our nation, become the representative of the people, with a listening ear, and a humble heart, a servant of the people, for the people, voted in by the people, and from the people. Be the voice of the people, not the voice against the people. Those who take office after this next election are the heart of the people who elect them, and if that heart is broken, watch out.

Things Our Founding Fathers Wouldn’t Do

It seems to be a terrible thing to teach our children, in school, or at home, what the founding fathers would or would not do. George washington and Thomas Jefferson used the treasury to place chaplains in the army. That is something schools won’t be teaching. Thomas Jefferson used treasury money to send missionaries to the Indian tribes. You won’t hear that in schools either. George Washington had army chaplains as early as 1777. He felt they were a great asset to keeping the military in a peacable state. Thomas Jefferson was a big proponent of chaplains in the military and missionaries to the Indians. THINGS THOMAS JEFFERSON DID AS PRESIDENT Among other things Thomas Jefferson included, among other things, supporting government
involvement in: Legislative AND Military Chaplains====Establishing a national seal using a religious symbol. Including the word “God” in our national motto=====Official days of Fasting and Prayer–at least on the state level=====Punishing Sabbath breakers (is that real enough to convince you he was not an atheist?)=====Punishing marriages contrary to biblical law====Punishing irreverent soldiers Protecting the property of churches====Requiring oaths saying “So Help Me God,” taken on the Bible Granting land to Christian churches to reach the Indians ====Granting land to Christian Schools Allowing Government property and facilities to be used for worship. Using the Bible and non-denominational religious instruction in the public schools. (He was involved  in three different school districts and the plan in each one of these
REQUIRED that the Bible be taught in our public schools.)====Allowing clergymen to hold public office,
and encouraging them to do so. Purchasing and stocking religious books for public libraries.=====Funding of salaries of clergymen in Indian Mission schools====Funding for construction of church buildings for Indians. Exempting churches from taxation====Establishing professional schools
of theology. (He wanted to bring over from Geneva, Switzerland, the entire faculty of Calvin’
theological and establish it at the University of Virginia.)====Treaties requiring other nations to
guarantee religious freedom. Including religious speeches and prayers in official ceremonies.
Its to bad he isn’t around to help the ACLU isn’t it. The whole question of seperation of Church and State has been a myth since it was first introduced in 1954. The point Thomas Jefferson was trying to bring forth in his letter to the Danbury Baptists was that the State would not interfere with there religious practices, or have a State religion like the European nations did. The point was not to seperate the State from religion. The first amendment backs him up by saying the government shall not pass repecting the establishment of religion, nor prohibiting the free exercise thereof. We have become a nation of seperators rather than includers. If we are convinced that this statement, even though false, is the law of the land, what else can we be convinced of. History, if truthfully told, reveals a totally different story than what is being taught in school. We, as Americans, have lost so much of our history through revisionist historicism, and we are ignorant of the truth. Our founding fathers would not tolerate any ignorance of history, or the Bible, or any other classic work. We have developed a whole class of people who have no knowledge of anything beyond their eyeballs. They know what they can see, and some not even that. There is no understanding of who we are as a nation. If we lose a whole generation, who will teach the children who we are and whose we are. How will they know the greatness of this nation, when they don’t even know how this nation’s government works, or how they can avoid the same problems other generations have had to overcome. We are in a financial crisis now because those in authority do not understand that what they are trying to do didn’t work before. Our founding fathers would not forfeit freedom for convenience or allow someone to monopolize power, because they had just fought a war to extricate this nation from under the thumb of a tyrant. They purposely set the government up to protect this nation from such a thing ever happening. However that preservation was predicated on the high education levels of the next generation, and the continued religious activity of its citizens. A strong Christian heritage was of utmost importance to the founding fathers, because they knew that if the level of religious ferver left this nation it would fall for the first person who would promise them everything free. So, now where does that place us today? This nation has fallen for someone who promised it everything for nothing, but will cost us everything, including our freedom.

