Bipartisan Bill to STOP the Pork

Rep. Steve Chabot (R.-Ohio), who has has voted against each of the 9 omnibus spending bills considered by the House in his 12 years of service to the U.S. Congress, has a plan to stop omnibus spending bills entirely.

Today he reintroduced the Stop the Omnibus Pork (STOP) to prohibit combining individual appropriations bills into a single spending bill. Chabot introduced the bipartisan legislation with Democrat Rep. Mark Udall (Colo.).

"It is time for Congress to get tough and eliminate wasteful spending," said in a statement. "These enormous omnibus bills have become a breeding ground for unnecessary and costly spending. The federal budget process should be open so that all proposed projects can be thoroughly reviewed and debated.”

Omnibus spending bills are created when Congress rolls unfinished appropriations bills into a single spending measure. They are usally rushed through at the end of a legislative session with little debate and no amendments. Because of this members are eager to put in line-items for pork barrel projects targeted to their home states and districts.

The STOP bill, H.Res.283 was originally introduced with 14 cosponsors and won praise from the National Taxpayers Union and the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste.

Sad to say, I can't see this going anywhere with the Democrats in charge. I wonder why this wasn't introduced when the Republicans were in control of Congress. As with so many other things they could have accomplished, they had their chance and blew it. Maybe next time.

In the Senate, there are only about 20-25 Republicans who can be counted upon to consistently vote against wasteful spending.

But I'm with scottbomb on this. Fat chance.

I meant what I said and I said what I meant. An elephant's faithful 100 percent.
