It is no secret that public discourse in this country has become very shrill. Blogs on the left regularly feature vulgar diatribes against the right. Some on the right do the same. Keith Olbermann tells the President to "shut the hell up" on his television program. The New York Times publicly reveals the name of a CIA agent who did the dirty work of interrogating captured Al Qaeda operatives. The left says, "So, the right did it to Valerie Plame," treating as morally equivalent the disclosure of the spy no longer spying and the disclosure of one of the men Al Qaeda would love to behead.

While Congress has also descended into a more shrill style, until yesterday it had not crossed one line of civility that never should be crossed on either side.

David Addington is the Vice President's Chief of Staff. Yesterday, he testified before Congress.

During the course of the hearing, Congressman and Obama Superdelegate William Delahunt (MA-10) asked Mr. Addington about water boarding. Mr. Addington responded that he would not go into details because Al Qaeda is probably watching.

Congressman Delahunt's response was, "I'm glad they finally have a chance to see you."

Mr. Delahunt now denies he meant what he said. But what he clearly said was "I'm glad they finally have a chance to see you." Al Qaeda now knows the face of one of the men who relentlessly pursues its henchmen and deals with their interrogations. Mr. Addington volunteered for public service, not a death sentence with Congressional encouragement. Mr. Delahunt is both a vile liar and a cowardly lion willing to roar down at Mr. Addington while encouraging terrorists to do his dirty work in a war he has been ineffective at stopping.

The left, while attacking Charlie Black for stating the obvious -- that a terrorist incident helps the GOP politically because they are seen as more competent in the national security arena -- is defending this degradation of congressional discourse and vile swipe at Mr. Addington.

This discourse — a member of Congress glad Al Qaeda has a face it can pursue — is beneath the dignity of the Congress and beneath the dignity of civil discourse in this country.

If you do not call your Congressman today and demand the House of Representatives, at the very *least*, censure Congressman Delahunt, well damn us all. We have no right to carry on our fight.

The number is 202-224-3121 and Congressman Delahunt's email address is william.delahunt@mail.house.gov.

And some intrepid reporter should ask Mr. Obama what he thinks of this.  After all, Mr. Delahunt was one of Mr. Obama's early supporters and is now an Obama superdelegate. Of course, you can ask Barack Obama yourself at (866) 675-2008.

When you call your Congressman, you should make sure he knows an apology from Mr. Delahunt will not suffice. Delahunt clearly is lying about and denying his statement. "I'm sorry" would just be more of the same.

where Major Andre met his end. Just thought you may like to know that.

On second thought, local folklore has it Andre was a pleasant fellow and often a supper guest before all that spy stuff. Retrospectively, it may not be the correct spot. He was actually liked at one point by his fellow Huguenots who mostly inhabited the area. I am not sure these Democrats were ever really liked by anyone.

I've been calling them traitors for ever and will continue doing so forever. This Delahunt makes me sicker than sick.

My understanding is Delahunt did not even belong at that hearing. He was initially denied a chance to speak, then did so when those objecting stepped out of the room.

How much more dishonest can this Congress get; letting an obvious left wing loon stoke the base while gaining plausible deniability?

The Democrat response will predictable; BO will condemn it then snicker. The remainder will deny Delahunt's intent. American's will largely demur and look for their mortgage bailout checks.

We all know that AQ is searching for softer targets. God forbid they find a way to go after elected officials and public servants such as Addison. I am curious what Democrats will say when those AQ perpetrators come across a border they refuse to secure and use this type of knowledge for selecting targets? Think they will snicker then?

To make a stand on this and refuse to tolerate it.

Fight On!

Unfortunately our Congress does not staff their offices until 9:00am. I suppose they believe those of us who work much longer hours are quaint.

What is truly unfortunate is an electorate that I have largely lost faith in will demur. For the life of me, I can not determine what gets them off the couch anymore besides a new HDTV or "free" healthcare and other sundry promises. I have children who know more about the Constitution and our government then most adults. That is inexcusable.

Every day this Congress and SCOTUS steal our liberty yet the majority currently flocks to change? I say educate yourself and be careful what you wish for. Liberty lost is seldom regained.

SO glad that I was polite with the young man who answered the call. Turns out he went to high school with my own son in this county! He hadn't seen the video and said that I was the first person who had brought it to his attention. Maybe he'll go watch it now that he knows about it. And maybe since I was polite about it he will take it more seriously.

