Harold Ford is Screaming "Racism" Over This Ad 76 Comments (0 topical, 76 editorial, 0 hidden) Post a comment »
Via the National Review:
“On Friday afternoon, the Corker for Senate campaign denounced a new RNC advertisement that is ‘over the top, tacky and not reflective of the kind of campaign we are running,’“ wrote Tom Ingram, chairman of the Corker campaign, in a letter to station managers. “We are disappointed that the advertisement continues to run and request that station managers across the state strongly consider pulling this advertisement immediately.” . . .
Now that another ad making reference to the party, this one produced by the RNC, has appeared, the Corker campaign has released a statement saying that Corker “believes this new ad has no place in this, or any other campaign.”
...deconstructs that response, and quite a bit else. I should update with the link.

It's about as ironic as having ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife -- which is to say, not ironic at all. Just false.
They are making points about his congressional record containing ridiculous statements and votes.
They are insinuating that he likes to party and date.
Clearly they are trying to show his "true" values.
Where is the racist part?
hilarious! the last guy's face was priceless, followed by the woman mouthing "call me" hehehe.
but seriously? racism? ooookay....
whose ads are the best?
I vote Bouchard. but this has been a darn good ad season so far!
It *is* a tacky ad, and doubly so for having peronsal innuendos.
But very funny!
"Sure he's taken money from porn producers, but who hasnt?"
I didnt realize attacking personal character of someone was 'racism'
when they were black. Chalk up all those attacks on Steele to racism, eh?
new poll confirming that Carson may be in trouble in Indiana. This could be the sleeper race of the year...

certainly sounded clearly racist to me :-)
Is there ever going to come a point in this country where it doesn't occur to people to play the race card when they are criticized?

closer J, when playing the race card will be a thing of the past.
Question. When do you think Ford was toast, in the latest debate when Corker showed Ford's voting record or when Ford crashed Corker's campaign event?

"The trouble with our liberal friends is not that they're ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so." - Ronald Reagan
I'd say it was when Ford crashed the campaign event. He made a bloody fool out of himself and Corker got lucky, the media actually picked up on it rather than burying it. Corker can talk all day about voting records and statements but if it doesn't get relayed to the citizenry he's just preaching to the choir.

The media almost had no choice but to cover it - Ford intruded on the middle of a press conference. How would the media folk explain a total absence of coverage?
Practiccally everybody I've heard opine on the matter - regardless of ideology thinks that Ford's antics were absolutely idiotic.
If he hasn't fired the guy who recommended that stunt he's even dumber than I thought.
I am never surprised by the ability of the media to ignore things that hold the left in a negative light and highlight things they can paint as negative to the right. Actually I'm surprised that the local TV stations used it; like I said Corker got lucky.

Can somebody explain to me how that was supposed to be racist?
The Fuzzy Puppy of the VRWC.
Any ad against an African American candidate is racist, unless, of course, it is against Mike Steele, in which case it is fair game given that he is, after all, a sell out Republican candidate.
couldn't find racism right before your eyes. And you just have to bring "God" into it don't you? Makes you superior or something, huh? Or because she "raised you right" it would make your Mother Superior...

Can yout point to Harold Ford's statement or article where he said this was racist? I don't see a link and can't google anything up.
...and my own quick search did not see any response from either him or his campaign, either. However, this fellow (warning: dKos) at least is convinced of the racism of the piece, apparently because it involves the grim vision of (gasp!) white women dating Rep. Ford.
I am exceptionally pleased to report that this particular non-issue failed to even cross my mind until dKos' Philosopher brought it up; I hesitate to use the word 'projection', of course. For that matter, one wonders how the Kossite in question felt about Rice, Bush and "We looked just like a normal couple." Probably called Condi a name that he really isn't supposed to, any more...

to Krazy Kos land every once in a while just to remind yourself that, yes Virginia, they really are nutters. unbelievable. its like they have no irony meter. tragicomic.
Thus, I could see why people may mistake him from someone from the hood and thus feel he shouldn't date white women.
Wait... that would be racist too. Duh!

Or at least provide a source for Ford "screaming racism over this ad"? By the way, Corker requested the ad not be aired. Good for him in my book, too bad the RNC thought otherwise.
Speaking of updates and ads, any chance we can expect one for this misleading piece?
He wrote the piece, not Moe.
Second, what is so awful about this ad? Strikes me as kinda funny, but I admit to liking satire.

