Keep it Together, Part 2
Strap it up and get your head in the game

Stay in the huddle, boys and girls.
Yeah, I know. We were big for a while. Back in '94, we were on top. BMOC. And in this century, we won narrow, yeah, but we won. Those guys, they got so frustrated, they lost their composure...fielded teams with crazy yells, ascots, weird Vietnam obsessions. They were angry about losing, so they played angry, so they lost.
But then we got sloppy. We got stupid. We drafted some lames, and one or two guys worse than lames - people who didn't deserve to see the field got major minutes. We let people get cocky, and then get stupid. We started fighting over who should get the ball. We started talking behind each others backs. We started demanding bigger contracts - gotta feed the family, ya know? Or maybe buy that yacht.
And you know what they did? They lost so much, they finally fired enough bad coaches and found a few mediocre ones. They didn't get a lot smarter, just a little. Just smart enough to stop thinking squash games, and start thinking NASCAR. Just smart enough to say it was okay if everyone didn't have the same playbook sections on school prayer, on abortion, or guns - never run those plays any more, anyway. Just smart enough to send Heath freaking Shuler after us.
We laughed.
But dammit, they won. You have no idea how much losing can hurt until you've lost to Heath freaking Shuler.
Maybe we need a reminder about what this is all about, and about who it isn't about. Get your head in the game, and pay attention.
Look over there. You see that guy on the sideline? The one we all thought was taking us to the promised land a few years back? He proved what he could be, and what he couldn't. Yeah, he did some good things. But remember "building a permanent majority"? Remember "let's go to Mars"? Remember "Harriet Miers"? Yeah, you remember.
Some of you might hate him. Lots of you do. I don't, I still respect the guy, but that's okay, we don't have to agree on everything to play on this team.
But guess what: it doesn't matter, dammit. It does NOT matter. Let me clue you in to a freaking truth here: that guy ain't long for the sideline. His time is running out. He knows when he's packing up. And when he's gone, it's not going to matter any more what he thinks. We're still gonna to be out here on this field, fighting our guts out, unless we give up and go home crying. And you're not gonna do that, are ya?
Some of you are all torqued up about who the next guy is gonna be calling the plays. Some of you feel like you don't fit into his scheme, so you're already whining about it, about deserting the team depending on who wears the headset.
Hell, I hear ya. I don't have a lot of confidence in any of these guys they're talking about in the papers. I know I'll get pissed off if they start calling quarterback sneaks every play, I've already got a bum knee.
But you know what? I'm still here. You're still here. And you know what, here's the truth, whoever it is: they ALL need us if they're going to win.
So stop it. Stop the whining, stop the excuses. Stop looking over to that sideline for leadership. You look here, you look in the huddle, you look at your teammates. It's not his job any more to get us on the same page - it's ours.
The Gipper ain't walking through that door. And good thing, too. If he were, he'd be ashamed.
Pull that turf out of your facemask. Get your head in the game. Start thinking about what we can do together when we put our minds to it. What we can do right.
No one else can do that. This is on us. Let's take it back, starting now.

