The Appropriate Balance Of Power

Hillary Clinton's motto for economic policy is that she "want[s] to get back to the appropriate balance of power between government and the market." Of course, the issue is not how one maintains "a balance of power" between the government and the markets and it is typical of a statist that she would see issues in terms of a power competition between markets and government. There is no zero sum game to be played here. Allowing free markets to operate freely pulls the most people out of poverty, enriches the widest group of people and, not coincidentally, allows the government to collect the most revenue from a truly broad, truly progressive tax system.
I suppose that there will always be people who think that as bureaucrats and politicians, they will be able to rig the system to ensure that the economy works better under their intelligent supervision than it would if the economy operated freely. But we have been down that road more times than we can count and the travels have never ended well. When economic illiteracy is proposed as a campaign promise by a Presidential candidate, that candidate ought to be rejected at the polls. Your pocketbook depends on it.
UPDATE: More from Greg Mankiw, who points out the fact that the Clinton economic plan appears to be a budget buster. Megan McArdle weighs in as well.

What an amazing coincidence that this article was posted right below this one, about how Hugo Chavez is threatening to nationalize any farm that trys to sell milk at a price higher than what the Venezualan government is offering.
THAT'S what an "appropriate balance of power between the government and the market" leads to.

Are you actually serious with calling Hillary "Fatso", or are you a troll working for Hillary?
First of all, I happen to think that Hillary is an attractive woman and she's not at all fat--but I digress. Second of all, your post is so offensive to me, that it actually makes me want to go out and vote for Hillary. Therefore, if your goal is to give Hillary a victory in November, then keep this garbage up.
when she very stupidly attempted to take over 1/6th of the national economy, the Universal health care gambit. Now what is it in the the word "universal" that would start to imply balance?
After Nevada Fatso is starting to feel her oats, like any other horse. The real, authoritarian Hillary is peeping out at us, the palms already sweaty, the breathing getting a little heavy. All those heads to be knocked together, the scores settled, the little people to be reminded of what they are, the sublime exhilaration of a life long craving for punitive power almost within her fat, little hands.
Don't be cautious Hillary, show us what you are. At least it will take attention off your husband who is disintegrating mentally right in front of us.

you will notice that I did attack her on the merits, such as they may be, of her proposals. Which proposals rest on centralization and power, and which therefore call into question the nature and character of the proposer.
As to what we need; let's say that all things considered it's appropriate rather than necessary. Let's also say that disparaging comments about Hillary are not rare on RS, or unique to me and that it is a overly gratuitous courtesy you would extend to her who would not extend even a minimal respect to the electorate. Except to garner their votes.
I was settled down when I did the post, I am settled down now.
How are you doing Neil ?

You see, we do not want Red State to degrade like Daily Kos, where nobody bats an eye if you call the President a chimp.
So please stop.

I suppose she would propose more government backed enterprises like Fannie Mae. More fraud there than Enron+Worldcom+etc. $10+ trillion and no one went to jail, no one even had to pay back the tens of millions in fraud bonuses. Who was the CEO, why none other that the former Clinton White House budget director...
More government regulation means more business will leave the country. Also, while there's plenty of crooked characters on Wall Street, there's at least as many if not more in the non-profit and government enterprise sectors.

This is typical, and folks like Hillary occupy our political landscape all over the place. I call them fair weather capitalists. They love capitalism until there is a reason not to love it like the current economic crisis. This is happening in response to the mortgage crisis as well.
Hillary will use this crisis to expand government regulation and interference and take us a few steps closer to socialism unless she is called out for her actions.
Here is how I wrote about the Hillary types, including Hillary herself, in the mortgage business.
