Meehan is Leaving Congress in July

Special Election to Come

Rep. Marty Meehan (D.-Mass.) of campaign finance infamy announced he will be leaving Congress in July to become the chancellor of the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, as long as his nomination is approved by the school's board of trustees.

This will trigger a special election.

"The decision to leave the House has been the most difficult professional decision of my life," Meehan said in a statement. "It has been a true honor to represent the people of my district and of our state in the House of Representatives. Being a member of Congress has been the best job I have ever had."

Currently, Meehan has at least two bills pending in Congress. One is to revamp the public campaign system by increasing the amount of money voluntarily donated on income tax forms from $3 to $10. Another is to repeal the military's policy of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

The board of trustees will be voting on Meehan's nomination Wednesday.

Bush got 37% of the vote here in 2000. Not as promising as one might hope.

Hell will freeze over before MA elects another Republican (for anything other than perhaps Governor - and even that will be a long while now).

I don't care if the entire Democrat State Gov't/apparatus in MA is awash in a multitude of scandals - the people of MA will never give Republicans, conservatives or even liberatarians a chance.

Nothing to see here folks - move along, move along...

This is precisely the type of thinking that will lead to even more defeats for the GOP.

Do you think the Dems were thinking in 2004 and 2005 (right after the Bush and GOP victory) hmmmmm hell will freeze over before we work to recruit, fund, and mobilize candidates for very red seats.

NO!

They started working early and hard to recruit, fund, and mobilize candidates even in the reddest of seats.

They were very successful.

Because they understand that politics is the art of the possible, they refused to be bound by some "red state/blue state" divide which obsesses so many conservatives.

I call it the Miller effect, after the NRO writer who essentially tells Republicans what Senate seats they can win and which they cannot (TWO YEARS BEFORE THE RELEVANT ELECTION).

Listen, if there is any time that the GOP would win a congressional seat in Mass. it is now.

1) The dems control everything in Mass.
2) The new Dem Governor, Deval Patrick, is quite unpopular and getting bad press from even the Liberal Media Organs of Boston.
3) For years, Mass voters have balanced their almost complete leftist representatives with a GOP check in the form of a GOP Governor...this is now gone, and I daresay this is beginning to trouble a good many Mass voters.
4) Since this is a special election (no up ticket candidates), there is less advantage for the Dems in terms of mobilization etc.

We need to recruit, fund, and mobilize a strong GOP candidate and fight for this seat.

Even if we don't win it, a strong contest will show the Dems that we are going to fight them for every seat to regain our majority, even in unlikely areas.

I fear that this is where the Left Netroots have vanquished us. Instead of actually focusing on elections like this one where a little hard work can pay off big time, we at Red State instead post and post and post and post about a Presidential Election that is more than a YEAR AWAY!

Let's get it together.

politicians via their federal tax forms?
I always thought it was a weak attempt at satire - a bored govt. employee with a hidden desire to be a writer for SNL or Comedy Central perhaps.
Like we don't see enough campaign advertising...

I assume you know that check the box 'yes' does not increase your tax bill. IMO good thing to check yes because it takes some of the lobbying force out of political donations. Just look at the McCain Obama agreement to run on public money if both nominated by their respective parties.

You mean they just 'print' that money as opposed to extracting it from the hides of us citizens?
Must be some kinda magic or somethin'.

Although your personal tax bill or refund will not change, we (taxpayers) will have to fund the increased government spending on campaigns somehow. So expect higher fees, taxes or deficit spending in the future.
Don't be an enabler and feed the greed.
A lightly funded and weak central government is in the best interest of each and every citizen.

that candidates only get money if they agree to spending caps and their party received a certain minimum % of the vote in the last election (10%?). None of the major party candidates are expected to accept public money this time around.

Is really a sub-par school. Not much of a move up for Meehan (although I guess anything is better than being a bottom feeder congressman).

Now the good citizens of Mass will have an opportunity elect a real conservative to that seat!

watch for the scandal to break before he can scram.
