Shelley Sekula-Gibbs Appears To Have Done It

I've been on the Bob Smither bandwagon for a while now, but it's time to promote the Republican in the race, it would seem.

With President Bush headed to Texas to campaign for Ms. Sekula-Gibbs, it is worth pointing out this.

The Republican write-in effort to hold former Rep. Tom DeLay's congressional seat, once viewed as a long shot, has created a tight race, according to a Houston Chronicle-11 News poll.

Thirty-five percent of respondents said they would vote for a write-in candidate, a statistical tie with the 36 percent support for Democrat Nick Lampson, according to the poll of more than 500 likely voters in the 22nd Congressional District.

Most who say they will write in a candidate plan on naming Shelley Sekula-Gibbs, the Houston city councilwoman backed by the Republican Party. Two lesser-known candidates also are running as write-ins.

One voter in four is still undecided.

Libertarian Bob Smither, the only person besides Lampson on the general election ballot, drew 4 percent support.

According to this independent poll, Bob isn't going to pull it out. It's of utmost importance that we do what must be done to hold the seat. If people really are willing to write in Shelley Sekula-Gibbs, so much the better.

Finally, you've come around. I was just going to link to the story. Vote for Shelley, and abandon the Smither idea. She can do it.

It seemed your earlier view was that given the choice between a libertarian and a Democrat, you'd prefer the Libertarian (as would most sane people). But now I'm glad you realize that was a false choice. The real choice does include a Republican in a Republican district.

It seems the R's down there aren't going to let a rogue prosecutor steal a house seat from them!

All along I felt that Republican districts were going to hold. I see no reason for voters to switch to Democratic party. Based on what? All the Democrats have done is run around saying "Bush is bad" and "Iraq is a disaster". What is their plan? So many pundits have tried to compare this election cycle to 1994. Based on what? The GOP had a plan, the Contract with America. Moreover, 1994 was the culmination of a re-alignment in the South that started under Nixon. The only re-alignment I see is more African-Americans voting for the GOP in the state of Maryland.

I live ehre, and I cannot tellyou how anti-DNC people in CD22 are. They know Delay was shoved out due to dems dirty politics.
They know Lampson is a union organizing extremist carpet bagger, sent in to colonize the district.
Shelly is a physician, a reasonable person, very bright, and a good conservative. The real story is how this puts in the ditch the lies the MSM has been pushing on behalf of their collleagues, the DNC. Where else in America are people this ticked off at the defeatocrat, dhimmicrat stance of Pelosi, Murtha, etc.?
I thinkthis election may have some surprises ahead for the dems.

I've written a few times about it being a pain to dial in a write-in. But if all that's needed is to enter GIBBS then it's easy enough. Entering her whole name would be a killer.

That is the question I have. If someone writes Gibbs, is that enough. If it is then the whole write-in campaign should be focused on the word "Gibbs". Does anyone know if this is allowed?

If she wins, the Dems will sue about the name and if she loses, the GOP will sue about the name.

Also, the county clerks have said that they only need to be able to discern voter intent. Thus Gibbs, Sekula, Shelley and Sekula Gibbs will all count for Shelley.

to house all the lawyers should "Write-in" beat out Lampson?

It definitely seems like reason will prevail in TX-22. There is no reason why a liberal Dem like Lampson should win a GOP bastion like TX-22 except that a grand-jury-shopping prosecutor in the People's Republic of Austin managed to get an indictment against Tom DeLay on his third try.

If President Bush is going down there to campaign for Sekula-Gibbs, all he has to do is make clear that voters need to WRITE HER NAME IN for the 2007-08 session as well as vote for her in the lame-duck session. President Bush might only have 40% approval nationally, but he's still VERY popular in Texas, and he could easily sway most of the "one quarter of undecided voters" to write in Sekula-Gibbs.

Lampson is only at 36%, one point ahead of a WRITE-IN candidate who will soon get a Presidential endorsement less than two weeks before the election? Lampson will probably be a forgotten man after November 8, 2006...

How about ten syllables: Congresswoman Shelley Sekula-Gibbs!

The bad news: Conservatism is hard to sell. The good news is that it works.

Spread this link to folks who live in Texas' CD22. It clearly show how to write in Shelley, http://www.writeshelley.com/

i was willing to give the serious RNC officials credit when you posted that they had that race dead last as winnable.

i am glad to hear they are wrong as i personally asked our tax assessor, who is known for being able to call local races better than anybody; at our young republicans meeting 2 weeks ago which races we should focus on and he said then that shelly's race was winnable.

so, don't give up 22 yet ! we may just pull it out.

Conservatives should have learned the Perot lesson 10 years ago. No big government conservatives, however, a big government Republican is preferable to a Democrat. No third party until the Democratic Party implodes. 4% in a poll and he is on the ballot. If the Republicans hold Delay's and Foley's seats than they will be in the majority next year. One more very interesting week.

Reason #186,369,352 not to be tossed and swayed by every poll that is released for the next week. We need to focus on helping the R's win the races!

Erick, glad to welcome you back "on the reservation" as it were. :)

Over at National Review, they have some other good news about this poll:

"That GOP strength of the district was evident when poll respondents were asked specifically about Sekula-Gibbs and Lampson. In that case, Sekula-Gibbs drew 52% support with Lampson holding at 35%."

If this wasn't a write-in campaign, Sekula-Gibbs would coast into the House. All the dialing the wheels makes it harder.

The "writeshelley.com" site looks excellent, but maybe the GOP should send out mailers to known Republican voters in TX-22, similar to the one I got from the Lieberman campaign here in Connecticut. They showed a chart of the way the ballot appears, with the Senate race in the second column, with a row at the bottom labeled "Connecticut for Lieberman". At the intersection of the row and column, they showed "Joe" in red letters, circled, with a big red arrow pointing to the circle.

How about a mailer with appropriate instructions for GOP voters in TX-22, that they could take to the voting booths? Especially for GOP voters who don't go online for election information...

The bad news: Conservatism is hard to sell. The good news is that it works.

Although he could discount this poll.

We will just have to see what the Nov. 7th poll shows up as. As a write in... this isn't going to be known immediately either.

GOP should have done a big absentee push on this one. Give people the tools to do the write in on the absentee ballot... not much of a difference (and presumably less 'pressure' to write the name in correctly).

I wonder how much of a legal challenge there will be if someone doesn't write the name in absolutely correctly. The Dems would be making all sorts of cases for things to get accepted if it was their candidate. Something tells me they will challenge every single ballot on this one for some reason...
