FBI Looking Into Calvert. Do We Really Want Calvert *AND* Lewis On Appropriations?

ImageI deeply appreciate Congressman Calvert stopping by to respond to my post.

And I deeply appreciate the concern a number of you have about going after our own. But I have two questions, one for the Congressman and one for the rest of you.

First, Congressman Calvert, do you think this helps the image that Republicans are not corrupt:

The FBI is examining the personal financial records of House Appropriations Chairman Jerry Lewis, the California Republican’s wife and two close advisers as part of its broadening lobbying-for-earmarks investigation that led to the imprisonment of ex-Rep. Duke Cunningham (R-Calif.).

Rep. Ken Calvert (R-Calif.) has also come under financial scrutiny by the FBI, which sent a special agent from its office in Riverside, Calif., to the Cannon House Office Building to retrieve the records of the lawmakers and advisers.

Source: Paul Kane, Roll Call, June 8, 2006. The investigation is ongoing.

Read on . . .

We know that is it very likely Jerry Lewis will soon face legal action against him. So, let's see, John Doolittle has had to leave the committee because of possible criminal action. Jerry Lewis looks to be heading in the same direction. And once the FBI has finished its attention in Mr. Lewis's records, they'll turn to yours. This is not about you, though you are the poster child. This is about the House Republican Leadership's blatant disregard for the base -- the same base that is tired of the pork, the earmarks, and the FBI investigations into GOP corruption that make the headlines every other week.

And now a question for a readers who think we should not be willing to fight for this cause. How can the Republican Party reclaim the trust of the American people when we do not expect our leadership to live up to the standards they themselves say they will uphold? If we don't clean our own house in this off year, can we really blame the voters for not wanting to put the GOP back in power next year? And if the we don't put a cleaned up GOP in power next year in the House and Senate . . . well . . . enough questions.

If we don't wage this fight now -- in an off year -- with the GOP, this demon of corruption will fester. I liken this to an exorcism. The demon will struggle to keep hold the most when the exorcism is working best. We must fight on. We. Must. Fight.

Get me an old priest, a young priest, and a band of volunteers to work the phone.

Who's with me?

and hereby confirm that. Since I'm in Barton's district, and he's part of the House GOP leadership, I am entitled to be a festering boil on his buttocks on this (and any) festering problem.

It's war -- so when can we start shooting back at the enemy Democrats?

I'm in an adjoining district to Calvert, and intend to write my Republican Representative, well actually his field rep, and ask why the Congressman is supporting someone who is under a cloud.

of the "all Republicans are crooks" branding, especially when we've done altogether too much to deserve it. A Republican HAS to be Caesar's Wife.

I somewhat reluctantly decided that last July 1 was a good day to retire from an appointed position in a Republican administration here because I looked around and couldn't find anyone that I wanted to be associated with personally or professionally; everything was about getting a lobbying contract or getting laid or paid. Now I'm watching a Republican government in my state crippled by allegations of corruption, which ring all too true. The heads of one of the major companies in the State and who are the mainstay of Republican money here took a plea on public corruption charges, one sitting legislator and two former legislators did the perp walk, and we're still waiting for the other shoe to drop. Most believe that shoe will drop on Ben Stevens, Ted's son, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it dropped on Ted as well, and Don Young is in the sights as well.

For almost thirty years Alaska has been one of the Reddest of Red States; that status is in jeopardy, serious jeopardy. If the election were held today, most any Democrat would have a credible chance against most any Republican - and they sold out so cheaply!

the problem being that ANY party in charge for too long in one place gets this type of baggage. Sometimes a change IS needed even if it results in liberal children being in charge for a while.

So does your support end when he's doing a perp walk, or when he's actually in jail?

Just being clear on what the standards we should hold our politicians to.

The OJ Standard...

The Trafficant standard...(love to see a shot of him without the piece by the way)

The "Cold Cash" Jefferson standard....

Or the Edmund Edwards standard, "caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."

was the rule back when Democrats had hereditary power; they can even get away with live boys now, and some even dead girls. My standard is when there's a guilty plea or a conviction; all too many indictments are nothing more than politics by other means.

We're getting it.

Redstate and the blogosphere in general is getting the truth out.

With the spending they've been doing they should have lemonade instead of Calvert.

You will do our cause more harm than good, and the ramifications could extend well beyond your district.

What is more important, the cause you belong to, or the office you hold?

Evil prevails only when good men do nothing.

Why not put both of them on the committee? They need to be exposed for the crooks they are. We need to get all our Republican crooks exposed. It's the only way to get rid of them. Sure, the Dems will take over for a while, but at least this crop of thieving Repubs will be gone. They have all been like kids in a candy store, stealing everything they could get their hands on.

I'm glad they have restored dignity and honor to Washington. All we need is DeLay and Gingrich back, and the Republicans will be in the minority for the next twenty years...