There is no doubt that we are headed for disaster unless the madness is turned around. If we allow our government to destroy itself, we will be in the same boat as George Washington was when he crossed the Deleware River, frozen and sick with no possiblity of victory without Divine intervention. He prayed, before that journey, that God would bless the campaign with victory. Does it seem strange that a General of the Army would pray such a prayer, especially in 1777? If that same predicament were to happen now I’m not so sure it would occur. We have given God second or even third place in our lives. We tend to try everything else first before we even think of prayer. Our founding fathers would not allow governmental interference in private affairs, and business. They would expect you to pay taxes however. Big business was not an issue, but private business, such as farming, printing, markets, and banks were privately owned and privately run, without much intrusion by government, except to pay taxes, of course. We have a government which routinely interferes with private businesses, interferes in private lives through nanny state laws, and imposes regulations on everything from a to z. Now the government wants to control the whole media industry from the newspapers to the internet. Through the FCC President Obama and his cronies want to control our freedom of speech by regulating our media outlets. If they don’t like what is being said about them, or if we disagree with them they want the power to shut us down. Our freedom of speech, and the press are rights endowed by our Creator, and this government does not have the authority to shut anything down, or punish someone just because they don’t capitulate to their will. That is tyranny, and is unconstitutional, and even treasonous.

We are required to be watchmen on the wall, searching for enemies without and enemies within. We must be diligent and without bias. We are not out to get those who simply oppose us, we are looking for those who would destroy us. We must raise the trumpet and sound the alarm when danger tyranny raises its ugly head. We cannot abandon the Constitution and the Bill of Rights that our founding fathers, in their wisdom, wrote down for our safety. If we fail we risk enslavement to a subversive system of radical idealogues, attempting to impose a system of government that leads to the death of our democratic federal republic, and our constitution. Time is of the essence and our resolve is needed. Don’t give up without a fight.

Dear Mr. President

Why are you so hell-bent on destroying America? We, the people you say you love, want an America where we are free to live, love, and work without government interference. We want our government to help us by remaining small, defending our borders, and defending our nation. We do not want our government running every aspect of our lives. Why are you trying to ruin our economy, and ruin the best healthcare system in the world? We, the people, don’t want government taking control of our future chances for economic freedom. We also don’t want government telling us how much money we can make, or pushing our energy bills, and taxes into the stratosphere. We don’t need protection from climate, nor do we need government interference in our carbon footprints. You are becoming more of a problem than a solution, because you think big government is the answer to everything. It is not the answer, it is the problem. Government has no place in anything other than defending our borders, which you are not doing, defending our nation against outside enemies, and creating a safe America through the justice department. The role of government at the federal level was the last, and least form of government in the Constitution because the people come first, then the local governments, the state, then lastly the federal government. The reason for that was so that tyrants could not inflict power over the citizenry. You, however, have chosen to ignore the very Constitution you took an oath to uphold, and destroy everything our founding fathers held dear. I would suggest you read and study the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, then read George Washington’s 1796 farewell address. You might just learn something. You, being a constitutional lawyer should be ashamed of your self for trying to destroy the very document that made America great.

Why are you trying to destroy us, as a nation, by signing a treaty that would effectively renounce our sovereignty, placing u under the control of the United Nations, the European Union, and every other country in the world who hates us? Are you crazy or what? We, the people of the United States do not want our nation’s sovereignty abolished. We are a sovereign nation and we want to remain a sovereign nation. If you want to live in the rest of the world so be it, but don’t destroy America in the process. If you hate America so much, go live somewhere else. We, the people, are the ones who get to decide whether we want America to be the land of the free and the home of the brave. You and your cohorts in congress, and your socialist advisors can go live in some other country, if you don’t like ours. We, the people are sick and tired of you and your cohorts trying to destroy our nation, our constitution, and our healthcare system. We, the people are sick and tired of you and your cohorts spending our children’s and grandchildren’s money to destroy this nation’s economy. We, the people, are sick and tired you and your cohorts, claiming to be protecting our environment so you can usurp more power for yourselves and your cronies. Mr. President, how dare you attempt to transform this wonderful democratic federal republic into a socialist state. We, the people don’t want any part of your socialist state, and we don’t want you graft, your collusion, or your Chicago style, corrupt form of government.
We, the people, demand our rights, which were endowed by our Creator to be protected. We, the people, want freedom of reilgion, not freedom from religion, freedom of speech, not freedom from speech, freedom to bear arms, not freedom from bearing arms, freedom of the press, not government run press, freedom of redress of grievances, not being brutalized by the government if we don’t agree with your policies. This government did not give us those rights and freedoms, and you, as the government do not have the right to take them away. Your attempt to control the press, and to punish those who disagree with you is totally against the constitution, and therefore treasonous. You are attempting to centralize and control every aspect of the broadcast and newspaper industry, and that flies in the face of the rights and freedoms we, the people, have enjoyed for over 200 years. You have no right to take that right away. You have no right to transform this great nation into a dictatorship. We, the people will not stand by and see our nation destroyed by you and your cohorts. There is no excuse for you to turn this great nation into a bananna republic. We, the people are awake now, and we are watching your every move. We have watchmen on the wall, searching the horizon, watching for the enemy, even the enemy close to home. We, the people, are not willing to see our nation destroyed from inside our borders. We, the people, will win the fight, because there are more of us than there are of you.

