So, Senator Obama, when did we start rounding up Arab-American families?
Terrifyingly, the ad below was thought to be a *good* idea.

Were you doing that Sliders dimension-hopping fanfic/cosplay thing again?
(Originally via Riehl World View, although the comments section gave me pause.)
Anyway, when did we start doing this? In fact, why did we start doing this? Even if the current Presidential administration actually had taken the rather insensitive and bigoted assumption that Arab = Islamist (note suffix) terrorist/terrorist sympathizer (which, might I note, is a very difficult charge to make against the Bush administration while still keeping a straight face, much to the disappointment of various and sundry progressive masochism fetishists), it remains true that the vast majority of Arab-Americans are not Muslims, and that the vast majority of American Muslims are not Arabs. I somehow doubt that the government can be simultaneously dumb enough to carry out a boneheaded policy of rounding up Arab-American families, while at the same time being clever enough to simultaneously keep it off of the nightly news and not manage to round up Maronites by mistake.
(pause)
Look them up, Senator. Then explain the difference to your acolytes. It apparently doesn't register with them unless you say it.

Since when is this okay?
The man is bold-faced lying and NO ONE calls him out?
Gaw-I hate him more and more with each passing day.
I hated Clinton long before he ever became president, yet when we endured his 8 years of sex in the city by the Potomac, I never did subscribe to Clinton derangment syndrome like some.
I can honestly say that if this lying fool gets elected, I am going to have full on ODS long before inauguration day.
throwing "fear bombs".
AGH!!!!!!!!!!!! I am going to need Prozac very soon.
Do you think BHO will pay for it?
His wife is the angriest potential first lady I have ever seen. What a great team they would make. I'm tapped out on money for both Mcain $2,300 & Nader $2,300. Lokks like its time to vollunter at their campaings & put out signs and bumper stickers. I just can't sit here and watch these idiots run their mouths. I've got to get out and help.
A hundred years ago the populace might be forgiven for not twigging on to what was going on. There was no radio, TV or news wire services so what one knew about current events outside one's local area was limited and slow to come. But in this day and age of TV, radio, wire services, electronic recordings and especially the Internet it is hard to think that this kind of blatant demagoguery can result in cheers and accolades. There are none so blind as they that will not see.
A great many times in American history things have looked bleak and potentially disasterous and we have survived if not prospered (perhaps Bismark was right that "God watches over fools, children, drunks and the United States.") But I fear that the ascension of Barack and Michelle Obama to the throne will make our darkest years look like a cakewalk.

I seriously doubt that one out of hundred even registered the absurdity of what he said, or ANYTHING he said. He could have said
"I am going to go out there and pick my nose in public, because there are people in America without noses."
[WILD APPLAUSE]
"I will personally attain the Holy Grail, because there are people in this country who are without grails."
[WILD APPLAUSE -- WOMEN FAINTING]
is that you are, in fact, correct. And that he can, and will, parlay that idiocy into a November victory.

We look at Obama and think you have to be kidding whats there. We don't understand or even relate to whats driving his success.

I have tried desperately to explain to both my liberal and conservative friends that Barack Obama is far worse (and far less competent) than Hillary Clinton. People are just now waking up to this fact, but I fear it may be too late.
Just let them be hypnotized by this shiny little weasel and we will go on to elect Johnny Mac. And hopefully be rid of the Clintons on the national stage in the bargain--win, win, win.
to be shut of the Clintons, my concern is that with the absolutely stunning level of idiocy and slavishness being displayed by the Obamamaniacs McCain cannot overcome it in November.
I think we will see a significant, perhaps even overwhelming, "if you don't vote for Obama you are a racist" mindset --- and white guilt will overtake not only liberals. I think McCain is going to find it almost impossible to bring rational argument to the arena in the face of it.

please, I'm aving a tough enough problem dealing with McCain without tossing Graham into the pot as well :-)

Is this not true? Honest question
Are you saying its happening now ?
Are you saying it was because of their religious belief and not other reasons ?
The article doesn't make the case you'd like it to anyway.
Thankfully, the American people rallied to our defense. President Bush spoke out forcefully against hate crimes, as did countless others across the nation. Both the Senate and the House of Representatives unanimously passed resolutions condemning hate crimes against Arab Americans and Muslims. Federal, state and local law enforcement investigated and prosecuted hate crimes, and ordinary citizens defended and protected us, refusing to allow bigots to define America. We will always be grateful that our fellow Americans defended us at that crucial time.

