Roy Blunt Raised A Good Son

And don't forget it. Matt Blunt is a good man and a good governor.

Gov. Matt Blunt (R) on Friday signed into law a bill (SB 370) that would designate facilities performing second- or third-trimester abortions or more than five first-trimester abortions each month as "ambulatory surgical centers," the AP/ABC News reports (Lieb, AP/ABC News, 7/6). Clinics with that designation are subject to increased regulation from the state Department of Health and Senior Services. The measure also would give public school districts the option of teaching an abstinence-only sex education course. School districts previously were required to include information about contraception in sex education classes (Kaiser Daily Women's Health Policy Report, 5/23). In addition, the measure prohibits people affiliated with abortion providers from teaching or supplying sex education materials to public schools.

This is a great victory for life, not to mention for public health.

Dont forget to check out Matt's budget rating from the I think the Heratige foundation..

Of course he faces a tough, tough re-election campaign in large part to due to media like the Post-Dispatch painting him as being very, very mean because he and the Republican lead state legislature reformed medicaid and it cut a lot of abusers off of the system.

The media painted it as if there were a ton of people who needed it who were just left dangling - which was completely false.

If memory served me correctly Missouri had almost a full 1/5th of its population on Medicaid and it was killing the budget.

How about running him for President. Replacing a "Compassionate Conservative" with a "Conservative who can't spell kumpasion" works for me big time.

I can get him a new birth certificate, driver's license and SS card. A really good set goes for less than $1,000. He'll have to deal with being Matt Bluntenez, but hey...

He's the only Governor to get an "A" from CATO.

Nothing like withholding information to encourage wise choices. At least they've got a governor to teach them all about douchebags.

It makes our jobs so much easier when the opposition works that way.

We're not real keen on the last of your words in the second sentence.

Thanks for the attention, all. Erick, I'll try to keep it Sunday morning clean--it hadn't occurred to me.

I'm not cowed though. There was nothing sexy about sex education, and ten years out of high school I still practice safe sex.

No abortions on this man's conscience. Thanks, Mrs. Reiter.

Further north before posting.

Apparently you are not the same Joe I went to high school with in Philly. A bit too old, though not by much.

Our sex education was taught by Mr. Braithwaite, and it was hilarious. I'd hazard a guess that I sat through some of the funniest sex ed classes ever given in a Catholic high school. It sure didn't hurt that the teacher once tried out for the role of Chandler on Friends.

Why is it that lefties trust government so well when it comes in the form of a unionized teacher but not a unionized cop?

Run like Reagan!

Sorry Neil, I don't know what you're getting at.

I think most cops are pretty great, by the way, but fill me in and I'll be a better stereotype.

You inspired the comment, but it's not aimed at you really.

If I meant it for you I'd have used the Reply To This link, heh.

"My heart was here...I feel like I have unfinished business here." - Roy Hibbert

Yes he did; now if only we could get Matt Blunt on the correct side of the embryonic stem cell research issue. He's great on everything else.

The link linked to the AP news story where Planned Parenthood was complaining it would have to spend two million dollars to upgrade its facilities. Don't you feel sorry for them?

I don't get it. The Planned Barrenhood and NARAL crowd talks a lot about wanting abortions to be safe for women, yet they complain when the state holds them to it.

is that it would likely stand up to constitutional muster given that it is a regulation that requires "more" safety standards than what is currently required.

People who offer abortions because they think women should be able to have them safely, would be hypocritical to complain about this one.

I hope PP has a nice time spending all that money upgrading their facilities.

Even a total abortion ban would pass Constitutional muster, just not federal court muster. There is quite a difference in today's world. Regardless, multiple circuit courts have held up "ambulatory surgical center" laws in other states, claiming they passed Sandra Day O'Connor's "undue burden" test. They are a big part of the reason for the decline of abortion facilities, especially second trimester ones. Planned Parenthood said they may take the law to court, in which case they will lose even more of their money.

that a Governor can be effectively pro-life even if they support government funding of stem-cell research. There's a difference between Gov. Blunt and Sen. Kennedy.

Okay, perhaps someone, somewhere, can explain to me the wisdom of abstinence-only sex ed? Now, aside from the fact that I find the concept of sex ed classes rather ineffective & hardly the prerogative of schools, the idea that abstinence education contributes anything is utterly ridiculous. Do most people past their twenties completely forget their high school mindset? Let me just ask this, for those of you who had sex ed classes, what was your response to them?

I don't know why I'm bothering to try, because I've tried to explain a conservative position to liberals before, only to find myself talking to a brick wall, but here goes:

Subjects taught in the public schools should reflect common principles and necessary knowledge that won't be learned just by living life. The part of sex ed that could be considered to meet these criteria is the health aspect.

All of us can agree to the biology aspect of it. e.g. This is how pregnancy is started. I think we can all agree that information regarding sexually transmitted diseases, and other complications of sex (risk of depression or suicide for teenagers) could be considered necessary knowledge.

I think we can all agree that, as part of the biology aspect, it could easily be explained that there are methods of preventing pregnancy, including barrier methods and chemical methods. The problem is that explanation could be given in about 5 minutes and these stupid jokers want to make it into a whole freaking program, including cucumber demonstrations, and abortion promotion.