We can't let it go.

Actually Congresswoman; she's from NY of course.

The 12 year old answering the issue (after passing the phone around the office) had no idea what I was talking about.

They took my name and number and said they will call me back with a response. I shant wait for the phone to ring. But they should know, their credibility with me is on the line.

Marcus Traianus,

Are you in NYC? If so, I've thrown around the idea to Erick, Jeff Emanuel, and a few others of a RS get together sometime in the next month in NYC. If anyone else is interested, let me know by emailing me via my personal contact form here on RS.

On topic, I called Delahunt's office a few minutes ago to leave a message and his mailbox was full. I presume we RS people had something to do with that...way to go!

I'm no lefty, but I also realize that such afore-mentioned shrillness exists because everyone is so HYPER-SENSITIVE, on both sides.

The congressman clearly said what he said, but he was also clearly making a lame attempt at sarcasm. I think we can make hay over more substantial things than a(n albeit freudian) slip of rhetoric.

Oh, and fair warning: the Contributors and Directors of this site are infuriated by this. And we don't actually get infuriated all that easily.

Have at thee, master congressman, for poor judgment choosing when to finally speak honestly *heh*, and even poorer cover-up/denial skills.

*Really?* In the middle of a hearing you just up and decide to say you're "glad to see him?"

No doubt if he had the power to *Blam* congressman, you'd be one of Mr. Lane's first targets.;)

...refers solely to the fairly cheesy "sound effect" associated with my habit of [moderating the comments section] / [acting like a bullying, fascistic, petulant chickenhawk neo-con by banning anybody who disagrees with me] (depends on who you ask, obviously); I don't sink to Delahunt's level by wishing physical ill on my political opponents.

Shoulda thought about the troll-bait factor....

all the time. It is time to step up and call them out.
For 7 years we have put up with all kinds of tripe like this coming from their mouths.
No more.
Me personally, I'm just about ready for a freakin' revolution.
I'm just sick to death of all their nonsense. Sick.Of.It.All!

Just a typical, small town, British-American girl...

That's not true. There was no sarcasm in his voice. You're inputing something into that statement that was not there.

Again, a member of the Massachusetts House delegation stoops to a level of vile stupidity, and seemingly is proud of it. I cannot understand how anyone in Massachusetts can be proud of this behavior, particularly those in Mr. Delahunt's district. This is not the first time for Mr. Delahunt to demonstrate his stupidity, yet he is allowed to continue without any fear from being rejected by the voters. That is a sad commentary for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, but unfortunately, it has become their standard.

after the hearing.

Not real sure writing my congressman would do much good. I might give it a whirl to see what comes back, but I doubt he will do much more than file it in the circular file.

If not, hey, maybe his opponent would like the talking point. :)

by reacting to it; he WANTS a reaction. A constituency that would elect him thinks that what he said was a good, good, thing.

Unless you can actually do something to them, reacting to lefty BS is like peeing your pants in a dark suit; gives you a warm feeling, but nobody notices.

that we can't do anything to him.

That said, having someone ask BHO tomorrow what he thinks of the statement might be a productive endeavor.

My sleeping schedule is all messed up. Worked all night on a project night before last (this), stayed up all day, then fell asleep on the sofa watching TV in the early evening. Can't get back on schedule so here I am at this keyboard at 4 AM ADT.

nothing against your achance, but I never understand why some always try to stamp down on website activism. I have seen gun web site actually chance a company's policies in a matter of hours. Of course it took people to actually complain and research and call advertisers, but the battle was won by dinner.

These things only happen when people get mad and decide to act in concert. Some people just want to type on their computer and that is the limit, that is fine, but as someone who has been a part of successful web based activism, I say "lead, follow, or get out to the way".

Molon Labe!

the key to which is a reasonable expectation of some desired result. This guy is going to revel in calls for his head from the right and get all sorts of attention for it. Why do that for him? Now, if there is a reasonable expectation of getting some motion before the body in play, even if we can't pass it, that may be worthwhile, but that we do by contacting Republicans, not Democrats. Having worked a lot of constituent email, letters, and calls, I assure you that the first thing anybody in politics at any level does is check the party affiliation and the contributor list. If you're a D and the contact is from an R, the most they get, if any response at all, is a perfunctory "Thank you for sharing your concern" letter.

