The Bennett amendment has passed the Senate by a vote of 55 to 43. The odious § 220 was stripped from the bill.

§ 220 would have potentially required bloggers, advocacy groups, preachers, community activists, and others to register as lobbyists with the federal government.

As Brad Smith wrote earlier, bloggers for think tanks, associations, and others would have been forced to register as lobbyists under this provision, driving up the costs and burdens of free speech.

Thank the Republicans in the Senate for pushing this issue. This is a victory for the grassroots.

was what the government was going to do with the information collected..
I do some local work for HSLDA and we have enough challenges here in NY without adding more record keeping and potential costs.

It should be noted that only 7 Democrats joined all Republicans in voting to strip this odious ยง 220 from the bill.

Thanks to the bi-partisan 7. You showed a bit of courage and common sense.

Uhh..Thank the Grassroots organizations and bloggers that got the word out to their members and put pressure on the Republican's in Congress to do the right thing.

Only then should we also thank those who took our protests forward instead of ingoring them. I'd like to think they would have done it anyway even if we had not complained, but I'm not that confident.
