Dan Rather’s Last Big Story Is Himself
By Joe HaganIf he weren’t famous, he’d be mistaken for a veteran of a long-ago war: khaki safari shirt on his back, scuffed combat boots on his feet, that wiry crest of a brow, rheumy eyes under heavy lids, lower lip jutting out like an ornery fish resisting a hook.
When Dan Rather sits on a bench in Central Park to tell how his 44-year career at CBS News ended in ignominy and humiliation, he is in fact still waging a war, a bitter and personal one. And the memories of the battles that undid him are still fresh on his mind. “Monday morning, about 8:49—and I think that is the time precisely,” he says. He’s recalling January 10, 2005, when he first received the 224-page report commissioned by CBS that excoriated his infamous 60 Minutes Wednesday segment on President Bush’s National Guard service. Of that report, Rather says, “When I read through it, all I could say to myself, on each page, is, ‘What [expletive deleted]. What pure, unadulterated [expletive deleted] this whole thing is. What a setup. What a fix.’ ” He nearly spits the word fix.

He is going to charge, in the twilight of his life, against everything that you fear and hate, and will you let him do that alone? Can you really be so cold?

I am on my knees, right now - I have stretched out my keyboard so that I can type from the floor - in order to show how seriously I want the Online Left to do this. Take ranks behind this man. Charge that hill. If you be true men and women of your beliefs, follow him into the teeth of the storm and the mouth of Hell itself... or be forever known as abject cowards and trimmers, unable to screw your courage to the sticking point. Grasp hold of whatever honor that you have left and charge.

Back when I was on an overseas TV shoot, a member of Rather's crew in his famous "Afghanistan sneak" in 1980 told me that Rather hired a sound crew and movie crew from Rawalpindi in Pakistan and shot the whole sequence about ten miles from Peshawar---pretending to be in a dangerous Afghani battle zone.
Talk about "courage!!"
