Pelosi blinks?

If so, about blipping time.

I, alas, do not have access to Congressional Quarterly*, so we'll have to make do with TPM Muckraker's quoted text:

House Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi was to meet with Rep. Alcee L. Hastings late Tuesday to close the door on his bid to become chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, a congressional aide said.
But Pelosi, D-Calif., has not yet decided who will get the job, according to the aide. . . .

Pelosi met with Harman two weeks ago to discuss the House Intelligence Committee chair job. There is little to suggest Pelosi will reverse her intention to replace Harman atop the panel.

And it only took three weeks of hitting the woman with +3 Clubs of Objective Reality, too**. You sometimes have to wonder whether the Democrats were actually expecting to get the House back; God knows that they've been slow on the draw since then. You'll note that Harman's still not on Pelosi's Christmas card list, either. Ach, well.

And now... hmmm. I wonder where we can get our soon to be Speaker to cave, next***?

*Gack, but I'm a geek.

**A double geek.

***What, I'm supposed to applaud the woman for taking three weeks to come to a decision that most of us made within two minutes? Uh-huh.

I mean, seriously: +3 Clubs of Objective Reality? Maces of Disruption would have solved the problem nicely, a lot faster. A Rod of Smiting would have solved the Murtha issue pretty quick, too.

Up all the charges on our supply of Rods of Smiting on our own Reps...

...perhaps you haven't noticed that her eyelids are fused to her eyebrows?

It was obvious that the Dems had nothing new to offer in the way of policy innovations or intelligent alternatives. After all, the rallying cry was more of a whine: "we can do better" (Dean's infamous "three" word bumpersticker).

But I thought they could at the very least manage the nuts and bolts of political process. Apparently, even my low expectations were too lofty. "Who will get appointed to chair which committee?" seems to be a question that was seldom asked and never seriously contemplated.

I didn't think Pelosi could blink.

and I think you meant to say Harman isn't on Savior Pelosi's Festivus card list, didn't you?

According to this link, Hastings himself says that he was "informed by the speaker-elect" that he would not serve as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

This is good news and bad news, from a RedState point of view. Bad news, because we will have one less whipping boy in Congress who can be publicly attacked for corruption. Good news, because national security secrets will not be entrusted to an impeached judge.

Rep. Pelosi has probably realized that she blundered by endorsing Jack Murtha as Majority Leader, only to be rebuked by House members of her own party. She couldn't very well go out on a limb for an impeached former judge while claiming she would clean corruption out of the House.

This could be the first sign that Pelosi could be intimidated into backing away from a far-left agenda by criticism from the minority Republicans, or even members of her own party. She may be getting a "reality check" and realizing that she can't force Berkeley politics through a divided House full of freshmen elected by narrow margins (and an even closer Senate), and that governing is a lot harder than criticizing.

Hopefully, President Bush and Senate Republicans have noticed, and will take courage, and be willing to stand up to Pelosi when required, using the tools at their disposal (veto, filibuster, and trying to peel off moderate Democrats).

After the horrible election results, Republicans won't be able to push the agenda they could have in 2005 (if they had been united), but gridlock is still better than a lurch to the left.

Welcome to the real world, Madame Speaker!

The bad news: Conservatism is hard to sell. The good news is that it works.

Or did she stand up to the CBC? Wasn't it the CBC that was forcing her into this position in the first place?

The closing quote of his statment is the first time I've ever heard the gangsta slang "haters" used in political discourse... I found it amusing:

"Sorry, haters, God is not finished with me yet."

If Rove knew what he was doing, he would've had Bush talking about all the "haters" out there months ago.