That's what causes us to get our hackles up. The reason conservatives have decided to draw the line at abstinence only is that we have seen the kind of liberals who are pushing the alternatives (think Jocelyn Elders and Planned Parenthood) and have decided that our only method of keeping them away from our kids is to prohibit their nonsense from ever getting around. In order to do that, we have to draw a big bright line well away from the bucket of crap that Jocelyn and her type want to spread.

I meant what I said and I said what I meant. An elephant's faithful 100 percent.

I appreciate you taking the time to reply to my post, even if you appear to consider it a waste of time.

"I've tried to explain a conservative position to liberals before,"

I resent the implication in that, thank you.

You've said it yourself: almost any scientific value sex ed classes have could be explained in a biology class. I concur with this. What I do not concede is the concept of abstinence education being necessary (anymore than I believe condoms-on-cucumbers are). I'd put the entire endeavor into the "time better spent studying the politics of Lesotho" category.

STD education? This is the job of parents, not of school administrators. Even if you want this at public schools, this could be explained in the period of a single afternoon assembly.

"The reason conservatives have decided to draw the line at abstinence only is that we have seen the kind of liberals who are pushing the alternatives"

So your response to an ineffective and resource wasting program is...an ineffective and resource wasting program? I don't know if you ever were part of a sex ed program, abstinence only or not, but I'll tell you my experience. It was useless. That's it. I was sexually active at a relatively young age, and even then I was quickly able to discern the do's and don't of sex. Some I learned from my father, other from health magazines and internet resources.

Does anyone here truly believe telling a group of 16 year-olds to not have sex, over and over, will actually have that effect?

Your points, itrytobenice, are a convincing indictment against public schools wasting their time on comprehensive, twice a week classes on how to pick the diaphragm that right for you. They're not a reasonable endorsement of an ineffective policy.

and that's the effectiveness of sex education classes and their place in the schools. A) they're ineffective, and B) sex education should be the responsibility of the parent and not the government. Good call on that one.

Well by zuiko

Does anyone here truly believe telling a group of 16 year-olds to not have sex, over and over, will actually have that effect?

Is that what an abstinence only sex-ed class entails? I got no idea, but I kind of doubt it. Another thing is that sex-ed starts much earlier than 16 years of age. Should we be telling 6th graders how to use condoms? I don't think so. I don't think they should have a sex-ed curriculum for that age at all, but many districts do. Abstinence only would be a huge improvement for this age group.

…when it does no better than teaching abstinence?

Our Governor is doing very well. The Post, (as referenced above) had him DOA this time last year… Matt is DOA no longer!

Next year Matt runs against Jay Nixon our state AG.

Now in any ‘fair’ election fight this would be a cake walk for Blunt. Nixon has more baggage than the lost luggage room at American Airlines… but again getting that news out through the heavily liberal / Democratic media is what will make it a race.

We have a fine blog that tracks conservative issues in Missouri

make sure the check out the Jay Nixon ‘slush fund’

The city of St. Louis will always vote 80% or more for the Democrats. St. Louis County and St. Charles County are both solidly conservative, but Blunt will have to do better than Talent did there last time around. Blunt should carry the rural areas and especially Greene County by a large amount. The reason Talent lost was that McCaskill did a lot better in places like Greene County and St. Charles County than most Democrats do.

Blunt really has a fantastic record here in Missouri. Aside from the Medicaid deal (which is old news), there really isn't any ammo the left can use against him.

has always had more impact on the election results than the rural areas of other states (like Illinois). The Springfield and Columbia areas are starting to have more impact, and both trend slightly more liberal than the real rural areas.

I'm just thankful for my rep, Todd Akin. A great conservative. And I'm hoping for a re-emergence of Jim Talent. If there was a victim of 2006, he was one. But I can say that Claire pleasantly surprised me with her immigration vote - I sent her a thank you note for that one.

have always had a ton of libs, but the burbs around them in Boone County and Greene County are chalk full of conservative voters.

Yes, Todd Akin is an outstanding rep - his son is serving in Iraq right now, as is Kit Bond's.

I like Talent a lot, but he isn't the best "candidate" out there. He's right on nearly all the issues, but he isn't the most charismatic or captivating person. Substance always trumps style as far as I'm concerned, but style will win elections. I'd like to see Todd Akin run for Claire's seat in 2012.

I attended this bill signing in Jeff City, and I can tell you that I have never been more proud of this Governor; and not because of the legislation that he signed (which was marvelous in its ownright), but because of what he said when responding to a question regarding the fallacious "separation clause". This pinhead reporter from the local NBC affiliate in Colubmia (the same outlet that barred its jounralists from wearing American Flag lapel pins after 9/11) asked the Governor if he was violating the "Separation of Church and State", by signing this bill at Concord Baptist Church (my church, gotta plug that). Blunt gave the most eloquent response in taking this reporter behind the woodshed to educate him that the separation clause was intended to keep government out of the affairs of the church, not to keep the church out of government. Blunt affirmed that God should have a place in a government founded upon his canon, and that church's such as [Concord] have shown a conviction for fighting for the lives of the innocent, and as this legislation means a lot to this constituency, it is completely appropriate to sign the bill here. He likened it to signing legislation protectign highway workers at a highway construction site... which would be equally appropriate. Those in attendance gave him a standing ovation for this very cogent response, and remained clapping until the reporter sat down. It was very moving.
