On Mike Deaver & Fred Thompson: A Response

Not an endorsement

Earlier, Mark Kilmer wrote about a Daily Telegraph article that appeared yesterday - focusing on very complimentary things that Mike Deaver had to say about Fred Thompson (which, by the way, I circulated to the RedState contributor list without actually checking with Mike, which was pretty dumb)

Since this article has been swirling around, I talked with Mike about the news. He asked me to post this note, crystal clear:

“Fred Thompson is a great guy, but I haven’t endorsed anyone in the Republican primary, and don’t intend to.”

FWIW, the article was written based on a video that Mike recorded for some London colleagues, you can see the entire context here.

The full context makes more sense, and it pretty much fits what I wrote this morning. Deaver said that Thompson's entry would alter the dynamics of the race, that Thompson can enter late, and that the rules of this race have not been yet written: "You ain't seen nothing yet."

That he mentioned Gore on the Dem side having a similar effect adds some balance.

I don't know that my "headline" was entirely misleading, given what I know now of what Mr. Deaver said, although to balance it, he's behind a Thompson candidate in a similar sense to how he'd be behind a Gore candidacy were he a Democrat. The idea of either candidacy is exciting.

He's very good at what he does.

My apologies to Mr. Deaver if I did not reflect that in my post. I only had the story to go on. I must admit the story had me encouraged, but I can understand his position.

Please give my regards to Mr. Deaver.

I wrote "More Fred Thompson Good Signs" which focused on the same article.
