Theocratic Candidates Bent on Destroying the Constitution

Have These People no respect for the first amendment?

In the middle of a tightly contested Senate race, a United States Senate Candidate and a sitting United States Senator went to mega-church yesterday, and campaigned to the churchgoers there. During the course of this campaigning, these dangerous theocrats suggested that God wanted them to win their campaign:

The fact that they are still in the race despite the odds, [the candidate] told a[...] crowd at Mount Zion Baptist Church here, was evidence that "we got something else at work."

"I think the [candidate] said something wise -- we got another manager in this race," [the sitting United States Senator] told the group.

Clearly, these Theocrat wanna-bes are engaging in rank religious pandering, and are willing to sell our country down the river to a bunch of people who just want to force everyone to worship the way that they do. I fully expect Andrew Sullivan and John Cole to condemn this reprehensible and dangerous behavior.

Except, they probably won't, because in this case, the candidate and the Senator are Harold Ford Jr. and Barack Obama. Who are Democrats. So, in this case, it's okay.

If a Republican goes to church, that's okay, but if a Democrat goes to church, it isn't?

That makes no sense.

Also, how is this "destroying" the Constitution? If you want to talk about "destroying" the Constitution, take a look at the 4th Amendment (no wiretaps without a warrant) and Art. I, Sec. 9 (can't suspend habeas corpus except on temporary circumstances), both of which were completely disregarded by our Republican Congress. Hope that helps.

10, 9, 8, 7, 6....

Yes, because I criticize our government, I MUST be liberal.

Come on, DEMOCRACY by definition means debate. It is very American. For some reason we all seem to have forgotten this.

...you MUST be a liberal because you joined up a day before a crucial midterm, started babbling the usual Democratic talking points and registered using mailinator.

That's what we call diagnostic, around here.

But I'm in a cheerful mood, this morning, so tell you what: you can have a second chance. Don't try to con us further and you can stay.

Why am I conning you? Have I done anything deceiving?

I used mailinator because I don't want my regular email sold to marketers. I think many people on this forum would agree that using a separate email account is "ok."

I've got all day, friend.

...because it looks like you folks purely hate it when the shoe's on the other foot. Good. Now go to some Lefty site and go lecture them; they're the ones who really need it.

PS: As to your third paragraph... (shrug). Assertion ain't proof, neighbor.

Here is a story
that is being covered pretty heavily. Anytime any sort of Republican is seen near anything to do with Christianity, we get these stupid stories about Republicans are in bed with the church and are one step away from a theocracy.

Here in MN the Star Tribune was attacking the Republican candidate for MN-06, Michelle Bachmann, because she said some remarks similar to what those to Dems made. The story was picked up nationally, and it was used to whip the morons over at Dkos in a fervor.

The point isn't that we don't approve of Dems being associated with Christianity, what we don;t approve of is the glaring hypocrisy and double standard.

If you really are a 2lt, you should be smart enough to pick up on that.

Oh, and Moe's point about you being a liberal (something no one accused you of) is right on.

Evil prevails only when good men do nothing.

I DON'T approve of Democrats being associated with Christianity.
Let's see, the party of slavery, jim crow, socialism, abortion, euthanasia, cloning, and appeasement. Yeah, that seems like nothing I want associated with my religion.

...It shows how, despite an impending takeover of the house (and/or senate) the Dems have no answer for social conservatism in the long term except to begin cultivating their most charismatic up-n-comers to exploit this issue.

That said, I wish we'd get out of the church business all together. They can have it.

ex. Krazy Katherine Harris down in FL.

You sre right about the hypocricy. Both parties need to stay away from campaigning in churches and making faith and religion a partisan issue.

Churches are getting in trouble with their tax-exempt status for preaching about abortion, but Harold Ford can campaign in a church? Am I missing something here?

about abortion. If they campaign for a particular candidate or party, then they should lose their tax exempt status. If they simply speak about their core values, they will be fine.

Black churches are exempt from the establishment clause.

takeing out his anger over churches going against him that a church would lose it's tax exempt status.
If the dems would ever make a place for social conservitives (which they never will) they would probably win more the so called Christian Right vote.

There are all sorts of tax exempt groups out there which are arms of political parties. MoveOn, for example. Or CREW. Or the unions. If they can engage in politics and retain their tax exempt status then so should churches.

exempt any of them from taxation if they engage in politics? Actually, and I know this will get me flamed on this board, I don't churches should be tax exempt at all. Providing a tax break for churches and for contributions to church is tantamount to shifting the tax burden to those who don't go to church.

The Constitutionally correct answer was to not have an income tax on anybody. Even if they were exercising their rights to free association, free speech, and free exercise thereof at the little white building on Sunday mornings and Sunday and Wednesday nights.

However, we are stuck with the 16th amendment...for now.

national discussion of the Fair Tax until the end of the war in Iraq.

that is a bad thought or just change the 16th ammendment

Don't tinker with the First Amendment. That way madness lies.

Churches was where all pols went to help make thier case. Now that they are always under threat they are skiddish to speak out about any issue and this should not be. All through out our history the church was always one of many places people went to discuss on how people and policy would effect them.
The founding fathers wanted to keep the state out of the church not the church out of the state.

I would think you would be happy to see Democrats getting some religion. In fairness, can't speak to Ford's credentials, but my take on Obama is that he's very sincere in his faith.

And yes, I caught the sarcasm :-).

Gone to lurking for some time now, but I still keep up around here. Good luck tomorrow, Leon, you guys going to need every bit of the vaunted ground game to avoid some serious bloodletting. I've got some wine from my 2004 election party I've been saving for what I hope to be at least a pretty good day for us donks...we'll see.

The devil take order now! I'll to the throng:
Let life be short; else shame will be too long.

May you be disappointed... in the election. I'm not heartless enough to hope ill things of your wine (I've got a couple of bottles from the wedding that I've been likewise keeping close guard upon). :)

mentality.

This is just another example.

I think one reason they don't condemn this behavior is that to attack/condemn would make their whole "GOP is arm of the theocrats blah blah blah" meme look like the trash that it really is.
