Sen. Durbin Doesn't Want Troops Defended

When Dick Durbin called American troops Nazis on the floor of the Senate, he faced angry voters across the country largely because of the outrage rightfully expressed on talk radio.
Dick Durbin today, on the floor of the Senate, declared that he wanted to be able to call American soldiers Nazis and war criminals without interference from the likes of Rush Limbaugh. He objected to Senator Norm Coleman's attempts to introduce an amendment making sure the Fairness Doctrine would never become law again.
Durbin, since attacking American troops, has largely fought for the Fairness Doctrine's return as a way to silence those who'd defend our troops from Durbin's insulting remarks. Today, he fired the first shot by killing Senator Coleman's amendment.

Have the above be the second panel, and make the first panel be Durbin on the floor of the Senate droning on and on and on about how evil Bush is and how wrong the war is, etc.

A joke that made the rounds in 1964 went as follows : The major networks were very fair. On the evening news, they would give the Democrats two minutes to criticize Goldwater and then give the Republicans two minutes to criticize Goldwater.
....as the most nauseating person in the Senate. What a total d-bag. He is completely clueless about any serious issue. Did anyone hear him try to debate oil prices with the DoE official shortly before last year's elections? He was destroyed. I know Illinois is a blue-state, but how can they keep sending such a dimwitted leftist back to the Senate election after election.

For the exact same reason that the state of California keeps sending blown bulb Barbara Boxer back to the Senate.

The state GOP parties in Illinois and California have been fielding dismal candidates the past several elections. Jack Ryan had a chance at the Senate in 2004 until his sex scandal exploded. The last real good viable Republican to win state-wide in California was Pete Wilson (who should've been the GOP nominee for prez in 1996). There just isn't anybody real good those states can throw up there in a statewide race. Tom McClintock is probably the next best hope for California as far as Republicans are concerned. I'm not sure about the "political bench" in Illinois.

...in her first Senate run in '92 ("The Year of the Woman"), losing by 3 pts. Babs has won her two succeeding races by ever increasing margins.
Tom McClintock, or maybe Chris Cox. But I think Babs and Di_Fi are going to keep their seats until they either retire or expire.

The state GOP parties in Illinois and California have been fielding dismal candidates the past several elections.
This is one of those "known facts" that make a lot people feel good, but probably doesn't have much basis in reality.
IL is a special case because they blew one election (twice) with the Ryan fiasco.
But the fact is, most of the candidates on the GOP side in both states have been fairly decent over the past decade or two, and when they haven't it's been because the GOP doesn't have a chance in these states anyway so recruitment has been poor.
The truth is, you could run Rudy Guiliani or Arnie in either CA or IL for Senate, and the odds are better than 50-50 that both would lose (badly).
A lot of people like to blame the Party when demographics are against you, but the truth is Republicans (and I mean *any* type of Republican - conservative, "moderate" or liberal - and pretty much all types have been run in CA since 1990) simply are generally unable to win in states like CA & IL, just like the Dems are at a massive disadvantage no matter who their candidate is in UT or MS.
The Illinois Republican Party no longer exists as meaningful opposition.
Lesson learned the hard way- when you hand the party reins over to RINOs and turn a blind eye to nominally Republican reps feasting at the statehouse pork trough, the party eventually goes over a cliff and guys like Durbin have no opposition.
threw the IL GOP into a real tizzy. It's taking a long time to recover from that mess. Unfortunately, the only people that seem to emerge to run for office for the Republicans are named "Ryan".
There are a number of capable Republican candidates out there, especially in central IL, where the area trends quite a bit more conservative. While he's not the perfect guy, I think Tim Johnson did a decent job as a rep for our district, and seemed to have good core conservative values (it's been a couple of years ago now since I moved from there, so I may have selective memory...)
...of his own. His approval ratings have been south of 40% and his massive tax hikes were even rejected by his own party. The best hope Republicans have in Illinois is going to be playing off a total clown like Blagojevich.
“.....women and minorities hardest hit”
however, he wasn't very popular going into the 2006 election and yet still won handily over Taapinka. The reality is that short of commiting a serious crime a Democrat will win any state wide office here in Illinois for the foreseeable future. I went to a speech given by Tony Peraica, who nearly became the first Republican Cook County Commissioner, and he is extremely impressive and he may run for Durbin's seat, but even so, I don't know that even he has any legitimate chance of pulling off a statewide victory.

