AFL-CIO desperate to stop "defection"

Spending big bucks to keep their party together

The AFL-CIO is sending out mail attacking John McCain, according to the Hotline. To whom?

The piece has been sent so far this cycle to more than 400,000 swing voters, notably those much-courted Reagan Democrats living in OH, WI, MI and MN.

Note that "Democrats" are swing voters. These "swing voters" are Hillary Clinton primary voters. These are people who have a high likelihood of becoming McCain voters.

AFL-CIO is terrified that its members are going to vote for John McCain. These are those white working class voters that Barack Obama seems incapable of appealing to. They are going to trash John McCain to their own base for the next 6 months.

This is not a sign of strength. They are going to be spending $53m more on this. That's a sign of desperation.

Black voters and the labor movement, have both given 100% OF their political power and allegiance to one party. That has got them exactly what in the last forty years?

Zip point squat, - that's not very much.

The fact that the unions are using the members' own money against them. I truly love it when lefty fat cats spend their millions on the Hilbama fight (and frankly when they waste millions on idiots like Edwards, Biden, et al.

But it saddens me (some) that the unions confiscate money from the little guys, and use it to (a) bully and intimidate the same little guys, and (b) buy political influence that serves the good of nobody but the union leadership.

Ultimately it does not sadden me all *that* much. Buncha dadgum sheep deserve their fate.

Right here in Cuyahoga County there are a boat load of union voters that will never vote for the guy that launched his political career from the living room of the Weather Underground over the guy that got his teeth kicked in because he refused to betray his country or his men. There's not enough class warfare and anti-trade rhetoric in the world to turn that one around.

There more money of their own members the AFL-CIO wastes on that lost cause the better.

When I was still in my fire service career the IAFF tried the same approach. Spent tons of union cash on supporting their Democratic overlords. When vote day came, most firefighters voted the person, and in many, many cases not the person the IAFF was backing. You see firefighters are like brothers. They share some things that are often not privy to others. Such is the bond. And when it comes to politics, most are very forthcoming as to their socio/political views and the value/strength of unions. I could never understand why unions take this approach knowing that those they represent are often choosing the "opposition". Perhaps this is one of the major reasons unions are on the decline just like the mainstream print media giants. Couldn't see the forest for the trees.

The mailing looks pretty effective to me. McCain is very, very soft. He won the primary basically by default as the last man standing in the Romney-Rudy fight between two well funded but very flawed candidates.

He has yet to be subject to a negative national campaign, and he is still behind Obama in most polls. Once Obama knocks off Hillary for good he will get a big boost as the party comes together. He'll probably get $150 million a month in hard money contributions (never mind the Soros 527 money) and will have a lot more stature as someone who rose from an underdog to a giant killer.

but this was the only thing I was able to salvage out of your comment...everything else was dead when I got here.

"He has yet to be subject to a negative national campaign"

So hope/change actually means five months of negative TV ads?

Why doesn't it surprise me

It's only misuse if it's used to support Republican/Conservative candidates/positions!!! Supporting Democratic/Liberal candidates/positions is helping the 'little people'!
