Speaker Pelosi tried to set the tone for the debate on the House retreat resolution.
Pelosi’s opening speech was witnessed by 38 of the nation's 435 elected representatives. In the gallery, 63 tourists watched, surrounded by 560 vacant chairs. As the Speaker spoke, a dozen people left. A security guard stood in the balcony in front of four long rows of empty seats.
Speaker Pelosi tried to be statesmanlike and lofty. She managed to spread all the gravitas of a $5 Valentine-shaped cookie:
And yet, minutes from the opening of the debate, the lines were longer at the Capitol gift shop to buy $5 "I Love You" Valentine-shaped cookies, and there was more talk in the halls about the freezing rain outside than the war.
What more can we expect from the Imperial Speaker.
