Picking up where Mr. Hahn left off...
Elections DO matter folks. The lunatics we put in power in 2006 have rather nicely gone and outdone themselves with this little brainstorm... I swear I'm stuck in a really bad episode of the Twilight Zone:
House Democrats responded to President's Bush's call for Congress to lift the moratorium on offshore drilling. This was at an on-camera press conference fed back live.
Among other things, the Democrats called for the government to own refineries so it could better control the flow of the oil supply.
[...]
We (the government) should own the refineries. Then we can control how much gets out into the market.
My head is exploding...they're doing SO well with all the other things they run, aren't they? These are the very same "geniuses" who, just a few days ago blocked efforts to make MORE of them, when they kicked H.R 3089 (No More Excuses Energy Act of 2007) out of Committee. The bill was submitted by Rep Mac Thornberry [TX-13] back in July 2007 [attaboy Mac-thanks for trying, at least].
These people on the left are freaking insane.
Watch as my hair spontaneously combusts below the fold..
All you need is this quote from that whack job, Maxine Waters, to see how much like Hugo Chavez the Democrats want to become:
A report by Fox News, captured in a clip posted on YouTube.com, showed Waters challenging the president of Shell Oil, John Hofmeister, to guarantee the prices consumers pay will go down if the oil companies are allowed to drill wherever they want off of U.S. shores.
Hofmeister replied: "I can guarantee to the American people, because of the inaction of the United States Congress, ever-increasing prices unless the demand comes down."
The Shell exec said paying $5 at the pump "will look like a very low price in the years to come if we are prohibited from finding new reserves, new opportunities to increase supplies."
Waters responded, in part, "And guess what this liberal would be all about. This liberal will be about socializing … uh, um. …"
The congresswoman paused to collect her thoughts.
"Would be about, basically, taking over, and the government running all of your companies. …"
The oil executives responded, according to Fox News, by saying they've seen this before, in Hugo Chavez's Venezuela.
Did I say elections matter yet? This next one coming up is pretty near life and death for a lot of us.

Oil: Drill here. Drill now. Pay less.
They want to take ownership of our healthcare system and now energy production.
If they take them, they will never, ever give them back.
This election matters.
The senate can't even run its socialized restaurant system correctly yet Democrats think they can run the nation's refineries. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/08/AR200806...
There should be a moritorium on socializing anything until the Senate can successfully socialize its own freaking restaurants!!! Unbelievable that Democrats are so stupid!!!!!
The free exchange of ideas inevitably yields both heat and light.
I am taking a tylenol pm and hoping to wake up in a world that makes sense.
Why are Democrats such arrogant, egotistical, greedy, SOBs? Seriously...."don't drill, but if we do we will take care of that. Kind of like we took care of Social Security".
Yes, this has officially put me out for the evening. Good Night.

