Financial Pressures Force Snow Departure

White House press secretary Tony Snow, who has been undergoing chemotherapy treatment for a recurrence of cancer, will step down from his position as early as next month:

Snow told conservative talk-show host Hugh Hewitt on Thursday "financial reasons" may prevent him for serving the remainder of his boss's presidency.

"I'm not going to be able to go the distance, but that's primarily for financial reasons." Snow said. "I've told people when my money runs out, then I've got to go."

According to the Associated Press, Snow, the father of three children, earns $168,000 as an assistant to the president. He made considerably more as a pundit and syndicated talk-show host on Fox News Radio.

Snow has been a phenomenal press secretary. We wish him all the best.

Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie' until you can find a rock.

despite protestations to the contrary, this is not about money.
My heart goes out to him. He is facing tough decisions and few good choices.
He has been one of my favorite people in the pubolic square for many years. His wit, integrity and eloquence has been wonderful.
God speed, Tony Snow.

And in his predicament it's exactly the one that I would have taken. It's a very rational choice and I'm glad he did it. Good luck and godspeed, Tony.

And a tough, tough man as well.

best of luck Tony, my prayers are with you.

You will be sorely missed, you did a fantastic job!!!

I will miss him.

I agree with the comments that he does his job really, really well.

If TS had been there to take over from ari - is there any doubt the situation would be radically different for the better? I think not.

This hurts, bad.

God bless Tony, and I pray that there isnt something else more wrong which could be leading to this resignation.

When Tony first took the job, I remember he said one of his preconditions was that he would be involved in policy discussions. If so, then during the whole immigration kerfuffle my thinking was (1a) either Tony WAS involved, and agreed with the administration's take -- in which case he's not just flaking for an administration that thinks 80% of the Republican grassroots are xenophobic vigilante racists, but thinks that way himself, or (1b) he was involved but was on the losing side in the internal disuccsions, or (2) he WASN'T involved at all.

I think Tony, unlike the rest of the White House denizens of the WSJ/OpenBordersLobby cocoon, is too well-grounded for (1a) -- so it must have been (1b) or (2). I can't imagine how he felt, saying the things he had to say, while battling the return of his cancer.

If I was in his position, I'd be thinking: "I'm dealing with a life-threatening disease, and beyond that the next few years are my last chance to be a Dad to my kids before they leave for college -- and I'm spending 60+ hours a week in this building dealing with the likes of Helen Thomas and other partisan wolves, while flaking for policies I don't agree with? I've got better things to do with my life -- no matter how much time I do or don't have left."

and he was a big pro illegal immigration guy back then, so I give him the benefit of the doubt, he is genuine, and genuinely wrong and stupid.
