Alex Tabarrok on how economic growth will lead to longer and healthier lives:
Forget the talk of recession. The world is about to enter a new era in which miracle drugs will conquer cancer and other killer diseases and technological and scientific advances will trigger unprecedented economic growth and global prosperity.
Pie in the sky optimism? Perhaps. But there are reasons to be optimistic, and they rest not on science fiction but within the badly misnamed "dismal science," economics.
That's just the sampler. Read the whole thing.

...but I just got laid off from a job after just over four years, the longest I've ever held a job in a very serendipitous R&D market, run by companies that rarely understand the field of chemistry. I'm seriously considering taking my talents on to a sole propreitorship level, and starting my own private micro-scale synthesis lab. No admin, no HR, no labor (except my own), billable hours almost rivaling a lawyer (60 a week at least if I want), 100% made in the USA, I keep 100% of the take after taxes. And that's going to be a crapload even if Clinton maggots her way into office.
Your citation gets it right, at least I think he's correct. I don't think times are going to be tough for scientists, especially for those that strike out on their own even during the recession some people claim is coming. I think they are going to make a killing, and deservedly so, finally (six years of graduate school in poverty gives you a sense of entitlement that's tough to shake, I'll admit). And, (unlike me) these scientists are going to hire relatively skilled labor, and not much else. So much for the middlemen, and too bad for them! I prefer to go even more bare-bones, but most of my fellows won't, so there should be lots of skilled people becoming more successful soon, instead of settling for a lackluster salary.
1.5 million are here already by the article's reckoning. the other 4.5 million are going to be flocking here. Talent would come flying into this country, if only the immigration laws were more fair to those that go by the numbers...
I just want to be in front of that perfect wave when it hits...I'll let everyone know how it's going.
So get thee out and embrace an education in the sciences!
