Sen. McConnell: Put Jim DeMint on Finance

“With Craig Thomas's loss, it is important that Mitch McConnell replace him with a fiscal conservative and not George ‘I blocked John Bolton’ Voinovich.”

This week Republicans were met with the news that Senator Craig Thomas (R-WY) died after battling cancer. While the Republicans in Wyoming will be able to put forward a list of candidates for replacement, ensuring the seat remains in Republican hands, there is a troubling situation developing in Washington.

Senator Thomas sat on the Senate Finance Committee. Already on that committee are Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Trent Lott (R-MS), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), and Gordon Smith (R-OR), among other Republicans. These are not the votes for a fiscal conservative policy.

While the Republicans were in the majority, Olympia Snowe regularly sabotaged fiscal conservative ideas. In the minority, Snowe has been joined by Gordon Smith in siding with the Democrats. With Craig Thomas's loss, it is important that Mitch McConnell replace him with a fiscal conservative and not George "I blocked John Bolton" Voinovich.

Mitch McConnell should put Jim DeMint (R-SC) on the Senate Finance Committee. DeMint is both a solid Republican and a fiscal conservative. Already on the Joint Economic Committee, DeMint would be a natural choice to move up to Finance.

You can do your part. Call Mitch McConnell today and tell him to put Jim DeMint on Finance. McConnell's number is (202) 224-2541.

100 percent agreed. DeMint is very much needed on Finance.

No-brainer.

I favored the rehab of Lott becaus he was fired for the wrong reason last time. He is not a racist. But he is a moderate political class member that has been in DC too long.

DeMint is not going to make it. The only way you keep Voinovich off is with someone who has comparable seniority. Enzi might be a good choice (he keeps the slot for Wyoming). Jeff Sessions perhaps if he'd switch from Armed Services.

DeMint for Finance... I mean come on... His name has 'mint' in it after all. It's his birth rite.

If McConnell simply goes by seniority, and puts Voinovich in there, McConnell will have proven himself no better than Frist as a Leader, and will pretty much doom the entire Senate GOP with much of the base.

If people like Voinovich keep getting put forward, most of us will us will just write off the Senate GOP for a decade...

I think this seniority stuff is part of the Senate rules, though, not just some sort of unwritten tradition.

I could be wrong, though.

Anyways, I'm expecting McConnell to go by seniority anyways.
