Lefties see problem in Obama presser (UPDATE)

A question of judgement

By Soren Dayton Posted in | | | Comments (30) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »

Todd Beeton at MyDD said it, not me. I'm just quoting:

First is Obama's statement that he guesses he didn't know Wright as well as he thought he did. "The person that I saw yesterday was not the person that I had come to know over 20 years." That's a big problem for someone running on judgment.

UPDATE:

Openleft:

It is a jarring juxtaposition to hear a candidate denounce his own pastor while simultaneously talking about the need for mutual understanding and to bridge the divides between people. The whole thing actually feels like a logical fallacy.

What else is out there? Put it in the comments!

Nobody's buying it, Barack.

“.....women and minorities hardest hit”

Are you saying that Barack Obama thinks the US had 9-11 coming, thinks the government infected black people with AIDS and that Farakhan is a swell guy? I think that this damages Obama's claim about good judgement, but I don't think Obama is Wright. Obama should be embarrassed that he didn't know Wright as well as he thought he did.

This man's hate-filled sermons were recorded and sold by his "Church".

Obama's books are inspired by lines from Wright's sermons - including "The Audacity of Hope".

He has publicly called Wright his mentor.

Wright married him and his wife.

He took his children to Wright's "Church".

He has donated over $50000 to that "Church."

You know all this ... and you're actually buying Obama's story that he had no idea of just how crazy his mentor was?

Just how hypnotic are the words Hope™ and Change™?

I just read a partial transcript and the one thing that really stuck out to me was Barack's refusal to call him his spirtitual mentor. This is complete BS given that Barack has previously said many times over that Jeremiah led him to Jesus. Call me silly, but when someone leads you to Jesus and then continues to preach to you on Sunday, marries you and your wife, and baptizes your children, he's pretty much a mentor.

We all need to hush up now though and let this man wrap up the nomination. He will be shark bait come November.

buy a good portion of his social conservatism, yet I go almost every Sunday and my wife and I drop our envelope in the basket every week. I know that Rev Wright is a crackpot and I think that Obama's close relationship with him shows Obama's lack of judgement. I agree that Obama's relationship with Wright is a legitimate campaign issue - on the basis of judgement. I do not think it is legitimate to imply that Obama believes the garbage that Wright has spewed.

She's just not as animated and forthcoming.

Now admittedly, I'm Catholic, so a pastor does not necessarily have the same "ownership" of the church or congregation as does Rev Wright in his church. When he says something I disagree with, I just shake my head and say a little prayer.

Its not like there is a shortage.

"Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it."
-Thomas Paine: The American Crisis, No. 4, 1777

My family and I like the other priests and we like the programs at the church. My wife and kids love Summer Bible Camp and other activities for the kids. I don't see why I should have to drive farther to find a priest I like. It may get to that point, but for now, I'm waiting him out. He has to be re-assigned some day.

... and being a social conservative is different both in degree and kind from being the type of person who would stand behind a pulpit and preach active hatred and promoting conspiracy theories in the name of God.

I do not think it is legitimate to imply that Obama believes the garbage that Wright has spewed.

To be honest, I find it hard to believe that Wright himself actually believes the spew that comes out of his own mouth. He actually strikes me as a canny con-man who's figured out - just like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton - how to make money (see his $1.6 million retirement home in a 95% White gated neighborhood) using race and grievance as wedges to divide.

... Rev Wright is a crackpot and I think that Obama's close relationship with him shows Obama's lack of judgement.

More than that, it shows a lack of character, especially if he does indeed not believe the same as Wright.

I really don't think you comprehend just how poisonous what Wright actively spread from the pulpit - with Obama sitting in the pews for twenty+ years - actually is. He deliberately corroded minds and sowed seeds of hate in the minds of his parishioners.

For Obama to have sat there, donating thousands of dollars and only saying something critical when it was clear that the issue was hurting his campaign shows more than a lack of judgment. He knew better ... and he did nothing. His silence would be more redeeming if he actually didn't know any better.

At the bare minimum he could have done as Oprah did, he could have left that "Church" - but he did not. For you to lend any credence to him today claiming that he had no idea of the type of man Wright was - the man in front of whose pulpit he sat as he preached Crazy™ for twenty years, who supposedly "led him to Christ", who officiated his marriage to his wife, who baptized his children - is jaw-dropping (to say the very least).

