The battle we have all been waiting for is finally upon us. The question now is: how will it all play out?

I engage in some shameless speculation below the fold:

For today and today only, being a Detroit Lions fan is a bannable offense.

Update [2005-10-30 10:1:3 by Erick]: Go LIONS!!!!!. Let's see Leon ban me ;)

UPDATE [2005-10-30 11:24:00 by Leon H]: As Erick well knows, not all "bannable offenses" are instantly punished with banning. We take into account posting history, whether they are a director or not, and also whether they could name a single Detroit Lions player or not. I think he's safe for now.

UPDATE [2005-10-30 11:24:00 by Pejman]: My beloved Bears just beat the Lions in overtime. I ask that we not ban Lions fans, but just taunt them mercilessly instead.

This indictment is not about the war. This indictment's not about the propriety of the war. And people who believe fervently in the war effort, people who oppose it, people who have mixed feelings about it should not look to this indictment for any resolution of how they feel or any vindication of how they feel.

* * *

And I think anyone's who's concerned about the war and has feelings for or against shouldn't look to this criminal process for any answers or resolution of that.

-Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald
Speaking at a News Conferece Today

Well, now that we've had most of the day to let these indictments sink in, let's consider just what they mean, shall we?

Posted at 3:10pm on Oct. 26, 2005 The Last Line of Defense

By Leon H Wolf

Much hay is (rightly) being made today about this speech that Harriet Miers gave to the Executive Women of Dallas (EWD) in 1993. The transcript of this speech pounds another nail in the coffin of the hopes that Harriet Miers resembles Scalia or Thomas in the slightest - and gives further credence to the concern that Miers may actually be to the left of Sandra Day O'Connor.

With each passing day, we are asked to discard more and more evidence that this woman is not a conservative, and that the President has violated one of his most important campaign promises. Right now, the only credible defense of Miers that remains is the one being advanced by Paul Mirgenoff and John Hinderaker: that the President has historically had the prerogative to nominate whoever he wants, absent egregious corruption or ethical problems.

To this extent Mirgenoff and Hinderaker are correct. But just as the President has the prerogative to nominate whoever he wants, his constituency likewise has the right to express its displeasure with the President's choice, and to exert pressure on the President to reconsider his choice, or on Senators to reject the President's choice.

Material from the speech and a timeline below the fold:

It's been a few days since we've had some open thread, so enjoy.

Since apparently discussions of fundraising will turn to discussions about Harriet Miers in two comments or less these days, I offer you this as a starting point.

Posted at 2:54am on Oct. 24, 2005 Fisking the Klick Study

By Leon H Wolf

A few days ago Ramesh Ponnuru (who happens to be one of my very favorite writers/thinkers) linked to this study by Jonathan Klick and Thomas Stratman, which purported to show that parental consent laws reduce the incidence of risky sex in teenagers.

Now, you all know where I stand on this issue: I can't imagine the insanity of a jurisdiction that would mandate parental consent for collagen implants, but not for abortions. And, as much as I'd love to discover that parental consent laws are efficacious against risky sex in addition to being eminently sensible, I don't think this particular study takes us very far down that road.

A brief methodology analysis of the Klick/Stratmann study exists below the fold:

By Leon H Wolf

"Plainly, the court today rejects any claim that the Constitution requires abortion on demand."

-Chief Justice Warren Burger
January 22, 1973

Really, I don't know that more needs to be said in defense of the title of this piece. However, because the point is so important, and has been so dismissed and pooh-poohed by the various defenders of Miers over the last several days, I think that perhaps some further analysis is in order. Bottom line: George Will is correct as usual.

There's good news and bad news to be had for the GOP in terms of national election news today. Normally, you'd get this stuff from Adam C, but his school is trying to kill him, too, so you get me instead.