...who will actually publically denounce socialism and prove that they understand free markets? Anybody? Bueller? Anybody?
In the past, the Che wing of the Dem party has tried to conceal their socialist agenda in the dark recesses of their wish closet. Now they're coming right out and saying in the plainest possible terms that they want absolute government control of education, healthcare, oil production, and the pocketbooks of every U.S. citizen . . . and there's not one peep of protest from a so-called "Blue Dogs"? Not a single Democrat objects to a totalitarian state where freedom is no longer granted by God, but by waving a bureaucratic gavel?
What a pathetic spectacle the Democrat party has become.
--
"We want great men who, when fortune frowns, will not be discouraged." - Colonel Henry Knox
You won't hear that because the Democrat Party has, with this election, completed its purge of blue-collar-type folks and firmly established that the base of the party are urban liberal elites. These folks believe that the free market produces "unfair" results and we just can't have that, ergo, it's government's role to regulate the "free market" to death to make sure nobody is trampled under the bootheel of capitalism. Heck just read any MSM article on the mortgage mess. They think that big banks are the culprit here because they tricked and fooled people into taking out huge mortgages that they couldn't afford. That is what the free market is to them - big evil giant corporations exploiting people. So you will never hear these people honestly extolling the virtues of the market. The only reason they aren't more brazen of their criticism of the free market is because they believe capitalism in America is essentially a cultural phenomenon in this country, akin to Mom and apple pie, that is simply off-limits to bash completely. So they pretend to support the basic idea of capitalism while undermining it at every opportunity with a thousand cuts of regulation. "Oh sure, the free market is great, except for health care... or except for education... or except for oil... or except for this, and that, and the other thing..."
and although they can't tip their hands yet, a few more years of public education indoctrination, along with silencing dissent, will allow them to be more brazen. What troubles me is how the neo-communists have cowed even some Republicans into cowardly silence if not outright cooperation on issues that run the gamut from environmental extremism to illegal immigration to national health care.
You are right. There never will be another Harry Truman to purge the Democratic Party of its Marxist elements. Blue collar Democrats either can jump off the train this time or be responsible for the wreck that will become the United States. They either can be pawns in a game to consolidate the nomenklatura's grip or can leave while it is an option.
I never was a Hillary Clinton fan but I did grow to admire her as she fought an uphill battle against this horrible development. She lost, the once solidly anti-communist Democrats lost, and the United States lost.
If this election goes badly, we will be relegated to pushing back the most egregious violations of the tenents of our democracy--restrictions on free speech, wholesale nationalization of industries, and indoctrination and re-education disguised as anti-hate speech and other warm and fuzzies. We will have to give up free trade and traditional concepts of national defense, although those two great causes have started to fall by the wayside. I bear bad news for social conservatives, as well. You had few friends within the GOP, and a remnant within the Democratic Party. Those are dwindling. To increase your influence, work on the state and local levels to bring about change. The larger issues you championed, some popular with the public, will not be viable for a long, long time.
A dark, dangerous cloud has descended upon the United States. This may be the last chance to pierce it.
This is all well and good and we as conservatives certainly need to preach far and wide to present to all what this really is; Marxism.
But at the same time, how many people are there in America who are praising this statement as the "right path" for America? But in reality who is limiting oil into the market now? The oil companies? The OPEC nations? I know it must be NAFTA; that agreement causes all the problems.
Yet, so long as Congress and the president retain the federal moratoria that forbid most offshore drilling, the 85.9 billion barrels of crude offshore won't be tapped. Found here
Perhaps the Democrat leadership who make these asinine statements are just too ignorant to understand that they already do control the quantity of oil reaching the market.

“You are not only responsible for what you say, but also for what you do not say. ” - Martin Luther
Okay you fiscal conservative types are not going to like this, but this is how I think the GOP should stand up to the Marxist nonsense about oil. Their whole position is that the oil-based economy is nearing an end, and that drilling for oil in these "late stages" only postpones the inevitable. The "real", true, noble, correct way to come up with more energy is with alternative sources - solar, wind, geothermal, etc. More oil means less support for these technologies. The hidden assumption, of course, is that we must choose one over the other: solar panels over oil derricks. I propose that the GOP call their bluff. The GOP should say: "okay, Dems, we will support you in the desire to create more alternative energy sources in this country. We support you fully. In fact we propose to double - no, triple - no, quadruple! - your request for support of alternative energy research. We propose to spend so much money on alternative energy that any scientist with any crackpot idea on how to turn non-fossil-fuels into energy will be funded fully for his project. In return, however, while the research is underway, while the products are being developed for market, to satisfy our CURRENT need for oil - because, after all, TODAY'S world does NOT run on solar or wind power, but on OIL - that's right, filthy dirty stinky OIL - we demand that we expand drilling for OIL." The Dems will of course not support this but the public will realize that the GOP will be calling their bluff. We CAN do both - drill for oil and support more solar panels. I think the GOP has to meet Dems a little bit in the middle on this one because, from my point of view living in a blue state, the idea that we should drill for more oil is just nonsense to them. It's akin to starting a horse carriage manufacturing plant - what's the point?
...it's like an economic version of the push for impeachment. Worthless dead ends. I wish the Democrats would stick with alternative energy instead of government control over oil production. This energy debate has continued to be imbecilic, on both sides.
I say drill away in the gulf and at the same time tax oil companies to fund alternative energy development. Then, by the time the gulf oil rigs are online we'll be way past petroleum and we'll be able to get beaucoup cash from the world for our oil. And sell them the alternative, too. The oil companies can relocate to American then, and recoup their profits.
Only seeking energy independence is for suckers, we need to export the future in the future.
...our secret plan to tax THOSE profits, too, in order to federally finance placards and giant paper mache puppets for protests on the DC mall.
I know better than to let those cats out of the bag.