                                                                           Signed,

WE, THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES

Restoration and Reformation of Poetic License

Why am I trying to restore and reform a simple thing like poetic license when there is so much trouble in this nation? Poetic license is an outgrowth of freedom of speech. In order to have poetic license there must be a possibliity of speaking or writing without the thought police and the fear traders grabbing the limelight by denouncing the poet as an evil troublemaker, or worse, an enemy of the State. The first amendment grants every individual the right of free speech. No doubt some speech is offensive to some, or even many, but is that speech, however obnoxious, forbidden by the first amendment? Common decency is the key to stopping the flow of obnoxious and offensive language, and that can only be taught by parents, at home. A little soap in the mouth of a two year old does wonders. No child has to speak obnoxiously, and no adult needs to speak that way either. It just isn’t necessary. If a person doesn’t have any more vocabulary that obnoxious, or indecent words to say then they probably don’t need to say anything at all until they can find something important to say. It also make that person look smarter too, even if they aren’t. Common decency has nothing to do with freedom of speech, because the speech is voluntarily stopped. The problem comes when the government, in a fit of Victorianism decides to take away our rights. Now the issue changes from common decency to violation of rights. Poetic license is thrown out the door because someone desires to squelch everyone’s rights to stop one person from offending someone who cries wolf, like the boy who cried wolf, even though no wolf was present, finally no one came and the wolf ate him. When the government becomes the arbiter of our rights, we are in a position of slavery, because when the government decides what rights and priviledges we have, rather than protecting the rights we naturally have, we are brought into subservience to the State, rather than being free, and enjoying the liberties guaranteed by our Creator. If government becomes the arbiter of our rights, they also have the authority to take them away. However, our Constitution concretely states that our rights are God given, not government given.

Poetic license is a major factor in our society because we like to tell stories and entertain our neighbors and friends with tales if daring do. That is where we began as a people. We told stories to pass along our history and teach our children who they are. We still tell our stories about our family history and put there lives in a historical context. We also use storytelling to relate our religious views and the spiritual makeup of our family to the next generation. Life cannot be imparted to the next generation unless we tell them about the past, and their part in the history of that past. However, it is very important to include all of history and not the revised history our children are taught in school. Lying about our past, as a nation, is wrong, and so indecent as to be compared to robbing our children of a very expensive treasure. Our past history is the basis of our democracy and the robbery of that treasure is not only insulting to all of us, but it is a treasonous act on the part of those who write the history books for the school systems in America. History, good or bad is important to learn, and trying to change history because you don’t like aspects of it is an act so vial as to be an act of treason. There is a difference between poetic license and stealing a person’s historical past to further an agenda of cleansing the past of anything you don’t agree with, or to cover up our nation’s Christian heritage. That is a case of denying a person the truth for a cause, such as freedom from religion, rather than freedom of religion, as stated in the Constitution. We must be diligent and protect our rights. If the government is able to take away one right, they will be able then to take all of them away. We have nearly lost our freedom of religion because no one deems it an important right, but if it goes, what will be next? The restoration of poetic license is an important project. It is one project we can’t afford to allow to fail. The dominoes are lined up and one flick of the finger may just begin the toppling of the rights we hold dear. We simply can’t allow our government to topple those dominoes, because if we do we will be the ones who suffer most. We are strong and we are the ones who hold the key to power at the moment. Let us not become weary, because the alternative is not a good one. We can do this!!

