Bearing Drift has the details on Phil Kellam, who is trying to take out Thelma Drake (VA-2). Mr. Kellam, it seems, has been convicted of assaulting a lady while he was a student at Elon University back in the late 70's.
Hopefully the voters will lay the smack down on Mr. Kellam.

But I'm not sure it will get much play or even matter too much down there. Each time I go to Virginia Beach to visit my parents, it has become increasingly leftist. Even when the area was represented by Democrat Owen Pickett, it was relatively conservative. The paper, which was pretty centrist when I was growing up, has become nothing but a reposit for DNC talking points. As a result, I've encountered many people who are now openly hostile to the Republican party. Former neighbors, reliably conservative, are now trashing Drake and praising Kellam. I really don't know what's going on down there, but it's not good. I apologize for the tone; I'm feeling especially pessimistic today.
There is a Drake ground game hard at work. I've seen the signs and bumper stickers, and I know they've gone door-to-door in many parts of the community, and I can only hope their efforts will be rewarded. Drake is an effective Congresswoman, and a very nice person in general. For her to lose to Kellam would be a shame. The Kellams feel entitled to Virginia Beach, his father and grandfather having been "giants" in Virginia Beach politics. Between the open hostility toward Republicans and the family name, I think Drake has an uphill climb. It can be done, but it will take everything going right.
but this is almost 30 years ago. I mean, it would be one thing to have happened in, say 1998. But 1978? And Simple Assault isn't necessarily hitting someone - from CrimBlog (NC):
In North Carolina, there are multiple levels of assaults, with differing levels of punishment.
At the bottom of the hierarchy that I'll be dealing with is Simple Assault. This means an illegal unwanted touching of another person, or putting them in reasonable fear of such a touching. In other words, it can range very widely from "jumping at" or "pretending to hit" someone without actually touching them, all the way up grabbing, hitting, etc.
This is a Class 2 misdemeanor, which means the allowed sentence is anywhere from 1 to 60 days, and this may be an active sentence in jail or may be suspended and placed on probation.
Just as every cop is a criminal, and all the sinners saints - Sympathy for the Democrats
"Assault" has little to do with actually touching someone in any manner. Assault is the Threat of an unwanted touch. Battery is the actual touch. So he may not have ever touched her. She just had to feel threatened by him to charge him with Assault. But your point still stands, is a guy not allowed to change after 30 years? Drop it and find a Substantial point to attack him from (unless you can find a history of such complaints and charges that carries to within the last 10 years or so...)

of being convicted with hearsay evidence by the drive by media of having once used the "N" word, right? That is, only if you can be described with the "R" word.

it has the details.
Basically, he was drunk and she was taking too long in a drive through line. He got out of his car and screamed at her and reached through the window and pulled her hair.
That by itself was enough for the nutroots to declare GWB unfit to be president.

About ten days ago, you mentioned that Karl Rove was putting out the word that Republicans will hold the House and Senate. Have you heard anything else that supports that opinion? Despite the upsurge in Bush's numbers, it hasn't transfered to some of the more important House and Senate races yet. Despite several good weeks, Bob Novak still has Republicans losing 14 seats in the House.

It wasn't my intention to hijack a thread. I just noticed this thread was begun by Erick and I hoped he might shed more light on last week's post.
Don't follow Erick around. If you have an issue to take up with him, use the contact form.
I've been followed around by someone recently. I didn't like it, the follower didn't meet his objective, and it just annoyed everyone else around. Now Erick seems very good at ignoring people who should be ignored – I guess being on the front page lets him feel secure in doing that – but it's still an unpleasant thing to do.
If your issue isn't with him, but rather is just a political issue, write a diary and be done with it.

Take a deep breath. I don't post often, so I guess I am unfamiliar with the purpose of the COMMENT section. Don't worry, it won't happen again.
was a republican?
If Dim, he could have drug her out of the car and raped her. He could then run for President on the Dim ticket.
Envisioning when all that is Left is the Right.
Apparently Kellam plead guilty to assault but "Prayer for Judgement" means the case was then dismissed. So he was never convicted.
Bearing Point has this correction posted and has apologized.
Prayer for Judgement or similar usually means D is consenting to some or another charge, something like a nolo. In most states that's the same as a guilty plea or a conviction. Don't think it would be considered a dismissal, but some states have strange laws, so I may be wrong.
