Al Gore Likens Himself to 300 Spartans

In his testimoney before the House Energy Committee this morning, former Vice President Al Gore likened environmentalists to the Spartan heros of the recent movie '300.'
He said, "One of the most popular movies is '300'....there are times, rare though, when a relatively small group is called upon to make decisions and show courage because the results of what they do will shape the prospect not only for themselves and their kin but all future generations. This Congress is now the 535."
As a side note, I have a review of 300 here on HE today.

Retreat to a safe place where you control the setting and the information, and have nothing but echoes of assent and agreement backing you up - then (and only then) claim to be a heroic, brave voice in the wilderness, standing up to the machine and speaking truth to power. Oh, and then compare yourself to real heroes, as well.

Jeff, this is priceless and I think the perfect summary of political blogging today.
Amazing movie - I enjoyed it more than any I have seen in a long time, but I'm not sure I would call the Spartans freedom loving (from your review). Fiercely independent, sure.
Theron seemed to be a good representation. The man is claiming to champion the environment while he has a strip mine. A Gore presidency certainly would have been an unpleasant, unenjoyable sexual act.

which EVERYONE claims to champion their view of political reality. The NYTimes called it a sly commentary on the Bush WH.

Yep, you gotta love it.
And Conservatives love a film made in Montreal, CANADA.?
Are you implying that conservatives should only like movies made in the US? Or that conservatives should dislike movies made in Canada? The NYT is going to say a movie criticizes Bush if it criticizes anyone. Having not seen the movie myself, I cannot definitavely say what politics it might endorse, but based on reviews I have read, it seems that it at least shows the results of traitorous actions. Things like giving aid and comfort to the enemy - a la dems in congress.

You could hardly come up with a better parody of him - and his self-absorbed and pompous self-righteousness.
Some two millenia ago, Plutarch observed (in his famous "Parallel Lives" biographical sketches) that the character of a "great man" was revealed less in his "great actions" than in many small and seemingly minor incidents.
This is one of those moments. It calls to mind Sen. Clinton's recent assertion, trying to make a case that she has suffered too, that Sen. McCain's treatment during his horrific seven years as a POW in North Vietnam had an equivalent in her life - that she suffered horribly too.... when her 1993 health care plan came under severe criticism.
It's the same thing with Mr. Gore. The defenders of Thermopylae put life and limb at risk, fought against incredible numerical odds, and eventually perished holding off the Persians long enough for the rest of the allied Greeks troops to make good their escape to the south. For Mr. Gore to bleat that his facing of criticism of his ideas puts him on the same plane is both ridiculous and breath-taking.
I'd ask "Don't these people have any sense of proportion?" but I think we know the answer to that one. Their grossly over-inflated view of their own importance continues to boggle the mind....
(BTW, I wonder how long Mr. Gore would have lasted in the agoge. A little teaser about the nature of Sparta can be found here.
I think algore meant to liken his crusade to the movie from which this quote originated:
"Just when I thought you couldn't do anything dumber, you redeem yourself."

Sorry, Al, but you have it backwards. The "skeptics" are the brave 300 (or fewer) scientists who are the only ones with enough guts to stand up to the juggernaut of global warming alarmism.