Restoration and Reformation of Life

While the health care debate is raging we are in the midst of a crisis which does not get much press. Each and every day thousands of innocent lives are lost through abortion. I know, this is a hot topic, but one that needs to be addressed, because the health care bill in the House of Representatives includes tax payments for abortion on demand without any restrictions. The bill kills any parental control or permission before a young woman in their teens can have an abortion. Even the worst procedures are allowed, including partial birth abortion. Taxpayers, whether they agree with abortion or not will have to support it through their taxes. Abortion was wrong in 1973 and it is still wrong. It is wrong because there are no consequences for bad behavior. When all you have to do is go into a clinic and remove the problem, the solution seems simple. The consequences, however, don’t go away with the baby. The obvious ones do, but the damage to the young woman are present none-the-less. Those damages are only seen through the eye of the soul. When a baby is aborted, a part of the mother is also cut into. The psychological damage, and in some cases physical damage prevent the mother from living a life free from the guilt of her action. Abortion and pregnancy become a reoccurring pattern, which abortion clinics thrive on. Normal relationships are harder to come by, because love is seen as a physical act rather than a lifelong committment. reoccurring abortions decimate the uterus, and eventually destroys any chance of having a baby.

Margeret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, spoke often about the fact that if you start a woman soon enough, she will become a regular customer. She also continually spoke of the need to annialate those deemed to be inferior. That was the guiding light that Hitler, and Stalin went by in their respective nations, and we know what happened to millions of people under their rule. In America there have been nearly 50,000,000 abortions performed. Most of those have come at the expense of minorities, Planned Parenthood’s favorite target. It always intrigued me why minorities always support Planned Parenthood when they were the main target, because Planned Parenthood has always stated in their writings, beginning with Margaret Sanger that minorities, immigrants, and the poor, should be eliminated because they were obviously inferior.

This process is called Eugenics. It consists of forming a higher race, or master race, as Hitler called it, through selection of the smartest, healthiest, and strongest within the population and replicating them. As a health care plan, this works really great. That is why the ultra liberals want rationing of health care. They want to give the best care to those who will make society a strong, healthy, smart, higher race of ultraliberals. Therefore, those who are infirmed, old, chronically ill, imperfect in any way, are rationed. When those are gone the next group becomes vulnerable, until the only ones left are those who believe themselves to be perfect. It will be a tragedy when the last one is left alone, and he will have to kill himself because he finds out he’s not perfect.

What about restoration? Do we have a chance? Restoration after an abortion is indeed possible. Even multiple abortions don’t stop the possibility of restoration. Reformation is achievable even for the “worst” of us. The hardest part of restoration and reformation is admitting that we have made the wrong choice, allowing someone, or ourself to have an abortion. Never forget, Jesus died so that we could be reconciled to the Father in heaven. Sin is not the end of everything, if we decide to change the direction we are travelling, turn around and come, allowing Jesus to hold us in His arms and say your sins are forgiven. He longs to hold us in His arms like a little girl holds her doll, caressing and loving it with every fiber of her being. Jesus loved us so much He allowed Himself to be nailed to a cross, suffer, die, and be buried. He then rose from the dead to seal the deal. He forgave us while He was on that cross, and seeks to reconcile each and every one of us to our Father in heaven. No one has sinned too much to not be forgiven. All it takes to gain forgiveness is to say; Jesus if you are real, change me, and show me who you are. Live in me, and make me whole. Thank You. That is all it takes. He’s ready and waiting.

Restoration and Reformation In the Eye of the Storm

The eye of the storm is calm and almost eerily peaceful. However, it is only temporary. While that eye is still above us, we have a chance to escape its grasp. Once the eye is past we are in the midst of the storm again. The same is true of a nation. While the eye is above us, we can we can see clearly what lies before us. Once the storm hits again we will be blinded by the fury of the storm. The decision making time is during the time when the eye is open.  America has been making decisions in the midst of a perpetual storm for over one year. We have seen storms come and have not waitwed until the eye of the storm arrives. Decisions have been made while chaos runs rampent and we are seeing the results in the legislation that has come out of congress. Of course, it might have been different if congress had actually written the legislation. When even the writing of the legislation is outsourced to some fringe group, one never knows what kind of bill will come forth. That kind of irresponsible action only adds to the power of the storm, and brings about the destruction of our Republic. The storm we face in America is one which can only be called a man made firestorm, or a man made contingency. The assault on America from within has created a storm of Biblical proportions. It could swamp our nation into the Sea of Chaos unless restoration and reformation are brought forth, saving America from the oblivion she faces.

