Congrats to Internet Super Sleuth Arianna Huffington for sniffing out the creator of the (now) infamous Obama/Hillary/1984 video that more than a million people have downloaded and watched on YouTube.

Turns out - the creative mind in question is former Deaniac and former Sherrod Brown internet campaign hack Phillip de Vellis. Now Mr. de Vellis can add another "former" to his resume: former staffer at Blue State Digital, a leftie web consulting shop.

Here's where it gets tricky: BlueState has deep, deep ties to Obama's campaign. They have a formal vendor relationship, one of the founders of the firm has left to serve on the campaign. But, as the company puts it, "Mr. de Vellis created this video on his own time. It was done without the knowledge of management, and was in no way tied to his work at the firm or our formal engagement [on technology pursuits] with the Obama campaign."

So there you have it - and off you go, Mr. de Vellis. I give him about an hour till he finds a new job - and good for him, the video was great.

And at the end of the day, lest the "reformers" of the world screech about anonymous hit pieces, shady internet operatives and add calls for regulations in the name of accountability: here's a newsflash. The system worked just damned fine. Someone ran a creative, entertaining hit piece of sorts. Lots of people watched it. People started snooping - and the provenance of the video was established. End of story. BlueState gets to pay a little price, Obama's campaign pays a little (folks will simply not swallow the notion that no one knew anything, in spite of their earlier denials) as well.

And the world keeps turning. Remember, in politics, especially online: more speech = good thing. Period. The alternative - restrictions or regulations...it would be ironic, don't you think - that a video using Ridley Scott's commercial to parody a candidate could be used as justification for making the underlying fantasy a terrible reality.

For not giving the idea to the firm to make a real ad from.

And then hired him back at a better-paying position...

There are those who look on Dresden and Tokyo and Hiroshima as some of the greatest evils ever perpetrated by man. I look on them and thank the perpetrators for saving millions.

Certain fake TANG documents faxed from an Abilene, Texas Kinko's come to mind. Don't recall Rather answering any calls for accountability.

It is delightfully sticky for Hillary. She can't claim "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy." She can't really accuse Obama of the "politics of personal destruction" because Obama can at least deny any knowledge of it. She has no one on which to wreak revenge except a guy who already lost his job.

Dean campaign? Dean was talking about running so taking out Mrs. Bill Clinton was just the place to start.

He's gotta profound point in the last sentence.

Also, someone please tell me how to html short links on this site, I keep screwing it up so I have to cut and paste, and I'm sure it's annoying people.

concise, stand on the controversial issues that Obama took rather than the mushy, vague, collectivist exhortations of Clinton.

Seriously, how does one democrat tell the difference from another. What with assembly line fluff like "getting the nation moving again" do you go with hair styles, the knot of the tie, trimmed fingernails, what?

Obama, Clinton, Dean, Edwards, on policy you couldn't slip a postage stamp between them. You might just close your eyes and pick a name from a hat but then you wouldn't be bright and discerning and an activist, the accolade of contemporary culture.

i don't know why this guy had to resign or why the obama camp is running away from the ad. it's a great video and a very creative take off on the old apple ad. it's very popular not just because of it's creativity, but because it's true. it's painful to listen to hillary, not because i disagree with her on all of the issues, but because all she does is spew out uninspiring platitudes. it's insufferable. nobody reels off more platitudes than the dems, but at least obama sounds more inspiring. can you imagine hillary winning and having to listen to her "conversations" for four years. i'd rather commit hari-kari. as the only reliable newspaper "The Onion" says "Let the conversation end."

I think the ad was spot-on re Hillary's views of both government and the electorate.
