And not by a little, either - Tom Coburn proves himself the most effective (and by no coincidence, least-compromising) member of the United States Senate. This Bloomberg article shows EXACTLY why we call him what we do. And trust me, this is about as polite as he gets:
In the final weeks of the session, lawmakers try to save time by passing many bills without voting -- which requires unanimous consent from the entire body. Coburn has warned his colleagues he will automatically block any legislation that increases spending. In a letter to his colleagues, he advised them ``to contact me as soon as possible so I have sufficient time to read and review your bills'' so ``we can work out any differences.''
And by "work out any differences", you can imagine him to say, "I can beat you about the head and shoulders with this chair I have here."

CongressCritter™: Never have so few felt like they were owed so much by so many for so little.
I want to clone Tom Colburn and replace the other 99 senators with the clones. Why do we have so few in Washington with less than half the character on Senator Colburn? As a Citizenry we need to search out men and women that want to be in Washington to serve their country, not to serve themselves. I ask each of you to look at the candidates you support and ask yourself: “Is this candidate a Statesman or is he/she in this for their own glory and well being?” We desperately need more Tom Colburns. Do your part in fixing the problem.
I sent Tom Coburn an email last year asking him to throw his hat in the ring and he (or more accurately, one of his staff) replied that he just wasn't interested at this time, and felt he could do more good in the Senate right now.
I'm going to hold him to "at this time" and hope that he runs in the future.
To be honest, as much as I like Coburn, he's got about as much chance of being elected President as I do.
Bush won close to 66% of the vote in 2004 in Oak. Coburn won about 52%. Even assuming the 3rd party in the race split down the middle, (he didn't, he was very liberal and took more votes away from the D) that still leaves Coburn with about 55-56%, 10% under Bush.
That's simply not going to get you elected nationwide.

If my man Bond was half the Senator that Sen. Coburn is.
I meant what I said and I said what I meant. An elephant's faithful 100 percent.
Coburn's primary was the first race I followed closely and blogged about. I still don't like some of his more extreme views, but I knew he'd spend his time doing this kind of stuff and I love it.

in the hands of a man who doesn't care if he's re-elected or not and is not interested in being a careerist in the Senate.
So much can be done by just a single Senator. Yes, the full Senate might just go around him, but they'll have to go about it the long and hard way - taking roll call vote after roll call vote to pass even the simplest of measures.