The situation we are facing vis a vis government confiscation of private property (yes Toto, Exxon is "private" not "public" property) and the destruction of our constitutional form of democracy has been the stated objective of the communist/leftist movement since the early 20th century.
Please do not provide them with the cover afforded by labeling them lunatics.
Lunatic is defined as:
1. an insane person.
2. a person whose actions and manner are marked by extreme eccentricity or recklessness.
3. Law. a person legally declared to be of unsound mind and who therefore is not held capable or responsible before the law.
They know exactly what they hope to achieve and how they are going to do it and that is the complete destruction of the United States of America, capitalism and liberal democracy. If they are aided along the way by so many useful idiots, so much the better, but at its' root, the communist/leftist movement is deadly purposeful.
By dismissing them as lunatics, we are sending the message that they are to be held as harmless and not a serious threat to our way of life. We couldn't be more wrong.
We are in a WAR FOR THE SURVIAL OF OUR FREEDOM with the communist/leftist movement and we are losing battle after battle. The war isn't over or lost yet but it will be if people don't wake up and recognize the existential threat they pose to this country.
Don't dismiss these people or take them lightly. We won't wake up with just a Democrat for a president, we will wake up in a gulag.

While I agree this idea belongs in nutso land, I have to note that there's no reference to any Democrats actually proposing this idea at all. Why doesn't the article list who said it? I hit Google in an attempt to find out, but I don't see a reference anywhere. Anyone know about this?
Formatting sucked. I see it now. What an idiot. Who's surprised, though? Still, don't think it's enough to slam 'em with from one lefty congressman from New York. We've got plenty of valid policy proposals to use against them.
what the rest of them are thinking. Bet you won't see anyone from his side of the aisle disagree with him, much less denounce his sentiment. It ain't just "one lefty congressman from New York".
I tend to think politicians, by and large, are motivated by personal gain and profit. Hence, why the Hildabeast didn't (unfortunately) take the Democrat party down with her. She's a politician, no way she wouldn't leave herself an out, right? Same thing here. Whether or not they believe it, they'd never get away with it, and I don't think any of 'em except a few pinko Congresssmen from NY and CA would be dumb enough to suggest it. Like I said, there's plenty of substantiative things we can fuck 'em up on, this one's pretty weak.
The fact that they are so amoral is what makes them so easy to manipulate. Just because they won't suggest it doesn't mean they wouldn't vote for it. "What are the suckers gonna do, have a revolution?" Don't under estimate them.
By the by, profanity is bad juju 'round these parts, y'know?
RE: "Nah. I'm sitting out. I'm still mad about McCain/Feingold." by tankertodd
I live in Arizona, so I've had to swallow hard more than once to vote for McCain (or, more accurately, against his Democrat opponent), and I'll do it again this November, despite the fact that he infuriates me more often than not. Why, you ask? BECAUSE I CAN - THAT'S WHY.
For most of world history, people labored under the boot of oppressive governments, having no choice but to live with it. They probably wouldn't have been able to even conceive of the type of freedom many of us are obviously taking for granted these days. Had they been given an opportunity to have a say in who governed them - even if it came down to a choice between the lesser of two evils - I seriously doubt they would have passed it up. In fact, I'm pretty certain they would have pounced on it.
Many disgruntled conservatives, on the other hand, seem to have this annoying tendency to take their ball and go home every time they get mad; and they somehow reason that if things get really bad as a result of their inaction - or worse yet - their protest vote for the opposition, then Americans will come to their senses and sweep conservative leaders back into power. I'm here to tell you, that's a risky strategy at best, and it's certainly a risk we can't afford to take this time.
Barack Obama has already indicated that he'll take measures which we know would effectively disarm America, neuter us in the War on Terror, and embolden terrorists worldwide to strike at our homeland. Domestically, he's indicated that he would shove nationalized medicine down our throats, raise taxes substantially, and - oh yeah - there's that Supreme Court thing. I haven't even begun to scratch the surface detailing the misery he would bring down on this nation, and some of these things (like nationalized medicine, for example) are nearly impossible to reverse once they've been enacted. Obama absolutely MUST be stopped at the ballot box. McCain, I'll grant, is a hard pill to swallow, but at least the socialistic agenda I've described above will be slowed (and in a few instances, maybe even halted) on his watch; and we can still band together to oppose McCain - and congress - when we must on issues which are important to us. It has been proven to work in the past (e.g. Comprehensive Immigration Reform).
The rule for this election, as far as I'm concerned, is vote Republican and then fight them when you have to. Voting third party or write-in is, of course, your choice, but understand up front that you are throwing your vote away. Nevertheless, I can stomach that more than I can stomach someone who has decided to just stay home and pout. Too many American warriors died to secure your right to vote for you to just snub their sacrifice by sitting out.
He won't do any of that waffling nonsense if he gets elected, which is looking dreadfully more and more likely every day. Sigh. [Expletive deleted], I'm almost to the point where I'd say let him have these next four years- then the majority of Americans can truly have the government they deserve, and we'll see what they think in 2012.
I'll fight like hell at the local level, and for issues/candidates I feel strongly about, but I'm just not motivated at the national level. I dunno, what d'you think?
Particularly the ones regarding profanity.
You're welcome to try to convince the Directors that you're legit, of course.

