Stabenow Helps Illegal Immigrants But Not Michigan Residents

Debbie Stabenow's record in the United States Senate is very unusual. She has done very, very little to help the people of Michigan recover from the Granholm-Stabenow recession, but she has done lots of things to help illegal immigrants.
On May 18, 2006, Sen. Stabenow voted to allow illegal immigrants to collect social security from work done prior to being assigned a valid social security number. Senator Jim DeMint said "It makes no sense to reward millions of illegal immigrants for criminal behavior while our social security system is already in crisis," but that did not persuade Senator Stabenow.
One day earlier, on May 17, 2006, Senator Stabenow said "I think we need to secure the borders as soon as possible." She even voted to require the Department of Homeland Security to certify that our borders were secure prior to enactment of other immigration reforms. But, curiously, just one month before she did that, Sen. Stabenow voted to block a bill that would have mandated additional fencing and technology to close the border.

Also on May 17, 2006, Senator Stabenow voted to require employers to certify that their immigrant workers will have jobs prior to the immigrants getting visas. The very next day Senator Stabenow voted to gut that provision. According to Martin Kady, II, in CQ Today:
On May 17, Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan jilted her fellow Democrats on an immigration measure and ended up being a swing vote for a Republican amendment that was adopted, 50-48. But the very next morning, Stabenow found an easier pill to swallow on the issue of green cards and jobs for immigrants. She ended up voting for a Democratic amendment that essentially overturned some of the more controversial provisions of the GOP measures she had backed the night before.
Senator Stabenow has flipped and flopped as much as John Kerry on the war. It's time for MIchigan voters to flip her out of the Senate.
