Why Eric Cantor Should Be Leading the Fight

"House Minority Whip Roy Blunt, R-MO, one of a number of party leaders who are among beneficiaries of earmarks in the omnibus, said Republicans disagree on how best to push for less spending and fewer earmarks. In the closing days of the session, some Republicans, including Eric Cantor, R-VA, the chief deputy GOP whip in the House, argued unsuccessfully that Republicans should resist the omnibus and push instead for a year-long continuing resolution that would hold spending at fiscal 2007 levels."
Let's not diminish Rep. Blunt's fighting for us on this issue. He was doing the Lord's work. But Eric Cantor really *gets* it. He's like a more photogenic pre-94 Newt Gingrich, willing to get into the trenches, sacrifice some earmarks, and wage war on the Democrats.
To be sure, Ramesh Ponnuru is right (can't find the link just now) -- the Republicans will not take back the House on the issue of earmarks. But they can start disciplining themselves on that issue, which will help with their overall discipline as they fight to take back the House.
Eric Cantor is showing his abilities to lead that fight. Good for him.

Stop the earmark process, it's the single biggest source of fraud in the federal government. Bring it all out in the open, no more secret allocations as payback for contributions and other favors.
Let the sun shine in. If Republicans want an issue this is it. Make it third on their list after no more taxes, build the fence-enforce the laws. This plan is a sure winner.
The war on terror will have to fade into the background, until the next inevitable attack.
His biography outiside of politics is pretty sparse. Seems like he has been groomed by prior leadership (which I don't particularly care for) to take over.
I have heard him on television and he hasn't been all that impressive to me.
Pense, Flake, Hensarling, those are the types of people we need.
That boy DOES get it. Bellying to the pork barrel shows a person has sacrificed his soul to the Beltway way of doing things. We need real, bona fide anti-establishment people up there (for definition, see Sen Tom Coburn). And we need them in positions of power.

The GOP should fight earmarks because they should. Congressmen are stewards of the taxpayers' dollars. Earmarks are a collosal waste.
