And for this, ve may tank Greg Mankiw.

Okay. Enough with the fake accent. Just consider the following:

  1. Milton Friedman works his magic by proxy in Estonia. Prosperity reigns as a result. I continue to be awed and amazed by the fact that a former satellite of the Soviet Union is more free-market minded in its approach to economic policy than the United States, the supposed bastion of free-market capitalism. Perhaps our friends in Estonia can be kind enough to show us the error of our ways. And perhaps we can be kind enough to listen.
  2. The middle class is disappearing. But this is a good thing--at least for many of the former members of the middle class. Funny how little you hear of this kind of upward mobility, eh?

Why should you be surprised, disappointed maybe, but surprised? There are several nations in Eastern Europe that have adopted the flat tax and the individual wealth it leads to is common sense economics. Increased individual wealth adds to the store of capital and growth within a nation, the sort of thing leftists say they want. The "we've got to get this country moving again" shtick is always on their lips so you would think they mean it.

What it comes down to is our collectivist thugs are more powerful and influential than their collectivist thugs, a small surprise. That, and given legal restrictions and protections, more vicious. That is, we to some extent are protected from them, being not touched by the full weight of their venom.

"a man's admiration for absolute government is proportinate to the contempt he feels for those around him". Tocqueville

I had the privilege of listening to Laar speak just a few weeks ago. Amazing man, and really inspirational. It's interesting to see what can happen in a system before it gets entrenched in both protectionism (from the right) and anti-business (from the left) efforts, and as he said, he was young enough to not know what is impossible, and just to do it. Would that our country could see its way clear to this kind of free market path.