Our whole system of government is on the brink of collapse due to the cunning and treachery of a few Czars, and a President bent on the reallignment of our stars and bars into a hammer and sickle with stars around it in a semicircle like China. Our president and his cronies have nearly bancrupted our nation, and brought us into a position of having a puppet government of China, and the European Union. Our nation has been sold down the river for thirty pieces of silver. If nothing is done to change our direction we as a nation will become just one of many countries within the structure of a one world government. Our Bill of Rights will be deleted, and our Constitution will be torn asunder, replaced by the United Nations charter. We will be ruled by a Junta style government, which means we will be subject to the rule of a small panel of Chaves’s. We will have no say in the government because it will not be a democratic form of government. The two classes of people will be the masters and the serf.

This may seem to be hyperbole, but whenever a group of people attempt to sierze a nation, three things happen. First they get major access to the media, then they take over the banking and business, and then they change the laws to take over any other institution, such as healthcare, or they create an atmosphere of fear, wherein everyone allows the government to take over because of a created crisis. The last thing is to have an enemy to focus everyones attention on. Some group is made out to be the cause of all the evil in the nation. In Germany it was the Jews, In Russia it was a combination of the Jews and the evil west, and here it seems to be those evil capitalists.

It will depend upon the strength of our character, and the wisdom which comes from God to overcome the dark times that are coming. Those whose faith in God is strong will survive even the worst chaotic times, because God will never leave His children as orphans. He will never leave us or forsake us, and no child of God will ever go begging for bread. It is His resposibility to take care of us. That doesn’t mean we don’t have go do anything, but He is always there for us.

The eye of the storm is a good place to ask ourselves where we are going, and how we will get there. Jesus died so we could come to Him and be reconciled to the Father. That determines where we could be going. The next question is answered by yielding our heart and trusting Jesus with our life. His burden is light and His yoke is easy, and He is a great teacher. As we learn to trust Him we find out just how committed to us He really is. He died for us while we were still enemies of God. He forgave us while we still hated Him. He took our sickness, sin, agonies upon Himself, and when He rose again the power of sin and death were broken for all time. God is not surprised by what is taking place in our world, He prophesied that all this would happen over 2000 years ago. Now you are probably wondering why so much evil is in the world and why God doesn’t fix it. First of all God created man and gave this world to Him to tend and to guard. The Evil One tempted man and he gave up his kingship, giving it to Satan. Since that time, Satan has been the ruler of this world. Since God gave man a free will, we can choose whether we serve God or Satan. God loves us no matter what decision we make, however just like every other decision we make, consequences happen. When Adam and Eve sinned, death reigned, but God promised to send a Savior, and Jesus was that Savior. When Jesus died and rose again, He broke the power of sin and death, giving those who trust in Him eternal life with Him. That is how God fixed the problem, and we are able to be part of God’s Kingdom because of Jesus. While the eye of the storm is over us we need to decide what we want to do. When the storm hits it may be too late. Now is the time to consider well what our future holds. The storm is approaching, time is short, ask God to show Himself to you, and He will.

You’re David Brooks and You’re Jealous…..

