It turns out John Kerry's "Irak" joke actually can be funny!

It's a case of timing. And knowing your audience. Oh, and saying all the words in the joke. Then people laugh and applaud:

THE VICE PRESIDENT: Time and time again, we're seeing examples of Democratic Party leaders apparently having lost their perspective concerning the true nature of the enemy we face, and the need to wage this fight aggressively. No sharper example can be found than the Democratic Party chairman himself, Howard Dean --

AUDIENCE: Booo!

THE VICE PRESIDENT: Just wait, it gets better. (Laughter.)

He said the capture of Saddam Hussein did not make America any safer. And maybe it should be no surprise that such a party would turn its back on a man like Senator Joe Lieberman, who has been an unapologetic supporter in the fight against terror. (Applause.)

Instead they highlight people like John Kerry --

AUDIENCE: Booo!

THE VICE PRESIDENT: I told you it would get better.

He was their nominee, their presidential nominee in 2004, the titular head of the Democratic Party. Aren't we lucky he lost that election? (Applause.) You remember John Kerry -- the senator who voted for the $87 billion before he voted against it, the guy that was always lecturing us about "nuance." He's the one, you'll recall, who last year said that American soldiers were terrorizing children in Iraq.

And just this week he took another swipe at the U.S. military. Here's what he said, word for word: "You know education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

AUDIENCE: Booo!

THE VICE PRESIDENT: Of course, Senator Kerry said he was just making a joke, and he botched it up. I guess we didn't get the nuance. (Laughter.) Actually, he was for the joke before he was against it. (Laughter and applause.)

This humor stuff, it really doesn't have to be that complicated.

with all his words over the past 3 years or so.

To whine more about people making fun of him is only going to make it worse.

Gee, I am starting to think Kerry's remarks did not really happen. After all, there is no mention of them on the NYT front page. How could that possibly occur and what does it indicate?

The paper of "All the intelligence secrets fit to divulge" and ever decreasing circulation seems to have overlooked the story.

The also missed the Vice President's remarks. My goodness, I am terribly vexed, someone help me out.

Do you think any of this will be lost on voters? Don't count on it. Some Hawkish independent friends of mine previously unsure if they would be voting now want to be first on line.

Thanks for the turnout help John.

"Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori"

I don't know - for some reason these JFK (Kennedy) quotes keep resonating. Here's the latest one I discovered:

"I don't think the intelligence reports are all that hot. Some days I get more out of the New York Times." – John F. Kennedy

History repeats itself. History repeats itself.

a poor one, but I am willing to go on record to say that Cheney wouldn't have screwed up the delivery.

As for the story being in the papers, it may have missed the NYT but it was on the front page of our local paper, and our local paper isn't anymore conservative than the NYT (my paper's editorial page will run a couple of conservativeish opinion pieces over the course of the week and call that balance).

Those humorous remarks from the VP were given at a Republican rally yesterday in Kalispell, Montana that I had the privilege to attend. We all enjoyed it, and yes, the joke is Kerry!