The Fuzzy Puppy of the VRWC.
Ask Corker, I didn't comment on it =)
If you meant the phone-sex one, it's misleading in the extreme.
I took the praise of Corker's condemnation to be suggestive that you agreed, and had a reason for the same. Am I mistaken?
-----------
Even those who learn from history are surrounded by those doomed to repeat it.
I agree with Corker calling for the ad to be pulled, for the reason that I think the ad is a silly caricature of Ford. I think the scenes with the woman are in questionable taste (and of questionable relevance) for a political ad. I don't think it's racist, just "tacky and over the top" (to quote Corker's campaign chairman).
But in the South, politics is a sort of contact sport. There are rules, but this doesn't seem to break any.
I mean, I guess, your idea, drawn to its logical conclusion, means that Corker shouldn't run ads about Harold being a pretty suit who's never lived a day of his life in Tennessee.
Put differently, if you're gonna hold yourself up as a man of virtue, you pretty much open the door on your time at Heffner's pad.
-----------

...is that he could've shrugged it off. He isn't married, he isn't blind, he isn't old, he's in a serious position of power and influence (one that requires a certain presence) and his face doesn't stop any clocks. In other words, he maybe could score with a Playboy Bunny, which is not exactly a feat that would get him in trouble with a large section of the American voting public. A simple murmured "Gentlemen never talk" and Ford could've turned it around.
The Fuzzy Puppy of the VRWC.
I've had to downgrade my estimate of his intelligence of late. Too bad. I kinda liked him.

Worth repeating here that Corker isn't running this ad and doesn't approve of it. Not because of the message, but because of the "tacky and over the top" manner in which that message is conveyed.
For example, Corker has made a lot of noise about ethics and lobbying -- suppose the DNC made an ad about his relationship with Delta. Fair enough, he opened the door, yes?
Now, suppose they made that ad with actors carrying around briefcases of cash, FBI agents running around with guns, shots of Grand Jury testimony, and maybe some kid crying with a voice-over describing how his family lost their savings when Freeliant went under. Tacky and over the top, yes?
(Suppose further that Ford had the good sense and decency to call for such an ad to be pulled, and the DNC refused...)
I'm not sure what guns-drawn FBI agents have to do with lobbying. Is this what liberals think lobbyists who lobby GOPers require?
-----------
Even those who learn from history are surrounded by those doomed to repeat it.
but my point is that such a portrayal would be, ah, tacky and over the top.
Look, if you're a big fan of this ad for some reason, that's cool. I happen to think Corker has it about right.
And there is such a thing as a negative ad that isn't "tacky and over the top?" It is just the nature of the business. You would think Patty Wetterling up here in Minnesota is running against a child molester from her ads. What exactly any of that has to do with Michelle Bachman, who has never been to DC, I haven't quite figured out yet. And those are being paid for by the campaign... can't blame them on any national committee or 527.

We - at least, I think that Thomas would agree - think Corker did precisely what he was supposed to do. A meditation on the Borderer concept of the Unhallowed Hand may prove fruitful in this regard. ;)

Did you happen to see the moveon ads against Nancy Johnson, the "red handed" ad?
They tie her to Abramoff saying he got caught red handed and so did she. What did she get caught red handed FOR?
voting.
Tain't my article: for that matter, I don't actually know that Ford or his campaign hasn't complained, either.
But you can email Erick if you've got issues about his posts, thanks. :)
The Fuzzy Puppy of the VRWC.
...but wasn't Mary Carey at a recent Bush fundraising event?
If she did, Bush didn't deny it. Mr. Ford, on the other hand, tried to slip a fast one by the public by claiming, "He's never been to a Playboy mansion party"---which is all well and good, except that wasn't the accusation. He did, in fact, go to a Playboy party in Jacksonville after the Super Bowl.
If he claims going to that party in the right way. Just the right amount of smugness about "I got invited to a Playboy Party and Corker didn't" would get a few more male votes that he otherwise would have lost...

How about this: "I like football, and I like girls." :-)

It's definitely racist because at the beginning the black woman says "Harold Ford looks nice, isn't that enough?" Wait, is that black on black hate crime? No, I'm sure it's sexist though. Jingoistic? Anyways, It's All Bush's Fault™