These posts are great, but I think we have a real concern on our hands. I don't think that people really understand how much of a threat that Ron Paul's $5 million dollar haul is, and that ignoring him is going to cost us this war. The public sentiment is clearly against the war, and now look at this! (http://www.ronpaulnation.com/?p=172)
We need to get people off the stage who aren't for real at this point. Brownback needs to go. Huckabee needs to go. I wish Romney would leave, he's wasting our time. It's clear that Giuliani is going to win this thing. We need to put pressure on everybody else to drop out so that we can unify our front and get on the same page about selling our presence in Iraq. America isn't properly scared of the consequences of losing this war! If they start listening to this idiot we could lose control of our party!
People need to take this more seriously!
I was thinking the same thing, get the thing narrowed down! but I don't think the other guys are going to roll over, esp. Ron Paul.
[I could get defeatist at this point, considering the brilliant idea floating around of a third party to make the election a landslide/slam dunk for Hillary. So she can claim "a huge mandate!" for every socialist policy she signs/executive orders into law. But I won't. I mean that would really change the world for the better wouldn't it!]
btw, that video was like "politics for dummies, REAL dummies, or drunk guys" Who exactly is their intended audience?
although I'd vote for him in the general:
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/27_of_republican...
Romney or Fred are probably our best hope, but as I've said, I'll vote for anyone who wins the GOP nomination.
I've followed this site a long time. If coming in and voicing my concern about the real issues we face in this election aren't welcome, then what the hell is this thread about?
The elitism in this party is going to do us in. I can't even voice a concern without being jumped on.
Unbelievable.
My apologies if that seemed short.
My concern in your comment is that this particular thread was suppossed to focus on sticking together (hence the title) and your initial comments were about tossing out one of the top three candidates as a minor player.
I just don't take Romney's candidacy seriously. He's John Kerry in Republican clothing. The only reason he's a top candidate is because he's got money. I wish he would stop this ego charade, because he's strangling our party right now.
I'd like for you to read this post:
http://cmondisplay.com/2007/10/04/ron-paul-could-win-iowa/
You guys have your heads in the sand if you don't think that a defeatist streak is creeping into our party.
Once you read it, I'll take my apology and my name restored. I might have been pissed and frustrated today, but I'm not going to retreat in the face of adversity. We have a fight on our hands, and if you guys are going to fail to recognize the nature of the enemy, step aside for the people that do.
Here's this from the managing editor of the Iowa Independent:
http://cmondisplay.com/2007/10/04/ron-paul-could-win-iowa/
You might hot stuff behind your moderator tools, but you can't read a political trend to save your life. This Ron Paul story is a threat to our nation, and if I'm going to be branded a heretic for trying to wake people up about it, then so be it.
I'd much rather be sporting my original name, or GiulianiAgent.
And for those who were complaining about me saying that a mormon can't win... Welcome to the Republican party. We don't pull punches, and we don't fall for BS political correctness. Mormonism doesn't sell to the mass electorate. This isn't groundbreaking news here. People just don't get it, and Romney isn't the guy who's going to be able to make that sell, no matter how much money he pumps into his campaign.
We need electability, and Giuliani is the only candidate who can beat Hillary. If we don't consolidate power soon, and get a single message out there of peace, prosperity and security behind a winning strategy in Iraq, we're going to find ourselves in a dog fight within our own party down the road. Polls don't mean nothing now. Votes are what counts.
It's time to consolidate power and crush the Paul momentum now.
Not 100% convinced on your moby status, honestly* - but, hey, badmouthing a Director, coupled with a previous Good-bye, Cruel World and no apology for previous bad language? Don't need to worry about that any more. Thanks!
Also? Bye.

your screen name is "ron paul agent" and your postings are what one would expect from a Ron Paul agent, kind of originall in a way. You like to write the name Ron Paul, you tell us Ron Paul is about to take over our party, you tell us Ron Paul will win New Hampshire, you say Romney should focus on Ron Paul in the debate.
heh

But until you have some posting history and we know where you're coming from, don't expect to waltz in and make blanket statements without getting taken for a troll.
Sorry, but given the level of 1 day wonders in the last couple of weeks, that's just the way it is. I would suggest you make your comments a little more pointed and add your rationale for a while. That will generate discussion rather than questions about who you are and why you're here.

CongressCritter™: Never have so few felt like they were owed so much by so many for so little.
I've lurked on this site a long time, feeling that people pretty much voiced my opinions in one form or another, and that my voice wouldn't make a lick of difference. I felt compelled to start posting because as a trend forcaster in marketing, I watched a serious development yesterday in the Ron Paul 3rd Quarter announcement, and everybody here ignoring the significance of what this truly means for our cause.
I'm here because I want people to wake up to the fact that we can't be all talk about this. We can't sit back expecting the public to come around to us because it's Hillary. Clinton won once before because a pip-squeak weasel split our party in half, and I see it happening again! I can't help but getting worked up about this because WE CAN'T LET THIS HAPPEN!
I just want people to wake up to the stakes in this game. If Hillary and Obama team up down the road, we're in the fight of our lives with THEM and against Ron Paul. People, people, people! Wake up! Imagine 8 years of Hillary followed by another 8 of Obama! That's absolute worse case scenario, but we have to consider it.
We can't afford the luxury right now of watching nobody candidates who are just up on the stage for ego. We need to consolidate and start working our message. People need to understand what's at stake. If people aren't afraid of Islamofascism, we need to make them scared! They need to understand that our way of life is at stake! Even Glen Beck is starting to turn into a Ron Paul pussy. Did you hear his show today?
People need to appreciate the stakes here. That's why I felt I needed to come out of the woodwork, because I'm just not sensing the importance here.
I can see that nobody is going to take this threat seriously until it's too late. I'm depressed that I've been painted with the vile brush of this defeatist. I thought I was doing my part, but clearly you are judged here harshly if you don't toe the line.
I'll leave you guys to your back patting session.
Please delete my account. I'll take up the fight elsewhere.
You post a comment with your rationale included and we get to figure out right away that you're pretty much either a troll or an idiot. Or and idiot troll.
We're sensing that you're not nearly as important as you think you are.
But thanks for dropping by. It was fun while it lasted.