And true or not, it's tripe. If you've got a problem with this particular set of "facts" write a blog about it. Oh, and can you find any sourced articles or information that's more recent than when the Twin Towers site still had smoke rising?

So it can be true, but still "tripe"? Interesting.
Don't you think that this "round-up" is what Obama was referring to?

You have due process given to the people and an acknowledgement by the author that were in violation of our laws.
Brilliant. Do you feel that we should have been more lax than normal in the aftermath of 9/11 ?

I certainly don't think we should have "been more lax".
My only point is that I think this incident is what Obama was referring to.
That's all.
on the top of your head.
You "think" this is what Obama was referring to. Gee.
Now, back to the point at hand. This particular incident is, in fact, tripe. We had just been attacked, smoke was still rising from the WTC site. I'm shocked we only "rounded up" 1200 Arab/Muslim type folks. And given that there was/has been virtually no legal action taken as a result, I come back to "tripe". Oh, and do you have a more recent example of this "bad" behaviour?
If you've got a point related to this - or other - incidents, make it. Otherwise, go etch the walls of your cave.

I am no grammarian but "being rounded up" is present tense, happening now. If you wanted to speak of an incident in the past you would leave off the being.
Then there is "Without benefit of counsel". Both the references you supply explicitly state that there was benefit of counsel and the second says formal charges were brought.
Given the circumstances AG Ashcroft acted with laudable restraint. As you pointed out President Wilson a Democrat considerably overstepped his authority. Then there is FDR who imprisoned entire groups of American Citizens. Many whose families were here from before there was a country.

Good points, Joliphant - I think that answers my question.
Obama really needs to be more careful about making these kinds of statements.
The present/past tense thing is a bit strange... if he was referring to the present, he wouldn't have specified Ashcroft as the AG. Perhaps him using "If" to start the sentence is to suggest it as more of a hypothetical?
That was me referring to the time frame of the incidents you cited.

I wasn't aware that the video didn't mention Ashcroft. I am on a very slow dial-up, which makes it impossible to watch any videos on the web, so I did a search to see if I could find the text for the video - what I found was this on TIME , but evidently it is not the same schpeel:
"I don't just have to worry about my own child. I have to worry about the child that cannot read. It's not enough that I am part of the African-American community. I've got to worry about the Arab-American family that John Ashcroft is rounding up, because I might be next.
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,995609-2,00.html
Sorry for the confusion....my bad. Like I said, he REALLY needs to be more careful about this stuff!
I just listened to it again
"If there is an Arab American Family being rounded up without the benefit of an attorney"
Perhaps what you have is just what they heard.
He may need to be more careful. I doubt he can. Its who he is. When you meet the archetype you will understand why.

Finally figured it out - the video is from the Dem 04 convention (correct?) and the Time magazine article refers to "Obama at a rally for Senator Russ Feingold in Milwaukee", so they are two slightly different speeches. ( So I don't think it's any "creative editing" by TIME)

Neil, can you point out my "attacks"?
I am answering every question posed to me as politely as possible.
You're making a habit of this form of posting. You bring up the lefty talkign points, but do so in the form of a question, asking us to confirm or deny, giving you plausible deniability.
Don't do it again. If you have a point to make, make it and back it up. Don't ask us, tell us your viewpoint. Don't waste our time.
I mean it.

Why were there a bunch of Kerry/Edwards signs in the audience? When did Obama make this speech? Dem convention 2004?
Amazing that he could go from speaking as a lowly state legislator at one convention, to (presumably) speaking at the subsequent convention as the nominee. Especially after saying this kind of stuff.

Not because the man is such a yutz. Its just that no one except the rightwing blogs will call him on being a yutz. The press is going to bury this like it never happened. If questioned they will ignore it.
