Cheney Has A Blood Clot

A blood clot was discovered in Vice President Dick Cheney's left leg Monday. Cheney visited his doctor after feeling minor discomfort in his calf. An ultrasound showed the blood clot - a deep venous thrombosis - in his left lower leg.

This is a serious medical condition that could be fatal if left untreated:

Blood clots that form deep in the legs can become killers if they break off and float into the lungs. This is called a pulmonary embolism. Deep vein thrombosis strikes an estimated 2 million Americans each year, killing 60,000.

The good news is that the condition, when treated properly constitutes a relatively small threat. Vice President Cheney will be treated with blood-thinning medication for several months. The vice president may not be going on another nine-day trip that requires 65 hours of flying any time soon. Other than that Cheney should be fine.

The Vice President returned from the doctor's office and continued his work day. His spokesperson says he feels fine and will maintain his regular schedule.

This isn't an unpredented situation. President Richard Nixon also suffered from deep-vein thrombosis when he was in office.

...waiting on his "get well soon" card from Bill Maher.

As with the news last week of the VP being the expected target of a suicide bomber, I predicted correctly how the deranged left would react, I once again predict that the reaction to this news will be similar.

After a weekend such as we had, where the left pounced about the lack of tact by Ann C, will Howard Dean come out and demand that his party separate itself from those who actually wish for anyones demise, never mind the demise of a sitting Vice President?

I'm not going to hold my breath.

I WILL give credit to the very very few over there that are wishing him well/saying they don't wish this on anyone reguardless of how they feel about them. I know that may seem to be a shock but there are a few over there that are actually attempting to be decent human beings, thus I give them credit for that.

LEt's all keep Vice President Cheney in our prayers.

David Bloom died of DVT while on assignment in Iraq. Thankfully, it appears that VP Cheney's ailment was caught in time.

The only fact that concerns me is that I bet he was already on blood thinners. Definitely on Aspirin, and perhaps on stronger meds due to his history of a-fib ( I believe he had a history of that ).

Regardless, blood clots are easily treated once caught. They should have him on an exercise program while in flight from now on. If they recur, he may need a IVC (inferior vena cava) filter, which isn't a fun procedure.
