I'm just glad it was you first so I had something to land on ;)

...that comb-over starts to look a little more attractive.

You've wandered the vast wastelands of liberal wonderland long enough, Carl. Welcome to reality.

On how long it takes for the left-wing long knives to come out, and Senator Levin issues a "clarification" and then gives an "impassioned" plea on the floor of the Senate against the War.

This isn't a call for military action in Syria, it's to preempt any military action in Iran. He's trying to force the Administration to explain why there is sabre-rattling with respect to Iran, but not Syria and other countries.

The other thing Levin did today was announce his plan to remove combat troops by 2008 and limit our role to training and logistics:

http://onthehillblog.blogspot.com/2007/02/breaking-armed-services-chairm...

He's setting up the argument that, if we keep things like they are, we must take more aggressive actions to keep weapons and fighters from coming to Iraq. But to do that, we can't just attack Iran, we also have to attack Syria and "other Sunni nations" where these things are coming from at the same time.

Since there is virtually no one who would advocate widening the war to include an uncertain number of additional countries and start an all-out regional war, he is building the argument that his solution is the most practical and viable. Instead of invading all the countries surrounding Iraq, we should remove our combat troops. Keep enough defensively positioned, well-protected trainers and logistic troops to give Iraq forces the help they need, and any talk of invading Iraq or Syria because of US troop deaths becomes much less of an issue.

then it's stupider than just leaving. Sure, let's pull out the fighters, leave a small cadre of "trainers" ("well-protected" by whom? Who knows...) scattered about the country-side so they can be picked-up one at a time (rather than in a big bunch, I suppose) like so many sacks of potatoes and then sit-back and watch as Iraq consumes itself.

Yep, that's a great idea.

I mean, if we leave wholesale then at least US deaths in the short-term become practically nil and the net result of keeping "trainers" alone in country (a regional war to divy-up what's left of Iraq) is the same as Levin's "solution" anyway - leaving us the same long-term Armegeddon without the daily videotaped beheadings of our captured "trainers".

The point from our side is that Levin has neatly destroyed, with this single exchange, not less than 3 lefty Talking Points™ today - and that is going to be a gift that will keep on giving as the debate on this issue, and the surge, continue.

So libs, how's that Congressional Resolution to end The War™ coming along?

He's trying to force the Administration to explain why there is sabre-rattling with respect to Iran, but not Syria and other countries.

I'll explain it for him in two words: nuclear weapons.

Nice, snazzy new comment editing tools, by the way, editors. Thanks.

http://jasperblog.wordpress.com/

That's it all right. Syria is not out in the world community bragging about building nuclear capabilities. Syria is also not running around waving it's symbolic phallus trying to prove they're THE power in the region.

Iran has grand plans for a kind of regional empire with them at the center of it. Syria is small potatoes - they're looking only at Lebanon. And trying to destabilize Iraq on the side just to play nice with others in the region (and in no small part to keep us too occupied to do anything major to topple the Assad regime).

It's dueling combovers in this bit of tape.

Fantastic!!!

That is pretty vicious.

Your know, Rudy use to have an awesome one, too.

Yes, but Rudy saw the light and took the path of Dignity. Levin can't seem to help himself in this department.

...like he is making our case for massive troop buildup in Iraq, using the country as a central staging area for a greater middle east purge. Did he suddenly turn Republican? I thought Levin wanted us out of the region. Now I'm confused.:)

Interesting that just yesterday I received an email from Carl Levin on behalf of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee with the following excerpt:

"...That's why a number of us are drafting binding legislation which would modify the broad authority Congress gave the president four years ago to execute the war in Iraq. Our proposal is based on the recommendations of the Iraq Study Group and would change our mission from one of combat to a limited one that supports the efforts of the Iraqis to govern and secure themselves. Our proposal would keep us out of an Iraqi civil war, and limit our mission to training and logistics support of the Iraqi military, to counterterrorism, and to helping the Iraqis secure their international borders. We would set a goal of March of 2008 for the removal of all our combat troops...."

Perhaps his recent remarks about Syria and Iran fall under the category of helping the Iraqis secure their international borders.

Replace Carl Levin, with Mark Levin?
