The nation has lost a dedicated public servant and the pro-life movement has lost one of its earliest and most dedicated heroes. Henry Hyde has passed away. Hyde served for 32 years as a Congressman from Illinois, and retired last year.

The Corner correctly notes that the Hyde Amendment, which prohibited the public funding of abortions through Medicaid, is the most important and longest-lasting piece of pro-life legislation to ever pass through Congress. Hyde was also a key proponent of the FMLA, the House manager of the Clinton impeachment, and legislation providing redress for citizens who are the victim of unjust prosecution. Hyde was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom earlier this month, but his health prevented him from attending the ceremony.

RIP, Mr. Hyde. You will be missed.

My first memories of Hyde are actually from the Iran-Contra hearings, when he eloquently compared aid to the Contras to French assistance to the American Revolution. The more different places I encountered Rep. Hyde's voice in politics, the more I respected the man even when I disagreed with him. He will be missed.

that the photo you put up of him is when he was in the Senate for the Impeachment. He was a Lion of the House and we show a picture of him in the Senate.

I found him to be a good leader. I would like to go back to the days of him and others that could disagree, without being disagreeable.

RIP, thy good and faithful servant.

On top of being a wonderful public servant. Played for the Georgetown Men's Basketball team back in the 1940s.
