Bad News For John Breaux

Former Louisiana citizen John Breaux, now a citizen of the State of Maryland, wants to run for Governor of his former state. Unfortunately for Breaux, Louisiana requires that its Governors be citizens for the previous five years. Breaux, once he left the U.S. Senate, immediately renounced his Louisiana citizenship in favor of Maryland, where he has lived for some time with a job inside the District of Columbia.
Hoping to do an end run around Louisiana's Constitution, Breaux asked his friend Charles Forti, the Louisiana Attorney General, to issue an opinion that Breaux was still a citizen of Louisiana. Forti, however, was not willing to spit on the Louisiana Constitution, thus distinguishing himself from nearly every other Democrat in Louisiana.
Of course Forti also did not want to tell his friend John Breaux "No," so today he has released his opinion stating that he "must refrain from rendering an opinion" because the matter will surely be litigated.
It took the Attorney General eight pages to say that.

We are all heroes, you and Boo and I. Hamsters and rangers everywhere, rejoice!
Between poll numbers, Jindal's fundraising and this, Breaux will not run.

. . . one year after the biggest Republican ass-kicking since '74, we could end up winning three Gov elections (if Northrup beats Fletcher). I don't believe in "bellweathers" but it will help morale.

The GOP winning all three governors races in 2007, two of which are just holds, in states that Bush carried by an average of 17 points in 2004 isn't something to do backflips over.
Bobby Jindal the person winning the governorship in Louisiana will absolutely be something to do many backflips over.
"I will have more to say about the statement and the Governor's race in the coming days.
I was hopeful that the Attorney General would have been able to issue an opinion on my qualifications to run for Governor."
I bet you were, Senator. Now you can't play the "count every vote/opposing Democracy card."
I wonder if Foti is buds with Lt. Gov. Landrieu, who has indicated that he'll run if Breaux doesn't. This could be serious pass-the-popcorn time.
The AG refusing to opine probably just means he knows the answer and it isn't the one his masters want. So, he's kicking it to the courts; they'll do anything, and there's not much anyone can do about a state SC decision if it doesn't involve a federal question.

But they're elected, so it is more complicated in a state like Louisiana, which is behind the rest of the South in terms of realignment.
Didn't the Louisiana state Supreme Court reinstate the marriage amendment after some lower court tried to throw it out and crap all over the people who had passed it with something like 76%?
If so, then that is a good sign.
That's my first thought upon hearing this news...
OTOH, maybe it's a face-saving way for Breaux to exit stage right after testing the waters & finding out he might get his butt kicked.
Attaboy, Charlie!
If New Jersey could do it, Louisiana should have zero compunctions about pulling a Lautenberg.
Erick,
Just to quibble, but it's important....
"Former Louisiana citizen John Breaux, now a citizen of the State of Maryland...."
I believe that you meant to say that he's a former legal resident of Louisiana and now a legal resident of Maryland, but regardless a citizen of the United States of America. :-)

Okay, so "Wow" isn't such a great comment, but it really sums this up. This is the last thing I expected, as well as (I suspect) the last thing Breaux suspected. Not good for the Breaux campaign.