He's been approached to run for various statewide offices including governor, but he wisely stuck with a sure seat. He (like most Republicans in Illinois) has very little name recognition outside central Illinois.
Blago is hated by everyone on both sides of the ailse, but unless he gets convicted, we're stuck with him.
Maybe someone will convince Iron Mike to run against Durbin. He's one of the very few people who could win Chicago as a Republican.
Socialism doesn't work. It looks nice on paper, but it's been tried and it's failed miserably every time (usually accompanied by widespread death and suffering).

Actually, based on the rumor mill, more likely than any Republican seriously challenging Blago (which will never happen), AG Lisa Madigan may go after Rod in the 2010 Dem primary. I'd probably cross the aisle to vote in that primary, anything to get rid of Blago, there's no way she could be worse.
Also, I love da coach, but suspect he has way too much dirty laundry to survive a run for office, and he is way to sane to give up the good life for all that bs. Otherwise he would have run against Obama.
I am not heartbroken to see ol' Blow-Dry finally getting his. It's been a hoot watching his proposals get shot down.
because none of his proposals have affected you personally. The same can't be said for me. Check out SB 1674

the entire mortgage industry stood up against and defeated for now, but why should we have to spend our time defeating ridiculous bills that do nothing but act as big brother and tell us how to run our own industry.

or I am missing yours. I cannot stand the Rod-ster, and I am very thankful I no longer live in IL and have to live under his reign. His bills ARE ridiculous, and I am quite happy to just watch him get skewered. I certainly don't appreciate him wasting people's time, and wish he would just crawl under a rock in his beloved Chicago and wait out his term until someone more capable kicks his sorry behind out of office.
I am thankful I am now back in MO, with Gov. Matt Blunt, who is a breath of fresh air compared to what you guys have in IL.
we both get each other's point. Rod is awful. You are enjoying watching him squirm since you are out of state and none of it affects you personally. I, on the other hand, am touched by one of his most dreadful proposals known as SB 1674. If he made a proposal like that, and it affected you the way SB 1674 would have affected me, then you may not be so coy in your enjoyment of his downfall.

I hope that the few decent pols that are there can somehow help overcome the crap that you're encountering.
...is running for US Senate along with another Ill. Republican named Ryan (Jim), and after another Ill. Republican named Ryan (George) resigns the Governor's office in disgrace.
Forget the bench, can't y'all Illini find someone with a name other than 'Ryan' to run for statewide office?

the debacle wasn't Keyes, but rather Jack Ryan not revealing what was in his divorce. By the time that came out, someone was going to wind up being the sacrificial lamb and Keyes was chosen. It would have been interesting if that information hadn't come out. The whole Barack Obama phenomenon may not have happened. He, Jack Ryan that is, was potentially a very strong candidate.

The reason Durbin keeps getting elected in Illinois is that he is a Democrat and the way voting is run in Illinois, Dems get elected just for being Dems. No accountability required. Hilter would get elected in Illinois if he ran as a Democrat. Maybe that's why Durbin keeps making so many references to Nazis.
with his socialist / big government ideas then any Republican. Dr. Josef Mengele would have enjoyed tinkering with human embryos and endorsed pro-abortion policies.

Dick Durbin is Michael Moore on SlimFast. He wants to dominate every area of your life.
I'd rather see Gore get oxed than my ox get gored.
felt that the Fairness Doctrine is the Democrats gift to the Republicans. The more it stays in the consciousness the better for Republicans. There is NO chance, none, that this will become law anytime in the near future. Most of the country sees it exactly for what it is, an assault on the first amendment, and they will hold Democrats responsible for trying to make it law. What is going on with Durbin is just such an illustration.

Trying to re-institute the Fairness Doctrine actually has two positive effects for us:
- It sends the Nutroots into a lather (always good when these guys are put on display as exactly the kind of Brownshirts that are)
- It turns Independents and Moderates right *off*, and is the quickest thing short of tax hikes that reminds Independents and Moderates why they stopped voting for the Dems in the first place.
Nothing gets people riled up more than telling them what they can (and cannot) listen to or watch.
So - Go Dick, go! Keep plugging Government Censorship! It's a winner! For *our* side!!

I'm imagining a cartoon where Durbin is shoving the Bill of Rights down the throat of a radio broadcaster, shouting "You're speaking too much! That's not fair!"