"If they start listening to this idiot we could lose control of our party!"
What are you talking about? Ron Paul is the closest thing we have had to traditional conservatism since Barry Goldwater. That is why the Goldwater family backs him.
Possibly the "we" that you are concerned about losing control, is the neoconservatives. If that is the case, well then, yes, you should be nervous. Because the traditional conservatives plan to take our Party and our country back from all the big government socialists that exist on both sides of the aisle.
Being as you've certainly were around when the Directors indicated that the time where one could safely use 'neoconservatives' as a smear meaning 'Republican you don't like' had passed.

One day I think Mitt's my guy, the next day I think Fred's the guy, the next day I think Rudy's the guy. The 24/7 news cycle gives us a reason each day that we should like or dislike someone. The 24/7 media also gins up mini-scandals non-stop. There's thousands of bloggers with thousands of opinions - some are better than others. Various partisans spin polls and speeches and debates a million different ways. I don't know which way is up anymore in this campaign. I'll just be glad when we have our nominee nailed down. I promise, I will staunchly support whomever it is.
“.....women and minorities hardest hit”
I think what people aren't fully appreciating is that they are infiltrating OUR party! It's like the immigration issue all over again! Are you prepared to vote for Ron Paul if he manages to get the nomination? I know that people think that it's far fetched, but look at the facts: he's got almost as much cash on hand as any other top tier candidate, and that's coming from a relative media blackout. Now his freaking robots are registering their uneducated voters as Republicans so that they can get him elected in the primaries. If you look at a state like New Hampshire, a large part of their population is either picking a candidate but not settled on them, or are undecided altogether! I don't think people full appreciate the threat here!
If Ron Paul manages to win the New Hampshire primary, we're going to have a fight on our hands the entire way to the Republican National Convention. And given the mood of the country towards Republicans and the War, I'm afraid. We're going to have Sheik Abdulla Al Suicide Bomber following us home if we surrender in Iraq! We can't let that happen.
We need consolidation, and we need it quick. No more Romney attacking Rudy crap that weakens our front runner and costs us voters. At least McCain has the decency to talk about himself and his own accomplishments.
We need to pull together quick before our party completely splinters and the best pro-war candidate to vote for is a Democrat! We can't let this Ron Paul nonsense derail our party. We have to take this threat seriously and squish it now before the sickness infects our party, and we're full of idiots who want to lose the war in Iraq, and retreat from our worldwide military outposts.
If Romney is going to attack someone, he should go after Ron Paul on Tuesday night's debate. At least if Ron Paul makes Romney look like a fool, we're not losing anything. Nobody is going to elect a mormon... get real.
Right up 'til then you were interesting. You probably want to think about how you're going to explain that to a moderator.

Well said.
I have been waiting to read those words for such a long time I forgot what I was waiting for.
What really gets my goat lately are all of these posts that link to talking head [fill-in-the-blank] and his opinion about GOP candidate [fill-in-the-blank]. How is this any different from what Media Matters is doing to Rush? I like to visit this site and read what the candidates say in their own words and context. I don't think it's right to interpret what is it they are thinking in their heads. Nobody but the candidate really knows that.
I also think it's waaaaay to early to declare a winner and insist that every Republican must pledge their support to him. Some, including myself, are not too keen about Rudy. Just back off and accept that for now. You will not win new support for Rudy if you beat us over the head with all of this inevitability BS.

"One man with courage makes a majority" - Andrew Jackson
We all know who the refs are. The partisan media, the arbiters of what is true, and what is newsworthy. And all 7 Zebras are cheating like crazy for the other side.
So take them down. The media are composed of individuals who are liars and cheats, who practice ever-more-naked partisan politics, but will deny it with their last breath.
They are a large part of the success of the enemy. George Allen was taken down PURELY by the media. The Florida debacle was created by the media, and it's very likely that Congress seats were lost on the left coast (certainly Cantwell won because of the early call for Gore). So twice in the last decade the media created a Dem majority in the Senate.
They are the enemy.
Punish the media EVERY WAY THERE IS TO DO SO. I don't have alot of strong ideas about how precisely, but let's declare now that we will give them no quarter. For starters, never, never, EVER give them any money, not one penny. Never buy a NYT, WP, BG, or LAT hard copy.
When articles and columns appear that slander (or libel, I lose track) -- write a nasty-gram to the author. My personal advice -- make it short, to the point, clear of vulgarity, but there's no need to be otherwise polite.
When the DC press corps idiots like Terry Moron just get abusive to the president or his PS, then write a nasty-gram to him, and to the president of the ABC News Division.
Quit buying crap that is advertised on the NBC/ABC/CBS news hours. Tell the advertiser why you are not buying their stuff.
When the press misrepresents Rush, fight them. Fill their in-boxes. Write blogs condemning them (and on these, you can be verbose, cite references).
And my message to Congress-People and Senators who visit RedState. Remember what Dick Cheney said to Pat Leahy? Remember why? Did you know that rank-and-file Republicans LOVE Dick Cheney, and that moment stands out as a big reason why. You have EVERY reason to treat rude questioners rudely. And when some reporter misrepresents you in a very bad way, that person does not have to be allowed at your pressers.
It's already BEEN war for decades. Quit playing nice.
It's war -- so when can we start shooting back at the enemy Democrats?