….[or High School Musical 4: The Beltway]

I’m sure that many of you have read David Brooks’ recent column in The New York Times (or should I say tirade), where he rants on and on about the evils of Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly. However, what Mr. Brooks also did in his column—either intentionally or unintentionally—was to display intense disdain for the listeners and viewers of the above entertainers and pundits when he wrote that those entertainers expressed themselves using “spittle-flecked furor” and that they “represent a mere niche of the Republican Party”. Robert Stacy McCain wrote an excellent blog about Mr. Brooks’ obvious disdain for conservatives titled, “David Brooks Hates You” that is a must read. But, I feel that David Brooks displayed another emotion in his dreadful column besides just hatred, and if you will bear with me, I would like to translate Mr. Brooks’ column by reading between the lines and deciphering what he really means.—

“For the life of me, I can not understand why all of those bitter, xenophobic, Bible-thumping clingers love O’Reilly, Limbaugh, Beck and Hannity so much—particularly Limbaugh and Beck. I mean, why do hayseeds love those two chubby, former addicts more than me?! Don’t they all know that I am the favorite “conservative” of the liberal elites? Sure, O’Reilly , Limbaugh, Hannity and Beck might all have sky-high ratings and millions of listeners/viewers (and Beck has unheard of ratings for an afternoon slot), but I write for The New York Freaking Times!! And, I’m frequently on Meet the Press and PBS (shows so prestigious that they do not need actual viewers)—and people who listen to NPR love me (they can listen to me and get a free tote bag). That’s got to mean something. You see, I’ve got the much more sophisticated audience, so the Republican base should really appreciate me and listen to me more, instead of paying so much attention to what bloviators like Limbaugh and Beck have to say. But hey, all of us over at The Times realize that the Republican party is “no party of Einsteins”, so they really don’t know what’s best for them, do they? Oh well, you know what “they” say—a prophet is least appreciated in his own land.

Now, about Glenn Beck—God I hate that chubby, weeping Mormon, and all of his stupid viewers. Beck thinks that he’s so cool just because he was able to expose corruption in the NEA and ACORN, force Van Jones to resign, and inspire hundreds of thousands people to descend on DC in order to protest the Obama Administration’s big government programs. But so what? That’s nothing really. Don’t these bitter clingers who watch Beck know that I wrote “Bobos in Paradise”? Sure, nobody really read it, but all of the elite intelligentsia bought it to put on their bookshelves so that people who attend their cocktail parties would think that they were smart and well-read.

Furthermore, I am famous for my pearls of wisdom, such as saying that Sarah Palin isn’t ready to run for vice president because “experience matters” and calling her a “fatal cancer on the GOP” simply because she doesn’t think like me (see embed below). Now granted, Senator Obama had less real experience when he ran for president than Sarah Palin had when she ran for vice president. However, that’s really neither here nor there, because Barack Obama is much more like ME and runs in MY circles, whereas Sarah Palin does not—and that’s what those hayseeds who watch Beck, instead of listening to me, don’t understand. I mean, don’t they know who I think I am?

Also, I wasn’t a big fan of how Hannity, O’Reilly, and particularly Beck, yammered on and on about Van Jones until he resigned. (By the way, you all know that I really do have enough influence to get someone to resign if I wanted them to, right?) OK—so Van Jones may be a nutty 9/11 truther and a self-avowed communist, but he’s a friend of my colleague, Thomas Friedman. And besides, Van Jones is a lot like me in that we are both Ivy League educated elites. Furthermore, Jones also wrote a book that no one really read, but that elites like to display on their book shelves in order to create the impression being well-read. You know, come to think of it, maybe Thomas Friedman was on to something when he floated his idea of the US having a one party autocracy similar to that of China. I mean, it would be nice if me, Thomas Friedman and Van Jones ran things, because we know so much more than the troglodytes in the Republican base who listen to Limbaugh, Beck, O’Reilly and Hannity, but I digress.

And finally, I am no fan of the way O’Reilly, Limbaugh, Hannity and Beck relentlessly attack Barack Obama, because I have a serious man-crush on him. We have exchanged emails and I was extremely impressed by him. Unlike the Republican base who likes Beck, Limbaugh, O’Reilly and Hannity better than me, Barack Obama understands me and respects me. He can even read my mind.

Maybe President Obama will invite me to go with him to the next big White House gala. That would be awesome! We could talk all night about me, and then HIM, and then me again. (I just hope Obama doesn’t ask Chris Matthews to go with him instead of me. I know—next time President Obama calls me, I can three-way call Chris Matthews and I can trick him into saying something bad about Obama, but I digress.) Then, all of those bitter hicks in the Republican base can see how cool I really am, and then they will be sorry that they never listen to me.

—Translation: You’re David Brooks and you’re jealous.
