Why Faisal Gill May Hurt the Virginia GOP

I asked a couple of weeks ago if we should be concerned by Faisal Gill's candidacy for the Virginia House of Delegates. I was stunned by the phone calls I received.

The short answer is yes. To see for yourself, just google Faisal Gill.

In a state where the GOP is clinging to power, barely, Mr. Gill has a very questionable background -- from ties to a man indicted on terrorism charges to his law partner allegedly leaking the NSA wire tap program to rumors that Mr. Gill himself has filed legal challenges on behalf of Gitmo detainees (I can't find anything on that, but several lawyers report that is a very credible rumor). While I'd be willing to admit these rumors could be character assassination, there are a lot of serious people seriously concerned.

The most troubling thing is that Virginia's campaign finance rules allow pretty much unlimited contributions and Mr. Gill has raked in a lot of contributions. While we should expect and not be troubled by a minority ethnic community supporting its own, a growing number of Virginians are concerned -- particularly because the Virginia Democrats are already hoping to destroy the Virginia GOP with Mr. Gill's candidacy.

You see, Mr. Gill has spread his wealth around and gotten a number of prominent endorsements. The Virginia Democrats have already been public about how they intend to tie Mr. Gill's questionable ties to alleged terrorists to those Republicans who endorsed him.

Today is the last day to be a delegate that the relevant convention where the Republican nominee for the 51st House of Delegates seat will be chosen. The last Republican seat in Northern Virginia hangs in the balance with Mr. Gill's potential nomination.

They are going to attack vis-a-vis the muslim connection, now while that might work for us rednecks in VA for trying to persuade the other white "racists" in our party how bad he is, the liberal elite muslims and even perhaps CAIR shall find it alarmingly racist of the Dems, I say let them have at it. I will be the first to contact CAIR when they start:)

you know, white-flag-waving, McCain-buddy Warner? White-flag Tom Davis, who thinks he can hold his Fairfax seat by backing surrender? George Allen, the moron hick who gave away the Senate through pure incompetence? oh and i forgot that idiot who is pretending to run for Prez right now, the guy who lied about the car tax? Gilmore.

i'd say we're pretty screwed in VA as is. get ready for a tidal wave of blue here in 2008. a real shame because this is a great state. sadly, our prosperity drew in too many clueless yuppies. at least there's Virgil Goode, one of the few guys that has a clue about Islam

the Washington Pravda has VA in a death grip. their attacks on Allen - from Macaca to Sabato to "outing" his mom as a Jew - were totally ridiculous, yet the public ate them up like starving dogs. VA will be a total disaster for the GOP in 2008

That should be the straw, if it really surfaces. Sure wish the public had more info on that one!
First an NSA wire tap connection, now this? Please give us more info, we need to alert his convention delegates.

You seem to be misled by his opponents who are pulling out all the stops because Faisal has strong support and they are trying anything to tear his delegates away before it's over.

I'll address your stuff point by point:

- "from ties to a man indicted on terrorism charges"

Gill has NO ties to a man indicted on terrorism charges. He was a consultant for a firm that assigned him to be a go-between for a muslim group and the white house, and to speak for them in that regard. He never reported to, or met, the "terrorist", who was no longer involved with the organization. The FBI itself has said the organization was not tied to terrorism. But those smearing Faisal Gill don't believe the FBI. I recommend the rest of you do.

-"to his law partner allegedly leaking the NSA wire tap program"

That is a false allegation unsupported by any evidence. The WPost article named the person who gave them the documents, it was the LEAD attorney who got them FROM the FBI. Asim also received a copy, which he returned to the FBI. His opponents are making charges without evidence. You are being deceived by people with an agenda that doesn't include the truth.

- "to rumors that Mr. Gill himself has filed legal challenges on behalf of Gitmo detainees (I can't find anything on that, but several lawyers report that is a very credible rumor)."

You sound here like the supporters of his opponent. You have NO evidence at all, but call a rumor "credible", but citing only unnamed people who also provide no evidence. They charge lacks ANY credibility. The IDEA that a person who worked FOR this White House and is an active Reserve JAG officer would file lawsuits against Gitmo is absurd. Those opposing Gill have made things up before, they have no qualms about posting completely unsupported things.

-"While I'd be willing to admit these rumors could be character assassination"

Well, they ARE character assassination. And you admit they could be, but seem to have no moral issues with perpetuating the destruction of a good man's character. He's not just a politician, he's a husband and a father, and his wife and kids have to live with watching their father/husband smeared with false charges in this "character assassination" you are supporting.

- "there are a lot of serious people seriously concerned."

I don't know who you are talking to, but the only "serious people" I've seen are people who don't know Gill and have never met him, and the people locally who have strong incentive to smear him at this point, since they have gone over the edge now and their only hope of remaining relevant is if they defeat him.

