Jim Webb Pee'd On Reagan. Now Wants To Use Him.
Called Reagan A Coward And Now Hides Behind Him

We reported earlier that Nancy Reagan is calling on Jim Webb to stop using her husband's image to promote his campaign as a Surrendercrat for the United States Senate.
Let's review, shall we?
After 10 months, Jim Webb resigned as Reagan's Navy Secretary. Webb told the New York Times that he could not "live inside the [Reagan] administration."
In 1988, Jim Webb gave a speech at the National Press Club in which he broke ranks with the Reagan Administration on its very successful policy of dealing with the Soviet Union. While the Reagan administration was pursuing an arms buildup to force the Soviet hand, Webb was out demanding cuts in American military strength in Europe.
Also in 1988, Jim Webb went on record opposing President Reagan's Persian Gulf policy. On April 24, 1988, in the Albany Times Union, Webb wrote an opinion piece highly critical of President Reagan. Webb called the Reagan administration cowardly and also wrote, among other things,
The American Navy has operated with exceptional skill in the Persian Gulf, despite the administration's introduction of an unwieldy and in some cases inappropriate force structure, and despite its hesitance to use its forces as other than diplomatic symbols, floating targets that are invitations to an international incident
Jim Webb opposed the Reagan administration's Soviet policies, policies on Japan, European policies, and Persian Gulf policies. Now he wants to hide behind President Reagan? That's too much. Jim Webb must be defeated.

As I recall, there was some animosity between Nancy and Jimmy -- like she didn't appreciate his whole Smartest Guy at the Big Oval Table act. She was always hellcat-defensive of the Gipper, it seemed to me.

If you thought that was bad, you should see my blog.
I don't get it, he's a candidate that is trying to be a right winger and promoting himself using President Reagan. Could you imagine if Lieberman had Reagan in a commercial?? Now I understand why he does it, and can't blame him. Tom Kean (R-NJ) has a quote from Robert Kennedy on his facebook. It's a push for bipartisanship by using a President from too long ago for people to think partisan about. While I can't complain about Webb trying to appear conservative in a state of conservatives, I do wonder what is behind Kos and his major endorsements of Jim Webb.
I googled Webb and Zinni some time ago. There's a link in that they matriculated as Junior Marine Officers together. I'm still mystified as to the motivation of those Generals who were calling for Rumsfeld's head a few months ago. There's something under the surface and I suspect Webb's connected.
Webb was right. Reagan’s defense policy was pusillanimous. But that was the best thing Reagan did for national security: he gave Gorby reason to believe the U.S. & NATO would remain passive and peaceful should the USSR reduce its military commitments and reform. Reagan also raised taxes more than any previous president and let foreigners loot our domestic markets and industries. But we loved him, because he made us feel good.
It sure would be great to get beyond the ridiculous notion that there are only two views of things Dem or GOP. But that would take critical thinking and analysis. Sure it's a lot easier to wave the flag and parrot the party line, but does it truly serve our country?
Now you don't have to think about it! That's great if thinking is not your forte. No really, can you only imagine that there are only two world views? Really, I want to know if you will put that in print. Or maybe you don't believe it, but don't have anything intelligent to say?
Your thinking is stuck in the Reagan box. Democrats are stuck in the McGovern box. Meanwhile, decades have gone by in which to gather empirical information, scientific advances, and time too, to study history. You have your apocalypse, the Dem's have their's and I think you're all whack.
I have always thought of Liberals as egotistical, spendthrift 'do gooders.' Sound like an administration you know? One that cannot deal openly and honestly with its own citizens, unable to admit error, unable to manage the public funds entrusted to them, trying to change the world in its latest crazy iteration. You, are the Liberal party loyalist.
I thought about warning you, but a review of your comments showed that would be a waste of my time and energy.
I thought about a witty sendoff, but you haven't been original enough to merit it.
So: Goodbye.

Here I asked for it and you let me go on posting, but some newbie with (it seems) a vast, unstoppable political movement all to himself gets banned before you can say "Perot".

The Presidency is a position more easily critiqued than attained.
released hostages out of fear of Reagan and cut tax rates, respectivelly.
waving the flag and parroting a party line that is correct policy serves the country well
grenada, qadafy, missiles to europe, huge defense build up, star wars, aid to the contras gave gorby comfort?

The demobats are unerring in choosing the wrong. It has to do with the fact that the left is devoid of core moral values and no longer can recognize right. Reagan won the Cold War, Carter won the Rabbit War. Bush I freed Kuwait, Bush II freed Afghanistan and Iraq, Big Willy freed his little willy. The Dims run A. E Newman, Tank Commander, Al "I invented the Internet" Gore and John Froggie Koward and can't figure out how they lost. Yep, the White Flag Party has a lot to be proud of.
Envisioning when all that is Left is the Right.
This is worth two gold stars.
Reagan won the Cold War, Carter won the Rabbit War. Bush I freed Kuwait, Bush II freed Afghanistan and Iraq, Big Willy freed his little willy.

Oh this is good: Conservatives whining about a politician telling a half truth. I guess you guys just want your politicians to be bold faced liars! Get over it.
Nancy doesn`t own her husbands image on film. He said those words and Webb has every right to use them. The republicans have nothing to complaign about except that maybe they are scared of a candidate that can take out allen!
It's like this guy's Pro America 1st with a goatee. One doggedly tells us to donate, the other does his best to make us give up all hope.

Webb was always going to lose, but this cinches it.

don`t get the goatee comment.actually i think webb shouldn`t run the ad now out of respect to nancy, plus the dc media has been showing the ad for free. Much ado about nothing, Reagan praised one of his staff but getting the endorsement of a dead man is a little tacky.

It was a poor choice by Webb to run the ad for two reasons.
First, Mrs. Reagan did not want the ad to air. Who cares why. This just makes the Webb campaign look like evil villains in the eves of the public for disregarding the wishes of a widow of perhaps the greatest president of our generation.
Second, for those who don't live in Va, this gives the Allen campaign the go ahead to attack Webb who up to this point has relied on third party operatives to spead venom about Allen. Up to this point Webb seemed like a genuinely nice guy. Sen. Allen can now publically denounce Webb without the fear of possible backlash. Sen. Allen's campaign needed a boost and they certainly got it with Webb's major mistake. If Webb goes ahead and runs the ad it will not be a pretty sight when these guys debate next week on national TV.

Who'da thunk Nancy Reagan would weigh in to help a conservative Republican who isn't her husband? Granted, she's defending the use of her husband's good name and image, but still. I would have thought she would be pulling for Webb to win his election against George Allen.
Good for Nancy.
