Who Says the Democrats aren’t doing Anything?

Six months into the new Congress and Democrats have accomplished almost nothing for the country and continue to make one bad decision after the other.
They decided to redirect intelligence resources to study global warming, want to turn important U.S. nuclear weapons proliferation program over to United Nations control and have a senior Democratic Chairman threatening Members who question his earmarks on the House floor. Then you have Speaker Pelosi appointing Rep. William Jefferson (D-LA), in whose freezer authorities found $90,000 in cash and who has since been indicted on federal charges of racketeering, soliciting bribes and money-laundering, on a panel that oversees our national security.
But possibly the most ridiculous moments came today during an Appropriations Committee mark-up when Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) offered an amendment that raised concern about pet cats in public housing facilities that are being declawed.
Here’s the actual language of the amendment offered by Rep. Kaptur:
“The Committee is concerned about reports that some Public Housing Authorities are requiring residents to declaw their pet cats, although HUD regulations do not contain such a requirement. Declawing is a painful procedure for pets which is almost never medically or behaviorally necessary. The Committee urges HUD to notify all PHAs that declawing is not required in public housing under HUD policy. The Committee further encourages HUD to consider adding an additional provision to section 960.707 (c) that would prohibit PHAs from requiring declawing.”
The Committee actually spent time debating whether cats in public housing should or shouldn’t be declawed.
This is not what the American people send us up here to do.
But hey, who says the Democrats aren’t doing anything?

GOP stops troops from having more home time between deployments. GOP filibustered so that this wouldn't happen, because god forbid the troops get some extended time with their family at home to match their extended time in Iraq. Solid GOP thinking right there.
another way for the Democrats to send another message to the terrorists saying that they support the terrorists and will do everything possible to ensure the terrorists win.
If we had done the Webb Amendment in WWII, we would have needed a 10 million man army to project the combat power we projected during and after D-Day. People would have been to busy with their family time to continue the fight.
I'd rather see Gore get oxed than my ox get gored.
Since Germany never attacked us, we would never have entered the war in Europe. Problem solved.
And we probably would never have gone to war against Japan, because
a) Hawaii was a territory, not a state, so it's not like they really attacked the US
b) there was no UN yet to authorize it
c) we needed more time to understand what we did that made them hate us so we could try to change that image
Heck, even if we had gone after Japan, you know there's no way we woud have used the A-bomb.
If it were a war run by conservative Republicans, the rules you outlined would have applied.
Socialism doesn't work. It looks nice on paper, but it's been tried and it's failed miserably every time (usually accompanied by widespread death and suffering).

Compared to the time they spend worrying about what to name some G-forsaken post office, or some stretch of highway, I'd MUCH rather they at least address the horrible animal cruelty that is declawing.
For those that don't know - declawing consists of cutting each toe, front and back, off, at the first joint. Amputation of all ten toes.
An even more nefarious cruelty... cat juggling!
"Good Lord - I've heard about this - cat juggling! Stop! Stop! Stop it! Stop it! Stop it! Good. Father, could there be a god that would let this happen?" - some Jerk
Cats are a human health hazard. They pee/crap in a dish that they walk on/in. Then they jump up on countertops which contaminate food. Get a webcam if you don't think your well trained cat would ever do such a thing! You might as well eat off the bathroom floor. And I am allergic to them. I swerve for cats. The only redeeming factor are the really big cats like lions that would chase down rats like Henry Waxman. The guy looks like a rat.
Now Waxman the rat, no insult to Denis Savard, and our elected elite should get some priorities straight and get back to important issues like steroids in baseball. Now there is a national priority. Now tackling a huge issue to the future of the US like steroids in baseball would go a long way in redeeming the current Dem leadership batting slump.

Quite a day for such heavy legislative issues, it seems the Democrats were also getting all worked up over the IPhone/ATT business relationship.
From CNET news:
---
WASHINGTON--AT&T's exclusive right to sell the Apple iPhone drew complaints on Wednesday from Democratic politicians, though it was unclear whether they were planning to do anything about it.
"The problem with the iPhone is that the iPhone with AT&T is kind of like a 'Hotel California' service," Massachusetts Rep. Ed Markey said--in a nod to the Eagles hit, of course--during a hearing. "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave."

I guess they missed the economics lesson that markets are built from the customer upward through wants and needs and not by government decree.

On the bills to fund embryonic stem cells, for example.
On top of the Republicans who overwhelmingly voted against it, president Bush vetoed the bills, that passed without the veto-free number of votes required (thanks to Republicans).
This is part of why Democrats are bound to win the congressional elections again in '08
Now you see why nothing is done.
*Arguing that embryonic stem cell funding is bad would be irrelevant to this issue, since the original thread refers to "doing anything", without separating bad and good policy.
doing bad things, passing bad legislation - just to say something was done?
That logic is why we're currently stuck with a bloated governement filled with foolish policies, and legislation that actually accomplishes the opposite of what it was originally intended.

Welcome to life in the majority of a closely divided government. Good luck with all that.

Perhaps we could convinve my Congressman, Jimmy Moran, to go bungee jumping w/o the tether or helmet. I mean, he would be doing something.
I'd rather see Gore get oxed than my ox get gored.
It really isn't fair to say the Dems have "done nothing", since they have, for example, collected paychecks, AND ran around Washington disconnecting fax machines and phone banks during the immigration debates.
I could not believe how these paid employees that we have hired are wasting our money and yet I am not shocked.
[The Democratic Congress] want[s] to turn important U.S. nuclear weapons proliferation program over to United Nations control ....
I agree, only America should proliferate U.S. nuclear weapons.
Public Housing are going to be ground and served to the homeless. Bang! Two problems solved. No cat destruction and hungry people get fed.
Sheesh. I cannot believe that Democrats have opposable thumbs. Somebody screwed up.
Woof!

Mrs908 spilled some coffee on the floor one morning, Franz cleaned it up for her. The FedEx guy went missing. We're really careful now.

The pussy in question sits on top of my office chair as I read RS and is quite opinionated:
"If cats were running the show, there would be no Public Housing, as every cat deserves a warm, comfy private home- with a yard for those who MUST have those slobbering, ridiculous dogs. Humans would be re-educated to support us properly. Declawing- unneccessary medical procedure, stupid and expensive. What's a little clawed furniture for the reward of contemplating our beauty?"
Delivered unedited in the interest of inter-species understanding.
But you can note Qlangly's comment below. I'm guess Franz will be on board with it.
And he's fine biting the cat, too.

Insane liberal Democrats debating nonsense as usual.
I could REALLY say a few things, but I don't wanna dance with MOE and his big stick.........not on THIS issue anyway.
Dems should be required to debate declawing of cats for 3/4 of the day. That way they aren't doing much damage.

What are the supposed to spend their time doing when they're forbidden from questioning Harriet Miers?

Let the market determine what's what with the cats.
(Declawing cats is a form of torture. Were the felines radical jihadists, the Dems would blame Bush and outlaw it.)
But that religion was wiped out in a previous Jihad.

Between religious persecution and the heavy hand of Roman (aka Byzantine) taxation, the Egyptians welcomed the Arab invasions.
No jihad was necessary.
and an economy run by Hernando de Soto, do you reckon they might go back to worshipping cats?