Of course, some people who just hear the rumors, and don't know Faisal, have some reason to be concerned. If I thought we were about to elect an overweight terrorist sympathiser with ties to illegal immigrant rings (yep, that's all things they've said), I'd be concerned as well.

Fortunately, we have good strong conservative republican OFFICEHOLDERS who have vouched for Faisal. They know him, have worked with him, have broken bread with him. The know his character. The White House hired him, Homeland Security gave him top secret clearance and then kept him on AFTER all the baseless charges against him. There's no reason to be "concerned" about what people who don't know him say about his character, he has impeccable character witnesses. I know Faisal a little, but I know some of these other men very well, and they are people that can be trusted.

- "The most troubling thing is that Virginia's campaign finance rules allow pretty much unlimited contributions and Mr. Gill has raked in a lot of contributions."

Faisal Gill is a unique candidate who, mostly I guess because he is a Muslim but also because he has integrity, is honest and believable, and is sincerely concerned about doing the right thing and serving his district honorably, attracts money from people who otherwise wouldn't look twice at a Republican. That is generally considered a GOOD THING. I doubt his opponent wouldn't trade places with his donations. By the way, his donations do not come in large amounts from a few people, but lots of different people have given him money.

- "While we should expect and not be troubled by a minority ethnic community supporting its own, a growing number of Virginians are concerned -- particularly because the Virginia Democrats are already hoping to destroy the Virginia GOP with Mr. Gill's candidacy."

If we are going to start picking our candidates based on what the democrats SAY they are going to do to them, we have lost the battle and might as well just let them win, because that is the talk of people who have no real values except victory. Shame on you for putting politics above principle.

There are republicans who will destroy our party with their unprincipled attacks on Gill. Our party should be open to all faiths for those with conservative principles.

-"You see, Mr. Gill has spread his wealth around and gotten a number of prominent endorsements."

Another baseless and offensive attack -- that our good conservative politicians were somehow BOUGHT by campaign donations. It saddens me that a so-called conservative would stoop to listening to and repeating those rediculous charges. I know these men, and they would not endorse a man of low character just because he donated money to them. In fact, he donated money to them because they themselves were good men, and we needed them to win to help our State. He not only gave money, but he gave his time and energy as well. That again is a good thing.

-"The Virginia Democrats have already been public about how they intend to tie Mr. Gill's questionable ties to alleged terrorists to those Republicans who endorsed him."

Actually, ONE virginian democrat who keeps insisting he ISN'T a democrat has done this, and several republicans who are trying to scare delegates into voting for his opponent have also said that. I'm sure Gill would gladly release people of their endorsements to protect them, but fortunately the men who have endorsed him are men of principle, and will not abandon a man they know to be of high character and principle just because a few malcontents are making noises.

I welcome the democrats trying to attack a good man for his faith and his outreach to a community that is normally more tied to their own party. I can't imagine those who vote democrat will take kindly to being called terrorists just so Faisal can be falsely labelled as a "terrorist sympathiser".

Thank you for listening.

In all the attacks on Faisal, his numerous strengths are obviously ignored. In fact, many attacks are designed to try to turn his strengths into liabilities.

For example, Faisal Gill served his country in the Navy out of College. He went to law school, and was a JAG officer and ethics officer. He is still in the reserves as a JAG officer.

Obviously, being a military man doesn't play into their picture of Gill. So his opponents decided to attack his service. First, they claimed he was too fat to pass his physicals. Faisal is not a small man, but he in fact does pass his physicals. The opponents have been told this, but continue to lie about it.

Second, Faisal used a family picture of him and his child with him in a uniform, in one of his flyers. This is acceptable, and it is common for members of our military who run for office to include pictures from a wide range of their life, including some with them in uniform. Gill NEVER wears his uniform campaigning, or in photos TAKEN for the campaign. We are just talking historical family photos.

But his opponents have claimed he violated the UCMJ. They even sent complaints into the JAG office, who apparently were snookered into saying they would look into it, which was reported as an "investigation". For all I know there could be someone now wasting money looking at this, but it would only take a few seconds to know nothing was wrong. Faisal has heard nothing, and obviously that would be the first step for a real investigation. I've asked for the name of the investigator, but the only name given was a woman who is actually on maternity leave -- some investigation.

Anyway, while I do not endorse Faisal Gill (I'm neutral in the race), I don't like smear campaigns, so I've taken it on myself to research and post the facts.

This has become hard though, because the blog that's driving all the anti-Faisal stuff has locked me out, they won't let me post refutations or even READ their articles anymore. They claim they are trying to "get out the truth", but that is hard when you censor opposing information.
