Open Thread: Petraeus/Crocker report due... September 11

Karl Rove is still with the White House, but this may be coincidental. You see, the White House says that General David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker will render their September Iraq progress report to Congress and the six year anniversary of the terrorists' attack on the U.S. mainland.

The September progress report is seen in Washington as a pivotal milestone in assessing whether the Pentagon's so-called surge strategy has worked. That strategy has aimed to establish enough security to allow Iraqi politicians to move toward reconciliation.

The report was due on September 15, a Saturday. Johndroe [White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe] said congressional schedules would likely dictate a September 11 or September 12 hearing date.

Curiously, Johndroe noted this news on a plane headed to Canada. (Well, he was with the President on Air Force One for the NAFTA summit in Montebello, Quebec, with Canadian Prime Minister Steve Harper and Mexican President Felipe Calderon.

So was this Rove or just the guy who directed Rove to appear on the Sunday Shows?

Whomever. This is an open thread.

from the southern most point in Iraq all the way to the northern most point. And it'll be filled with Mexican truck drivers.

OVP by Yil

What is up with Cheney? In his response to Leahy today he once again claimed the OVP isn't part of the Executive Office of the President. That was a politically dumb move the first time and Leahy's response today was to point to the White House website clearing saying it is. I thought he was over this delusion, but I remember seeing him waffle on the answer to Larry King a few weeks ago, but now to claim this in a formal letter to Congress I think he's making another mistake. It won't have the impact it did the first time, but it's just stupid...

Of course Cheney does have a point about him having nominal Senate tie breaking duties and being paid by the Senate. However if I'm not mistaken the VP was originally the looser of the general election. I think Washington's VP was the guy he was running against! Thus the original intent was that the tie-breaking vote be of a different political party than the President. I have no idea when the VP changed to a running mate, but I'm pretty sure that is the historical reason for the current oddity.

Whatever the interesting argument might be, making statements that the entire population believe to be wrong is not the way to inspire confidence, nor to encourage people to trust your judgment.