& it would not surprise me at all if he were getting funds from his OPEC buddies just like Sen. Abourezk of S.D., an Arab-American did in the ‘70s.
Rahall is a bantamweight who should stick to WV specialties and stay out of serious discussions about serious issues.
Drilling is the only way out of this and the Dems have been saying that it would take a decade to get ANWR oil on line sinc the ‘70s also---Abourezk was interestingly one of those anti-drilling advocates, and used to visit Saudi Arabia for instructions from the Saudi govt---I know because I was in the Embassy in Jidda back then.
The oil executives responded, according to Fox News, by saying they've seen this before, in Hugo Chavez's Venezuela.
The Iraqi government owns all the oil in and under Iraq and that's written into their Constitution.
So, are we still fighting for freedom over there?
vest ownership of oil under American soil in a government bound to share same with states?

The socialists in the early part of the twentieth century can be excused a little because widespread collectivism had not been tried. But now we have about one hundred years of experience to show us that it sucks.
So modern day socialists have no excuse, they are just stupid, evil, or both.

Is this:
Where are the news reports? Where are the discussion of this in the public square?
This is front page news worthy.
This is a big deal.
No one- NO ONE- is putting it anywhere.
My local paper is completely ignoring it. Completely.
This is how the Chavez's of the world get away with a quiet coup:
Their corrupt friends in the media either ignore it, like now, or help sell it.
I submit to you that our media is as corrupt as anything in Venezuela.

The Left is all about envy, they don't want anyone to have more than anyone else. Congress is susceptible to the same envy. They see Hugo Chavez in a mere 9 years, acomplishing something they haven't been able to do in many more than that....completely control a country, stamp out all disent and nationalize oil companies to line his own personal pockets. The Left views this as unfair...they want equal outcome for themselves. They miscalculated in thinking that the American people wouldn't be able to figure out econ 101 and that they would fall for their "BIG OIL IS EEEEEEEEEEVIL" meme.
Better luck next time!
They laughed... you and I heard them... they laughed.
We told them this would happen. We told them this is really what Democrats wanted, and they laughed.
They laughed and now... it's all out there for everyone to see.
Let's see them laugh once the government controls 50% of the economy

He did finish his job.
HUAC charged him to find the communists and communist sympathizers in the government.
He did that, and well.
That HUAC did nothing about it was not his fault. As a Senator, he had no influence in the HOUSE committee.
He didn't even want to make his lists public, saying that there might be some who are not communists or communist sympathizers, but the Democrats wanted the list made public so that they could demonize him further if any turned up NOT being communists.
Turns out.... he was right and the Democrats did nothing except continue to coddle the communists. . . which they do today.

What I meant is that his alcoholic tendencies gave ammunition to the opposition to demonize him...and that led to nothing being done about the communist in our midst...his list is being used today by the Obama Campaign for fund raising.

Oh, I think he could have been wholly dry and with no vices and the Democrats would have done nothing about the Communists.
They coddle them. They bought into the "Uncle Joe" crap. They believed the USSR's claims that rampant death in the USSR was the fault of "bad weather"
They excused the killings of people for 'speaking out against the State', yet were trashing Nixon and the US Military regarding Vietnam.
To this day, even though it has been clearly proven (over and over) that Hiss was a Communist Spy, some liberal rag still supports and defends him.
The left loves to play victim and talk about people being blacklisted for being 'accused' of being a Communist.... yet Chambers really WAS blacklisted.... not because he outed himself as a spy, but because he was the one who provided evidence against Hiss (who had often been invited to 'ivy league' colleges to speak.)
The DNC has never stopped coddling Communists.

What we have is pure naked greed. Democrats seek office solely for the purpose of robbing the populace. It has been that way for nearly 80 years now.
Does anyone doubt that that sole thought in a Maxine Waters or a William Jefferson's head is that if we took over these companies I could put a relative in charge and get kickbacks the like god had never seen ? That when a Barney frank looks at it he thinks ahh hah I can force an entire industry to become my voters. Chris Dodd thinks well how many points is that going to take off my gas bills.
Everywhere this crap is tried it results in a wasteland. Yet still they are reelected and still they put forth this utter garbage.