To further illustrate - look to your left. This is a picture of one of the people competing in the Republican Primaries for the IN-2 seat in Congress. And yes, the idiot is actually speaking at a Neo-Nazi convention celebrating Hitler's birthday about two weeks ago. According to him, he doesn't actually believe as they believe - he just went there to "witness" to them.

I doubt that would fly with you. It doesn't fly with me. Which is why Obama's new found distaste for the content of Wright's sermons or his protests (true or not) that they do not reflect his beliefs do not fly with me - no matter how often he chants his apparently hypnotic "Hope & Change™" mantra.

the mentor/follower relationship between Jeremiah and Barack-

“I constantly remember Rev. Wright as the shepherd who guided me to my commitment to Christ one Sunday morning at Trinity. I often consider, as I work in the Senate how he lives his life-a life of service to Trinity, Chicago and the nation; his activism on behalf of causes that few would champion and his dogged commitment to the first principles of love for God and fellow man. And in my personal walk, I seek daily to imitate his faith."

He bought the land for the manse a few years ago, then sold it to his living trust.

Trinity United is forking over $1.6MM to build the church, and took out an additional $10MM credit line for undisclosed purposes. (furniture?)

Obama, you've been HAD! Not exactly the best qualification for negotiating on behalf of the US.

BHO do to get past this?...

I mean, if he declares he's leaving his church, denouncing the church itself, is that what's needed?

" Got to love the Lord for making things like that."
Morally Compromised

There are some that will, mistakenly in my opinion, equate Obama and his beliefs with the beliefs of Rev Wright. There are others who will wake up and realize that Obama's claim of superior judgement has been destroyed by his association with an obvious crackpot. Of course, there is plenty of time until Novmember and Obama is smart enough, charming enough and charismatic enough to rebuild his reputation, but I think it will be very difficult.

speech will be enough...and move on.

Obviously, for us, it isn't enough...and this will be the problem in the future......sooner or later, there has to be a end point, and thundering away at this might actually work in a negative way...

" Got to love the Lord for making things like that."

pretty sure BO agrees with Wright that we had 911 coming. Just look at his foreign policy proposals for the ME.

CongressCritter™: Never have so few felt like they were owed so much by so many for so little.

get up and walk out, but he didn't. He and his family sat in that church and listened to this filth for over 20 years. He was conveniently not at church on the days the controversial comments were made, so either he's not the regular churchgoer he claims to be and he's lying about his church faithfulness that he was so proud of early in his campaign when he was touting his Christianity or he knows exactly who this man is and what he represents.

Hillary, the media, everyone begged Obama to denounce Wright and he just wouldn't do it - until he realized his gig was up.

So yes, I have to say I agree with your comments because I'm not buying it and because Obama has surrounded himself with people who believe what you typed above. Even his wife has never been proud to be American before Obama decided to run for President. "I didn't know" only goes so far.

And the important thing is it focuses on Obama's judgment and why it is important to consider what this tells us about his policy views and judgments.

BARACK OBAMA

It Turns Out the Critics Knew Wright Better Than Obama Did

In the absence of a long and productive legislative career, Barack Obama has argued that his decisive advantage over his rivals is not experience, but judgment.

Back on March 18, Obama declared that we were being unfair in concluding Jeremiah Wright was "a crank or a demagogue" because we didn't know him the way Obama did. We were reaching that conclusion based on "snippets" and "soundbites," whereas he could take the full assessment based on a close relationship of 20 years or so.

He was, he assured us, in a better position to make a better judgment.

Today, Obama tells us, he doesn't really know Jeremiah Wright at all.

And now, it seems, we're in better position to make a judgment about Barack Obama.

UPDATE: Paraphrasing a reader's suggestion, foreseeing an Oval Office address near the end of Obama's first term: "The Prime Minister Ahmadinejad who ordered the nuclear strike on Tel Aviv yesterday... is not the same man I met in Tehran at our summit back in 2009."

ANOTHER UPDATE: Mary Katherine Ham reports that someone is asking poll questions about Wright in North Carolina.
