Barack Dukakis Obama: Live from Iowa

It's not a site I'd normally link to, but Krempasky felt compelled to send me this Wonkette link about Obama suffering from Dukakis syndrome.

As Wonkette notes, Dukakis, back in 1988, enraged Iowa farmers

when he suggested maybe they should consider not all being industrial agribusienss monocrop farmers and maybe try diversifying into fancier produce that could get a better price.

Obama, likewise proving himself to be as ordinary and common as John "the Haircut" Edwards, asked the crowd

“Anybody gone into Whole Foods lately and see what they charge for arugula?” the senator said. “I mean, they’re charging a lot of money for this stuff.”

The state of Iowa, for all of its vast food production, does not have a Whole Foods, a leading natural and organic foods market. The closest? Omaha, Minneapolis or Kansas City.

I don't have a Whole Foods anywhere near me either. I think it's an interesting comparison between John Edwards, Barack Obama and even Fred Thompson, or dare I say, Bill Clinton.

Thompson is famous for hanging out at a local diner in Nashville -- he'd do it as an actor, as a Senator, and even does it as a pseudo-Presidential contender. Likewise, Bill Clinton loved to go to the local McDonalds, rib shack, etc.

The only time Edwards or Obama would do such a thing was when they were campaigning. Let's not forget Edwards's anniversary trip to Wendy's where he and his wife got to pose with soldiers, "eat an anniversary meal," then promptly toss it and head to a $200.00 meal outside the reach of the hoi polloi.

First, there's no need to actually discuss it with Iowa farmers, so it's dumb. The point's not bad, but it's not the President's job to decide what crops they should be planting.

His job should include, however, immediately ending subsidies to all kinds of farmers, along with price controls and tariffs. Again, no need to tell them about it-- I don't get that. But it's about time our farmers moved into this millenium and actually had to work as a business. The excuses and the myriad of reasons you hear from them why apparently capitalism works for everyone but them, it's exhausting.

As for Fred and his diner, I guess it's fine, but I don't think it matters substantively. If that's what it takes to win, great, but I don't really care if he hob nobs locally so long as he works on stopping stealing everyone's money nationally.

Contrary to typical urban common knowledge, farmers are not stupid. If they could make more money by growing arugula, they probably would. Just to be sure, I checked around on the internet and found that arugula is a Mediterranean crop, not exactly suitable to the Iowa climate. It is probably more likely to be grown in California. All in all, Obama's comments come off as extremely condescending and completely out-of-touch with the typical Iowan. If I were opposition research, I would sell my first-born child to obtain a copy of video with Obama saying this.

What? Doesn't the average Iowa farmer grab a Starbucks on the way out to his fields? While his wife hits the local Whole Foods to pick up some 7 grain bread, soy milk, and some sushi for lunch?

Ask not what you can do for your country, ask what your country can do for you. Washington Elected Elite
