Where's Tammy?
Duckworth Keeps Ducking Debates

Tammy Duckworth was the "it" girl for American politics this year. A veteran from the Iraq War who lost her legs when her Blackhawk helicopter was struck by an RPG, she returned home to run as a lefty netroots candidate. Her story was so compelling, the party elders in Washington and the netroots worked to force out Christine Cegelis, Duckworth's primary opponent. Cegelis, unlike Duckworth, actually lives in Illinois's 6th Congressional District and was the nominee 2 years ago against Henry Hyde.
This year, Peter Roskam is running to replace retiring Congressman Henry Hyde. Mr. Roskam has been showing up for debates against Ms. Duckworth, but Ms. Duckworth apparently can't be bothered to show up. He showed up in Addison, but Duckworth ducked that debate. He showed up in Elmhurst yesterday and Duckworth ducked that debate. Elmhurst is the largest community in the district.
Two years ago, Christine Cegelis went head to head against Henry Hyde debating him across the district, including in Elmhurst at the same forum Roskam went to last night. But Duckworth keeps ducking debates. It's like she thinks she should not have to work for the seat because she's Tammy Duckworth, injured veteran and netroots hero. Maybe she just got lost; it's not like she's actually from the district.

and could not find anywhere where she designated herself as a democrat. i did find it under the press tab, in an article written by someone else...but that was an indirect reference.
does anyone know whether she gives a 'heads up' to the debate organizers, or just totally stiffs them?
That the whole Lamont/Lieberman thing has her bothered and she may be trying to Throw the election.
She's a Veteran. Yes, she's against the war in Iraq. But she is Not anti-military (or at least has shown no signs of it yet). Lamont and the wing of the Democratic Party that supports him are Vehemently and Loudly anti-military, and she may have decided, consiously or unconsiously, that she wants no part of it.
While the Major media outlets won't say anything about it, you can Bet the local media will talk about her failing to appear at the debates. And the audience will spread the word. If she continues to avoid them, she won't win.

The "Trib" and the Sun-Times seem disinterested in Duckworth skipping out and running a stealth campaign, not telling people who she really is and hoping the fawning national press coverage will carry her over the line without her ever having to explain herself to the locals. If I am msising some local media that is hammering her, please let me know.
Also, if I am not mistaken, recent polling shows Roksam up a few points. My source is electionprojection.com
my last post. The papers may mention it grudgingly, but they don't make it above the fold material for multiple days, and the op-ed writers aren't beating the drum daily. When was the last time Steve Chapman of the Trib devoted his column to that?
That's her problem. And she may not be a quick study--her other problem--and why she won't debate.
Seems to me Roskam has this one tied up regardless of debates. Anyone else agree with that assessment?
I am friendly with a Democratic state senator and, in his opinion, it is a Republican district and Duckworth doesn't have a chance. He also has a reasonably high regard for Roskam.

I've heard similar things from both sides of the aisle on Roskam as well along with the district still being a Republican stronghold in the Chi Suburbs.
If you go out to her issues page and the press release page tere is nothing there. Its all bush is evil, blah blah blah hes killing our future, blah blah the war has endangered us drive an alternative fueled vehicle.
She doesn't even bother to proclaim her party affiliation. The whole page seems structured to not offend. It succeeds in not offending but only by not saying anything. The only thing I take from the page is that she feels she is annointed and will win if she doesn't blunder.
"Maybe she just got lost; it's not like she's actually from the district."
Hoffman Estates where Duckworth lives is in both districts from what I have read, how far is she from the district line? I think I read somewhere that part of the reason she did not move was the customization of her home to accommodate her injuries.
I've also browsed her campaign web site, she did not come across as a wild eyed Liberal by the way.
I worked with Ladda Duckworth for one year. Yes, Ladda. Keep your real name, or change it. We don’t need to call you by your nickname Tammy. Like, "Scooter" Libby?
Ladda came to Rotary International in Evanston after I was there for six months or so. The woman was a walking hurricane. She had to talk fast, and over you, and had no time to listen. I mean really listen. I had a bad feeling about her, but everyone at Rotary loved her. How could they not? She would talk to you like she just read Carnegie's book. She would make you feel like you were her best friend, BUT, she really wasn't listening to you. Very phony. I can spot phony 1,000 miles away.
So we go out for lunch one day as a group, and she spent the whole time monopolizing the conversation. She wouldn't shut up. Then she starts on about her Honda CR-V. Well, I started to talk with her about my having a CR-V too.
She didn't even look, or listen to me. I HAD A CRV TOO! It didn't matter. I was an administrative person. She didn't need anything from me, so I was useless to her. And she made me feel that way by not even looking at me. And who knows, maybe she didn't even hear me. It’s possible. Because she wouldn't stop talking, and, she talked loudly and clearly so as to not give anyone a chance to jump in.
She did the same thing in the debates last spring. She was on WLS Channel 7, and she kept interrupting everyone. Even the moderator! I was at home doing dishes while watching her, and I was steaming the dishes enough with my frustration at her non-answers to the direct questions.
My advice to her is to run in her own district, and make those phony connections in her own town. Unless she’s afraid of something. And if she is, then she's a perfect politician because they can't stop running for fear of letting it all catch up to them.

the debates as we speak. WIll WAPO have it as their above the fold article 2 days in a row? Will the Chicago Tribune?
Seriously, we know where this is headed She'll dodge the debates and rely on free campaign air time from WGN and the Trib. And if anybody dares to question her not living in the district or ducking debates, she'll pull a Kerry and just say, "How dare you criticize me?"
