Can't the leadership of this Congress do ANYTHING right?

Speaker Pelosi? Speaker Pelosi!?

The 110th Congress's leadership is apparently so inept that a simple resolution "Calling for the immediate and unconditional release of British marines and sailors held captive by Iran" can't even get a floor vote.

The "resolved" is as follows, nothing more, nothing less:

Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the House of Representatives--

(1) condemns the Islamic Republic of Iran for the seizure of 15 British marines and sailors and demands their unconditional release; and

(2) calls on the United Nations Security Council to condemn this seizure and explore new sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran, including the restriction of the supply of gasoline, to prevent further Iranian hostile action, deny Iran's ability to militarize the Persian Gulf, and enforce Iran's nonproliferation commitments.

It's been in the offing for three days - so, what is it that's keeping this resolution from seeing the light of day?

Read on.

Is this perhaps a bone being tossed by Nancy Pelosi to her anti-war constituency? After all, Iran is simply a misunderstood nation who would never do such things as kidnap allied troops or work to acquire nukes if America's and GWB's horrible aggression didn't force them into it - right?

Here's a letter from Rep. Eric Cantor to Ms. Pelosi, regarding the resolution:

Dear Madam Speaker:

Fifteen kidnapped British marines and sailors recently became the latest victims of a systematic Iranian campaign of terror and international defiance. The illegal seizure of the British forces is a signal that Iran views us as powerless to prevent it from realizing its aggressive ambitions.

For the sake of our standing in the world, our allies and most importantly the 15 British personnel and their families, I urge you to bring H. Res. 267 to the floor today before we adjourn. The resolution calls for the immediate and unconditional release of the British marines and sailors. It would also call on the U.N. Security Council to not only condemn the seizure, but to explore harsher sanctions to counter the growing Iranian threat.

With kind regards, I am
Sincerely,

Eric Cantor
Member of Congress

So how about it, Ms. Pelosi? Can we say Iran was wrong already - or do we have to keep on waiting for our own Congress to acknowledge that such acts as the abduction and holding captive of our allies are actually wrong?

Hmm?

some of the leadership that the R congress had. We complain about it, but we did get a lot of stuff done - maybe not all I would have liked to get (especially the 109th). It's a lot easier to be disciplined and obstructionist in the minority than it is to get stuff done as a majority.

.....give me the impression that we really have Karl Marx, Lenin, and Trotsky in charge down in DC. Wait till Hillary gets there, fully in charge, and each and every one of us who visit, lgf, freerepublic, powerline, and of course redstate, get a visit from Hillary's new 'Thoughtcontrol Police'.
Do we need any more reason to vote 'R' next time.

are feeling, right about now. Thanks alot.

Didn't we just have the Senate discussing something that the Democrats proposed, about President Bush had to get permission from the Democrats to protect the US against Iran? Could the refusal to do such a mild thing as a condemming resolution, be an effort to surrender without a fight?

...if this is the same country today that threw King George's tea overboard in Boston Harbor, that stood eyeball to eyeball with the world's greatest military at Concord, and at Yorktown, that went toe to toe for two more years with the same foe fourty years later because they were impressing American seamen into his majesty's service, that sent the Marines into Tripoli because some of the inhabitants were demanding tribute from American Merchantmen, that decided the slaughter of some few dozen Americans at a place called the Alamo was a reason to teach Mexico a lesson they soon wouldn't forget, that shed the blood of over six hundred thousand of its citizens over two things called slavery and secession, that got so upset over the explosion of one of its battleships in that nation's territorial waters, that it permanently relegated the once mighty Spanish Empire to the status of a bananna republic, whose enormous contributions of both men and arms turned the stalemate in the trenches of Flanders and Belleau Wood, into a temporary victory for freedom and Democracy, the same nation that stood astride and fought a TWO OCEAN WAR against two of the most determined, best trained, best equipped foes we have ever met in battle, while at the same time supplying our allies with the bread, the butter, petroleum products, bullets, ships, tanks and planes that they needed to carry on their end of the fight, the same nation that went eyeball to eyeball with the Soviet Union until they stood on the precipice of bankruptcy and BLINKED.
Is the Democratic leadership determined to make this nation the diplomatic and military equivalent of Spain or France?
Are they determined to demonstrate to us just how easy it was for the Roman Empire to fall?
Have we met the barbarians at the Gate? Have we taken their offerings of marijuana, cocaine, and heroin and surrendered this nation and its legacy to their fleeting pleasures?

in two or three generations, no, we are not the same Country.
