Nancy Reagan to Jim Webb: Don't Hide Behind My Husband

Surrendercrat Must Stop Using Reagan's Image

Jim Webb, running as a Democrat against George Allen in Virginia's Senate race has decided to use footage from 1985 of President Reagan praising Webb in a television commercial.

The 30-second ad opens with video of Reagan praising Webb during a commencement address at the U.S. Naval Academy in 1985, when Reagan was president and Webb, a Navy grad, was an assistant secretary of defense.

"James' gallantry as a Marine in Vietnam won him the Navy Cross and other decorations," Reagan says on the video.

Today, however, Nancy Reagan strenuously objected. Considering Webb abandoned the party of Reagan for the party of surrender, it's no wonder Mrs. Reagan felt compelled to object.

The funny thing is, if you check out Webb's website, he is clearly trying to hide the fact that he is a Democrat. His issue statements are innocuous statements ever to come from a federal political campaign. Webb tries to avoid taking positions on any topic from taxes to social welfare programs, with the exception of Iraq, where he is clearly on the side of cutting and running -- a position President Reagan would abhor.

I think the Republicans should press this point hard, especially since Webb has made everything he could of the 'macacca' comment. The man seems to be very unprincipled, so why don't we get Nancy Reagan in an Allen commercial denouncing Webb's shady tactics?

It's just a thought.

I rarely watch the local Washington DC news (I live in Arlington, VA) - five minutes of the stuff and I'm ready to slit my throat - so I was shocked when the locals did a fair job on Nancy Reagan cutting Jim Webb off. Republicans and conservatives are usually kicked around by the local pressies (WaPo notably of course) and Nancy Reagan usually only appears when she's bashing some GOP or conservative so this was an unusual moment.
I suspect that the local MSM really doesn't like or trust Webb. They have been rather skeptical in much of their reporting. One might almost say they've been playing it straight - or as straight as one could ever hope for. Even "macaca" never gained much traction locally outside the WaPo.
It would be a miracle if Nancy Reagan cut an ad for Allen. She just isn't the type. But one can hope.