In Vino Veritas

This is not a story the Dems want out there. You say this guy likes making conservatives angry, ok, but this is election time, the Dem Party does not want another weak on terror story out there. Also, as the Directors said, what Delahunt said was over the line and worthy of censure. I do believe even liberal Congressmen are required to be on our side right?

"Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it."

I've got a sinking pit in my stomach, having read this. The congressman is in my prayers. Such a hard heart.

Delahunt should have to face Al Qaeda face to face. Maybe then he would think twice about his sarcastic comments. He might also think twice about questioning any practice we have of interrogating terrorist. I am sure if he were a prisoner of war or a prisoner of Al Qaeda he would be treated much, much worse. The terrorist around the world must be laughing at the US with all the bickering on how and when we should interrogate our prisoners. Terrorist do not have any trouble killing or miming residents of the United States or other countries that they feel inferior. Get a grip Mr. Delahunt!! Maybe we should send you to the terrorist so you can "talk" them out of attacking innocent men, women and children. Just saying you are sorry is not accepted. Of course since he is an Obama lover, he would think the way he does.

...I cannot believe that any person with the minimal intelligence required to get elected to Congress would intentionally suggest the targeting of a high-level executive branch official, even loony liberals from Massachusetts.

I suspect the distinguished gentleman from Massachusetts was trying to insinuate that the executive branch operates with too much secrecy - a common complaint from liberals.

But to think that one of our elected officials wished death upon one of our executive branch members? I cannot imagine that to be true.

I can unequivocally say I will not be running for national office in four years.

Eternally grateful for blogs like Redstate....keeping us informed about things the media deliberately ignores.

I've written to DelaHunt and will contact my Congressmen to demand censure. My letter to him goes as follows:

After having been a democrat for over 35 years, I now am reminded why I have disavowed my 'party' and now vote independently. Your behavior and actions at the Congressional hearing regarding interrogations of our enemy - - the ones who would like to destroy us for further clarification - - was the most shocking unbelievable thing I have seen in many years. I know the Democratic party doesn't really believe we are war, 9/11 withstanding, but I cannot believe you would make a target of an American citizen.

If I had any reservations about which party I would vote for previous to this, they are gone. The Democrats have turned into something I do not recognize and I sadly believe that the 'party of the people' will do and say anything to win the next election; regardless of how badly our wonderful country is damaged.

I'd say you should be ashamed, but I know you aren't... I think the very concept has left the Democratic party members. It's a relative world as they say and anything goes. Your action reflects that.

You stated to Mr. Addington "I'm glad they finally have a chance to see you." Well, the American public finally has a chance to see you as well, and I don't think they will like what they see. I sure don't.

Or those that wish to send an email rather than call, here is a helpful URL:

With it you can get a message to any representative, even if they aren't answering their phone.

"If they were merely incompetent, then at least SOME of their actions would have been to the benefit of the country."

Here is what I wrote to my rep, Dave Weldon:

Dear Sir:

As one of your constituents I am writing today to express my outrage at the actions of your colleague, Mr. Delahunt from Massachusetts. His actions to publicly encourage the enemies of this country to target a civil servant, and to implicitly side with their cause is beyond the pale, and borders on treasonous.

I encourage you to join with your colleagues in vocally calling for the censure of Mr. Delahunt. It is difficult enough to deal with the harsh and shrill rhetoric voiced in opposition of the defense of our country. But a line is crossed when members of Congress are publicly inviting the kidnap and murder of our public servants.

Thank you for your time.

"If they were merely incompetent, then at least SOME of their actions would have been to the benefit of the country."

I used your exact comments to email my representative, Lamar Smith (TX). I also emailed Mr. Delahunt with a very different comment.

I'm an optimistic guy, but I worry about our republic when an elected representative can utter such a vile an seditious comment in the halls of congress.

dhimmi grandstanding will win you special dispensation the next time Al Qaeda tries to hit Capitol Hill, you are mistaken. Perhaps you should show a little more interest in the face of the terrorist who slithers around in a Burkha. Or maybe you already have your own contingency Burkha tucked away in your office.

If you really want to step this up to the level it needs to be, you need a Million American Men marching on Washington DC to communicate our complete lack of tolerance for Delahunt's traitorous actions. American men need to step up and protect their country. We need Delahunt drummed out of Congress. I would be there, I can round up 10 others to be there. The federal government is out of control, and it needs to be reminded who is boss. Do it. Make it happen.
