Block Nancy's Earmark

It's time to get active people. Here's the deal.
The Senate is considering the Water Resources Development Act of 2007. In it, there is an earmark benefiting Nancy Pelosi (ยง 5054 of H.R. 1495). The earmark would redevelop part of San Francisco's waterfront. Within 5,400 feet and 9,000 feet of the area Nancy would have redeveloped, she owns properties with rental income around $3 million.
and ask for your Senator's office. Tell your Senator you want to make sure Nancy's earmark is permanently blocked.
Kill Nancy's earmark.
They are:
1301 Sansome LLC
Pelosi Real Estate Partnership
Rent Income: $1 million (2005)
945 Battery LLC
Pelosi Real Estate Partnership
Rental Income: $1 million (2005)
901 Battery LLC
Pelosi Real Estate Partnership
Rental Income: $15,000 (2005)
45 Beiden Place
Pelosi Real Estate Asset
Rental Incone: $1 million (2005)
Get on the phone. Call 202-224-3121 and ask for your Representative's office. Tell your Representative you are opposed to Section 5054 of H.R. 1495 and want it struck at Conference. Tell your Representative to kill Nancy's earmark.
Call 202-224-3121 and ask for your Senator's office. Tell your Senator you want to make sure Nancy's earmark is permanently blocked.

I know liberals are stupid, but come on. Why wouldn't they want their city to be a hub for cruise ships?
Evil prevails only when good men do nothing.
First, the run of the mill Lefty hates anything that makes money and that "rich white people" enjoy. Second, the West Coast and the Alaska trade is under the Jones Act which requires that trade between two US ports be on an American bottom using an American crew. The cruise ships aren't American bottoms and don't have American crews; you don't want to think about what a Mexico or Alaska cruise would cost if they did. So, the West Coast unions hate cruise ships. This is the reason almost all Alaska cruises originate in Vancouver rather than Seattle. The SEA politicos would rather forego the revenue from 1.5 million passengers/yr. transiting SEA to board an Alaska cruise than cross the maritime unions.
We deal with it here every year; the Greenies and the unions are constantly looking for a way to regulate and tax the cruise ships out of this market.

Are we sure that this earmark will actually be a benefit to properties that probably can't even see the waterfront?
Socialism doesn't work. It looks nice on paper, but it's been tried and it's failed miserably every time (usually accompanied by widespread death and suffering).
Proud member of the V.R.W.C.
Here's what I find:
H.R.1495
Water Resources Development Act of 2007 (Engrossed as Agreed to or Passed by House--Section 5054
(a) Area to Be Declared Nonnavigable... etc...
(b) Northern Embarcadero South of Bryant Street...(therefollows a description of area)
(c) Requirement That Area Be Improved...
(d) Expiration Date...(if not improved in 20 years, nonnavigability expires)
I didn't see where there was an allocation of money, but if there is, I definitely prefer clean legislation over pork spending.
SEC. 5054. RILEY CREEK RECREATION AREA, IDAHO.
The Secretary is authorized to carry out the Riley Creek Recreation Area Operation Plan of the Albeni Falls Management Plan, dated October 2001, for the Riley Creek Recreation Area, Albeni Falls Dam, Bonner County, Idaho.
There are different versions as the bill is processed. We have to look at the most current:

Section 5054 previously referred to something else.
places control of those waters in state and local hands rather than federal hands. All navigable waters are under federal control absent some specific provision to the contrary. That means the Corps of Engineers could permit a dock on navigable waters without a "by your leave" from the State of CA or SFO.

I appreciate your comments, they clarified this issue for me. You must be deep into this (excuse the pun).
If you live in Alaska, the Jones Act and the interaction of State and federal jurisdiction over waters come with the air you breathe.
Alaska operates one of the larger American bottom fleets in our Alaska Marine Highway System, the ferries that link us with Prince Rupert, BC and Bellingham, WA. I've spent lots of quality time accross bargaining tables and in arbitrations and labor board hearings with my maritime union friends.

As in STARKIST?!
The reason the cruise ship pier is opposed by the left in San Francisco is that these ships "pollute". They have ballast water that brings in "non-native species".
Also, in their dire times of Gorebal Warming, it is unacceptable that San Francisco should allow elitist cruise ship companies to build berths for ships full of rich white people who are wasting energy.
I am not kidding. The same with the proposed recreation complex at the waterfront. There would have been a kayaking area. But since immigrants, the homeless and people of color don't kayak, it was elitist.
I am not kidding. Read the local press for fun and amusement.
What if the AARP gets its back up and starts lobbying for cruise ship terminals in San Francisco? Or maybe gays start pushing for Disney gay wedding cruises based there. The Dem constituency infighting could get nasty.
The way to get the kayaks in is to buld an Eskimo--I mean, Inuit--Heritage Center/Casino, maybe teach some local Chinatown residents to kayak and declare them members of the Southern Inuit Tribe. They could charge tourists to watch them hunt down those pesky seals that lay around the docks all day.
the West Coast, Hawaii, and the Pacific Territories will fall worshipfully at you feet - if you're not dead at the hands of a union assassin - these are among the baddest of the bad boys of organized labor. These ain't wuss public employee unions that are more concerned about socialism than wages, hours, and terms and conditions; these are people who will kill you for getting in their way.
There was a reason the West Coast longshore strike was about whether the union or the company controlled the dock clerk; he's the one who knows which container is worth stealing.

are also the reason there is no longer a viable Port of San Francisco. The local union refused to handle containerized cargo, so it all went to Oakland. Oakland's now the 4th largest port in the country, while SF gets a couple of cruise ships and very little cargo.
The longshoremen in Oakland can be a lefty bunch. They will have a slight problem on their hands when those new upgraded ports in Mexico come online, and half of China's exports dock there instead of US ports. Perhaps they can commiserate with the unemployed US truck drivers that have been replaced with Mexican long-distance rigs.
No pesky unions there.
From a lefty site:
http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/horsesmouth/2007/05/pelosi.php
They make two points:
1) The City of SF requested this at the Port of SF's behest.
2) Pelosi's property is "at least a mile" away.
Can anyone verify/refute?

I work here in SF. There have many proposed developments along the waterfront here. They have all been rejected by the leftist "government" of this city. The usual "activists" have derailed every attempt to do something with rotting piers and empty berths.
Mills tried to develop a major recreation/retail project on some old piers. It was shot down because it was "elitist" and had "too much business".
The lefties here are trying as hard as they can to kill a proposed cruise ship pier.
There is absolutely NO NEED for government money to develop San Francisco's waterfront. The locals didn't want private money, so they have no right to public money.