Just as every cop is a criminal, and all the sinners saints - Sympathy for the Democrats
Could you imagine the "outrage" if it had been a white woman saying that Harold Ford looked nice enough?
you can always say that.
Harold Ford, Jr. could have just said, "sure, I was at the Super Bowl and in the course of the evening, as is prone to happen to politicians, I ended up at this thing."
I think there would have been no shame in saying that and it would have made him look honest, but I guess his character led him to make another choice. This is much more critical than the fact of his attendance at the party.
I will expound on what I felt over the Maryland controversy - I don't believe voters like to see a candidate play the race card unless they have a rock solid reason. I think this hurts the candidate and causes voters to distrust him. Ford, already a very slick politician, can't afford to have people turn against him in a state like Tennessee.
He's done.
What do you expect a "racist" commercial to be? A candidate being called "shiftless" and "one of them?"
[LOOK! I don't know, or care, what your damn problem is with African-Americans; but YOU WILL NOT come on to this website and spread this kind of racist garbage in the guise of 'attacking' it. Do you UNDERSTAND me? Or has your little problem with objective reality destroyed your ability to read words of more than one syllable?]
[Now get the Hell out of here and go back to wherever it is that the denizens will tolerate this sort of projecting dreck that you tried to peddle on us. - Moe Lane]
It's called Race-baiting. I'm sure you've heard of it.
There are still many in society, of all colors, who find the idea of mixed-race relations unsettling and unnatural. The reason HF, Jr. is making hay in Tennessee is because he is making inroads into the white suburban and rural voter, especially the older generation. These are decent, well-intentioned people, but among them unfortunately are those who see a white woman sexually enticing a black man, and something inside them - something that they don't think about hardly ever - starts to turn. It feels dirty.
This ad plays on a lot of weasel facts and is dubious on its merits. But what makes it over the line, in my book is that it plays to one of the oldest unwritten laws in the South. It's a crime for a white woman to be attracted to a black man.
Where's Atticus Finch when you need him?
There was absolutely NOTHING in that ad that was racist. I saw a large cross section of Americans supporting Ford's cause. "He looks good on TV." "Canada can take care of North Korea." "I want my taxes raised."
There's no racism, only support for the Democratic platform.
I grew up in the South and understand what you are saying, but if Ford is making inroads as you say he has, then he has done a good job of transcending race. If this ad is a concern, then maybe he hasn't done as well as you think.
Another issue is that black Playmates are rare (I hear), so if the woman shown as the Playmate were black, then that part of the commercial would be unbelievable. So perhaps Hugh Hefner is racist, and Harold Ford could pursue that angle.
The great victory of the civil rights movement is that we are even discussing racism as it pertains to this ad. Or perhaps it is the great defeat of the civil rights movement that the focus today is on dumbing down the definition of racism. Anyway, to awkwardly paraphrase Lloyd Bentsen, I have known racism, I have seen racism, and friend, this ain't racism.
They don't like.
Tell Ford to stuff it.
That's great!!!
I guess Harold ought to feel lucky that he isnt running against Vernon Robinson!!!!
LMFAO!!
There were no Native Americans, Asians or Hispanic people in the ad. Non white races were underepresented.
Duh. Now do you crackers all see?
Illegal aliens! Leaving them out has to be racist... since mentioning them seems to be.

I've looked at him on TV at least two times. I was confused at this racist bit from the get go. It wasn't until I read something today (elsewhere) that clued me in. I truly thought he was just a young guy too much in love with a tanning booth. So now that I 'know' it's really annoyed me. Where in this situation does it matter.
This is why I despise race based anything. It doesn't even matter. It's a persons actions, not the color of his skin which is important.
Ford is the same person he was when I thought he was 'white' and the same person he is now that I know he is 'black'.

I noticed in the video of Ford crashing the Corker Press Conference that Corker is an old fogey and thet Ford is young and energetic and that I wouldn't mind looking like him (physically, I mean).

It is only racism that prevents Republicans from realizing that Bill Clinton was the greatest president of all time, just because he was our first black president.

"I mean, I guess, your idea, drawn to its logical conclusion, means that Corker shouldn't run ads about Harold being a pretty suit who's never lived a day of his life in Tennessee."
Harold Jr doesnt need to represent *voters* silly...
This is all about the liberal media-Democrat complex getting a majority in Congress so they dont *have* to "slavishly" follow the pesky voters concerns.
And as long as Jr does their bidding, he can score all the babes, lobbyist meals and junkets he desires!
Cue "Happy Days are Here Again", folks ... 2 weeks until Cindy Sheehan's pal becomes Speaker in a Squeaker.

If that's the response to an ad like that, then it's all over. Race wasn't an issue in the ad, and such a retort does nothing other than prove that Harold Ford is an intellectually-bankrupt stuffed shirt. Hopefully such a response, if true, gets trumpeted loud and long, as that proves he's not able to lead. If he can't deal with his record being made fun of, how will he deal with Kim Jong-Il, the mullahs in Iran, or Osama? The mind reels.
