Jennifer Granholm is out to expand the job base in Michigan. What's she doing to induce private enterprise and entrepreneurs to create new jobs?
NOTHING!
Instead, she's reopening a prison hoping to attract out of state convicts.
So, instead of attracting entrepreneurs to create jobs, she wants to attract criminals and increase government employees?! I know Canadians are predisposed to want to expand government, but this is nuts!

Only states or regions within states seek out prison jobs if nothing else is moving their economy. It's the hinterlands, backwaters, and non-dynamic locations that go for these jobs -- which perform an important function, no doubt, but really don't generate a lot of new wealth or secondary businesses.
Now, if she were willing to take CIA black prisons, well, I'd give her points for patriotism....
SEIU is a very large, very powerful union in Michigan (probably second only to the UAW), they represent the Michigan Department of Corrections, and they're politically along the leftist fringe (they were one of the largest Howard Dean supporters). This doesn't surprise me in the least that she'd try to placate the SEIU now (or repeatedly), as some have theorized that SEIU's anger with Engler in his third and final term as governor helped Granholm get elected...

I think that she's getting desperate. A Survey USA poll out the other day shows her dead even.
