...And The Poor Taste of Democratic Politicians Continues Its Downward Spiral
In other news, the Stock Market Snaps Back Nicely

A gentleman who works for me, who is known for intelligence and assiduity if not for taste, points out the following historical curiosity:
John F. Kennedy canoodled none other than Marilyn Monroe, thus earning the starstruck admiration of every man of power and might in the nation.
But Bill Clinton was forced to be satisfied with Paula Jones.
Now Eliot Spitzer, aka Elliot Ness, Mr. Clean, and the man who would clean up Albany, is reduced to paying for it.
Meanwhile, the hope for a Spitzer resignation (with a minor assist from the announcement of coordinated liquidity enhancements by the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank) has the New York stock market up well over 2% this morning.
Happy Spitzmas, liberals!

It's one of the reasons the impeachment didn't go through. And now we have to deal with his wife.
Socialism doesn't work. It looks nice on paper, but it's been tried and it's failed miserably every time (usually accompanied by widespread death and suffering).

These are poisonous snakes. They are to be eradicated when and where we find them, lest they muster up enough energy to bite our ankles with their last gasping breath.
So, out with that snake!
And in response to the last piece of your tag line: STILL with Fred!

newred, personally I don't give a farthing about political calculations in this thing.
He has to go - it's a necessary act of social (and political) hygiene....
The NYGOP has nothing. Absolutely nothing. Right now they need something positive to run on - meaning something that isn't "we'll stop Spitzer." This whole situation gives the NY GOP the chance to reclaim a "reformer" mantle and put themselves on a footing to be the guys to clean up the government for real (rather than just talk about it and bully law-abiding business ala Spitzer).
This also puts Democrats in an awful position. No impeachment can happen without the Democrats - they control the Assembly and in total number of Legislature seats held have a large majority. But, with the GOP calling for Spitzer's ouster the Democrats will have to either go along and "pull a Nixon" (basically tell Spitzer that they cannot or will not save him), or they have to take the politically damaging position that they will stand by the governor if he chooses to stay in office.
Either way, the GOP gets something to run on going into some tough November elections - they can run on a platform that real change and real reform needs to happen to prevent this sort of thing from happening, or they can run against a Democratic party that is willing to support a man who has admitted to breaking the law by paying a prostitute.
All of that is in addition to the simple point -Spitzer is a potent politician - if we let him get out of this one then he will come back to haunt us again and again. If he doesn't recover enough to run for re-election he can just move on (possibly into a position in a Democrat White House) and re-emerge later to run for something else. We need to mark him with this permanently - make his future endeavors come with the tag "the former governor who was forced to resign after being linked to a prostitution ring." As the announcer would say in the Mortal Kombat video game: "Finish Him."
I want him out of Albany, and the earth salted over. And plenty of other people feel the same way.
Besides, not many people could be as effective as Spitzer at powering Democratic gains in NYS. Did you see the special election in NY-48 (iirc), north of Syracuse?
where the emperor, er, held court.
BTW, blackhedd, I totally agree that Spitzer is the poster boy for prosecutorial overreach.

Sex or not, the details of alleged improprieties are coming forth. Money, traced through his account a numerous shell corporations and then ending up in the hands of the provider.
Using state transportation and state provided body guards while having a tryst.
Income taxes not paid on that alleged money.

Shouldn't that be Monica Lewinsky instead of Paula Jones?
Are you insinuating that Republicans like Vitter, Craig, and Foley have good taste?
I don't think this is a partisan issue.
This must be why the New York TImes can write an entire article on the topic and omit the fact that Spitzer is a ....DEMOCRAT!!!(Whoops, was that too partisan?)
"I believe we must adjourn this meeting to some other place." - The last recorded words of Adam Smith.
I'm not defending the NYT, just observing that both sides of the aisle have had their sghare of seedy sex scandals lately. It's pretty hard for either side to claim any moral high ground here.
"I believe we must adjourn this meeting to some other place." - The last recorded words of Adam Smith.
We boot our cretins, Dems defend theirs even if it means lying about what is an impeachable offense or what perjury is.
of ports of call for the traveling penis, one with potentially fascinating financial arrangments.
McGreevey gave a top security post to his inamorato, who fled the country.
The GOP trio you cite simply do not have the panache:
Vitter-routine John
Craig- misdemeanor
Foley- to date, not even an indictment. If he had been straight hitting on chicks once they became of age, no one would have batted an eye.
When it comes to sex, the GOP is the pedestrian party.
Soliciting gay sex in the bathroom is "pedestrian"?
Cyber stalking underage boys that work for you is "pedestrian"?
What about Bob Allen, who offered $20 to perform oral sex on a man in a bathroom (according to him, he just did it because he was intimidated), is that "pedestrian" as well?
I think you and I have a different idea of what that word means.
Again, Sptizy is a hypocritical sleaze who deserves all the derision he's getting. But for Repubs to act like this is a Democrat problem suggests a bit of selective amnesia.
Its not a news flash to anyone here that there have been and I'm sure still are plenty of scumbags on the R side of the aisle.
But this is a conservative website and Spitzer is the epitome of the East Coast know-it-all, control your life, anti-capitalist liberals. And now he is totally imploding. So go away and let us enjoy it.
We had to suffer through plenty with Craig and Foley. Now its our turn to enjoy a little schadenfraude. If that's too petty for you, I think there's a lot of other websites out there.
First Clinton, then McGreevey and now Spitzer.
And yes, it is quite pedestrian to seek sex in toilets. Or going en flagrante with hookers in a no-tell motel. (BTW, Craig never pleaded guilty to seeking sex in toilets. He pleaded guilty to creating a disturbance in a public place)
Foley went after young men who were of age. Immoral, yes, but legal.
And how's that case with Deval Patrick's aide going again?
But let me not divert you from the damage control assignment.
The triple pillar of the world, transformed into a strumpet's fool! - Antony and Cleopatra
I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree about what is "pedestrian" behavior in a public toilet.
But you're getting me wrong. I'm enjoying this as much as anyone. This story has everything, $5,000/hr hookers imported from NYC, secret trysts in a DC landmark (not 3 blocks from my office)...and that it was all orchestrated by Mr. Law and Order himself is just the cherry on top.
His arrogance is without limits, and his resignation can't come soon enough.

Why is the NYGOP pushing for immediate resignation and/or possible impeachment? Keeping a thoroughly diminished Spitzer in office would help the GOP retain the state senate, congressional seats, and assist in winning back the governorship in 2010. The Lt. Governor is well liked by Democrats AND Republicans and pushing him to the top spot might actually strengthen the NY Democratic party. Shouldn't we at least take a moment to reconsider this "OUT NOW!" strategy? The short-term benefits could leave us with long-term losses.
