NAACP May Take Out Southern Democrat For Perceived Racial Slur

Dartez (D) story may have legs

Today, word comes that State Rep. Dartez (D-LA) may resign over an allegedly racist slur she made to a civil rights leader in Louisiana.

Louisiana State Representative Carla Dartez [(D)] is considering resigning after allegedly referring to the mother of an NAACP president as "Buckwheat," a Houma newspaper reported Friday.

Buried at the bottom of the story, we learn that Dartez (D) has other problems in her re-election bid. In September, Dartez (D) hit a pedestrian with her car. In the same month, her husband was charged with employing and harboring illegal aliens.

With Rep. Jefferson's (D-LA) well-known corruption ($90,000 of marked bills in his freezer and using Katrina relief equipment to get his bribe money out of his house after the storm) and the Louisiana Democrats corrupt history, it is not really a surprise to find a Democrat with questionable character running here.

The state representative election is on November 17th between Dartez and Republican Joe Harrison. The jungle primary gave Dartez 44% and Harrison 36% with other Ds splitting the other 20%.

The local head of the NAACP, a former Dartez (D) supporter, has said:

he has now informed Dartez he is no longer supporting her. "I will do everything in my power to see that she's not re-elected"

If Dartez drops out of the campaign, is it an automatic win for Harrison?

It happened already this year with Commissioner of Agriculture Bob Odom, even though he placed first in the primary. Mike Strain (R) is the winner, and the other two R's who challenged Odom are SOL.

And Edwin Edwards dropped out in 1987 after placing second to Buddy Roemer (R), giving Roemer the governorship even though only 33% had voted for him in the primary.

So, yeah, I know of no mechanism to have do-overs. If one candiate quits, that's it, as far as I know.

I've been working as a poll commissioner for every election since the storm (New Orleans) so I know exactly what happens.

If she drops out, each polling place will receive a notice that reads "Notice of candidate withdrawal. The below listed candidate has withdrawn and any votes cast for that candidate will not be counted" followed by the candidate's name. We have to post it prominently, I just tape them to the table where the voter has to sign in.

If she drops out soon, the sheet will be in the voting machine when they open up. If too late for that, then a sheriff's deputy brings it by.

still slinging racial slurs.

That was an incredibly stupid thing to say to a supporter, much less one so connected to the CRM. It kinda makes you wonder just what in the heck it is they think but don't say.

You're making quite a leap of faith that they think in the first place.

...uh, Eddie Murphy made her do it.

She may be a Democrat, and quite frankly I am enjoying watching one of them suffering politically for this type of faux pas for a change ... but this idea that her use of "Buckwheat" (just how idiotic is this Dartez lady, anyway?) means that she is no different from David Duke is really not something we should be endorsing.

I have to grudgingly agree.

If it's going to be the official Republican position (and it should be) that the PC Police and the Professional Offended Class have just gone overboard and we should fight it, then at least we should not celebrate the overblown reaction to this minor faux pas. And yes, what an idiot! Buckwheat was a GUY, right?

Actually, when the Buckwheat character was first created, it was a female despite the fact that the actor was a boy. Then they made the character a boy, but not at first.

This makes me think of a joke (which I can't imagine anyone would be offended by, but if I'm just clueless, then sorry in advance)

What did Buckwheat change his name to when he grew up and became a Muslim?

Kareem of Wheat!

I can't believe you told that one!

Absolutely. I am doing my best to just report what is going on and not try to encourage it. If I failed in doing that, I regret that.

I call the quip "allegedly racist" b/c that is what the NAACP is alleging. Further, the candidate herself is acting as if she did something terribly wrong. And the NAACP has chosen to effectively throw their support behind the Republican.

I will admit it is nice to see the Democrat did not get a "pass" on a comment that would get a Republican grilled. "Macaca" was on the Washington Post front page about a dozen times for one word. We'll see if the Times-Picayune gives this similar treatment. I doubt it. But at least the NAACP is being somewhat consistent.