to ask and answer questions! In my fulltime advocacy days, I spent maybe 25% of my witness preparation time on what they would say and the other 75% on how they would say it. Most of the reporters are wannabe lawyers and they ask scumbag lawyer questions, almost all of which would be objectionable. The lead and ask the stupid Republcan to agree with them. They ask compound questions that assume facts not in evidence. They testify for two minutes and the question is asking you to agree with it. There's got to be some Republican lawyers around who'd take on a pro bono project of just teaching Republican elected and appointed officials how to handle questions; starting with "Just because they asked it doesnt' mean you have to answer it!" You can teach an ordinary witness, somebody who's job is NOT to deal with adversarial procedings, how to do this in a few minutes. "No, Mr. Smith, that isn't what I said. What I said was.." comes pretty readily to most people IF they know they are free to do it. Why do these people feel compelled to suck up to these scumbags and try to answer rather than argue?
In Vino Veritas
to deal with the press needs to start at once. Any more ideas on how to make it a reality?. It almost seems like a training program using CD's etc, could be a start at least.
a politician to do anything? They just got elected or appointed, so they know everything. Most any half-assed experienced advocate could do it, but getting any of them to listen is a whole 'nuther matter.
In Vino Veritas
but hopefully, since we're at the point where some people are going to be without a job if they don't convince enough voters to support them; it would be a little bit easier to convince them that they should try to learn to handle questions and situations better. I believe Webb would not be the senator from Virginia if Allan had not stepped in to the Macaca trap. I could be wrong, but I think he could have been taught to avoid that type of mistake.

It's the coach and the players on the field that are losing this game. They haven't been fighting hard enough and they let the opponent get away with penalties on a regular basis.
But unlike a football game, I can't just leave in disgust. The consequences are real, and they affect us all.
So what can a mere fan like me do? I contribute to one of the players (Fred) and I'll support whoever our nominee is. But the team as a whole (the RNC) isn't getting ONE RED CENT from me until they get some new leadership (*ahem* Martinez, meet the door....) and dump this "New Tone" playbook in the bonfire where it belongs.
I'll keep wearing my Fred t-shirts and pins & I'll send him a few bucks when I can afford it. I'll keep blogging (preaching to the choir?) and I'll keep trying to spread the message to friends and family. I'll boo my senators and congressman when they screw up (which is rare - God bless Texas) and I'll praise them when they run good plays.
What else can I do? I'm just a fan.

Reject him, that voice that cries Doom, Doom, Doom, Doom, and fight until the end.
Maybe it's time to stop blaming some of the players, or a perceived lack of teamwork -- maybe it's the fundamental strategy that's flawed.
Maybe Americans have realized that invading a country that didn't threaten us and had nothing to do with 9/11, and leaving our troops in a no-win situation there was a bad idea.
Maybe Americans have realized that giving the President the power to ignore the 4th Amendment and spy on us, or the 6th Amendment and lock people up forever is a bad idea, particularly when the next President might be Hillary Clinton.
Maybe Americans really want the borders secured and our immigration laws enforced, not as part of a deal to appease the Party's corporate sponsors, but for simple common sense.
Maybe Americans have realized that deficits do matter, and we can't keep adding trillions more to the national debt forever without destroying the dollar and our children's future.

You can just scroll thru the previous 72 posts, all well intentioned, and see we are all over the place. At the same time, you can see the Democrats, particularly Hillary, are on a roll. We need to get our candidate and strategy in order and fast, if we are going to be able to mount a competitive campaign against her. We can sit and whine all we want, but she's already moving the ball and we're still piddling around with candidates still wanting their 15 minutes of fame. I'm tired of various conservative constituencies, all with valid concerns, but all threatening to desert this candidate or that one, simply because he doesn't line up with their values. We need to come together and focus on defeating Hillary - period. That is the greater good. If anyone thinks that with the potential departures from the Supreme Court over the next eight years, are not reason enough to get on board, I suggest you brace yourself, you're in for a rude awakening and you will not like it.
Amen. There should be enough in the campaign finance scandals, alone, to make sure that another Clinton is never allowed near the White House. The Soros connections, along with his background is another scandal that needs to bought out at every opportunity. There are many others, that need to be explored.
Some that I think are important:
Voter ID laws-why would any American oppose Voter ID requirements?
Check off ballots for elections-why would any American oppose secret ballot election?
The list could go on and on.
Just think of what the Democrat political leadership claims they stand for, and ask how that is good for America?
