Another Californicator Endorses Hillary

Hillary Continues To Associate Herself With Political Adulterers

By California Yankee Posted in Comments (17) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom joined fellow Californicator Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and endorsed Hillary's bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Newsom is best known nationally for openly defying California state law in 2004 by directing clerks at City Hall to sanction same-sex unions. According to the Chronicle, Newsom's flaunting of the law made him a pariah within the Democratic Party. Some observers credit President Bush's re-election and the passage of constitutional amendments banning gay marriage in 11 states that same year on a backlash triggered by Newsom's lawlessness. Why would Hillary seek the support of a Democratic pariah?

Like Villaraigosa, Newsom is one of 12 national co-chairs of Hillary's campaign. In addition to advising on municipal issues and fundraising muscle, Newsom can also advise Hillary on political adultery. Newsom betrayed his campaign manager Alex Tourk—who was also one of the mayor's best friends—by sleeping with Tourk’s wife. Mayor Newsom was separated at the time of the affair (and later divorced) from television commentator Kimberly Guilfoyle.

Why is it that Hillary continues to associate herself with political adulterers?

On one or the other virtually indistinguishable cable television roundtables in which one of the experts there opined that Giuliani was going to have trouble because most Americans haven't (yet) become accustomed to the "ordinary practice" of people with money having multiple, relatively painless divorces.

She was actually being sympathetic to Romney, because in her mind it's just a fact of life that people now get married for a few years, break it off, decide to get divorced and remarried, etc., several times during their adulthood, according to their whims and what's "best for them."

Why would Hillary seek the support of a Democratic pariah?

Because he's not a pariah. Gavin Newsome is a mainstream guy when it comes to San Francisco and many of the other major cities in this country. I can tell you conclusively, for example, that it would be much easier to invite Gavin Newsome to speak at DePaul University in Chicago than it would to invite Brit Hume, not to mention Sam Brownback.

Second paragraph above should say: "She was actually being sympathetic to Giuliani..."

I have Romney on the brain this morning and I have a second window open right now, talking about him in a completely different context. My apologies.

So CC

Given the high standards set forth in this blog, what sould David Vitter's role in the Rudy G.'s campaign be now that "Hookergate" has been brought out into the open?

None of the Above !

Must we dwell on the personal behavior of candidates and their supporters? Like it or not, this is a two-edged sword best left sheathed, or too many of our preferred candidates will fall to the same charge. And would any sane person prefer a morally pristine Jimmy Carter to a libertine rake with decent public policies?

It's good theater for Gavin to endorse Hillary right now, especially since Act II of the Democrat Presidential Soap Opera has been all about John Edwards and Barack Obama attacking Hillary...

...Setting the stage for Act III and Act IV, in which Hillary will forgive Barack for all of his intemperate comments back in Act II and invite him to be her VP.

In the meantime, there's a lot of money to raise and the dramatic tension needs to be cultivated in order to accomplish that. Sheesh, don't you know anything about theatre? ;)

In addition to advising advice on municipal issues

Perhaps a little editorial editing could be edited :-).

Gone 2500 years, still not PC.

It's big money, and a lot of liberal San Franciscans have big money to spend. Somebody has to get that money, and it really comes down to asking: "Are you really going to give it to John Edwards or Barack Obama instead of Hillary?" This isn't Gary, Indiana -- it's San Francisco, California, and there's a gigantic wad of forthcoming campaign contributions in play. Gavin's helping out the Establishment Democrat in the field. Even he's not willing to bet on the whacko candidacy of John Edwards and Joe Trippi. Lots of San Franciscans were burned once by Howard Dean, and they're actually going for the safer, more boring bet this time.

I have a friend from College who lives in San Francisco and one of his criticisms of Newsom is that he's not aggressive *enough* in his support for Radical Change.

In San Francisco, Gavin Newsom is a mainstream, liberal-Establishment kind of guy, not a pariah (except among the people who think he should be even further Left), as this picture clearly shows.

It's got to be a lot of fun being the Mayor of San Francisco. He looks like a skinny, slicked-up version of Da Godfather.

Nobody seems to know, including Wikipedia, if his last name is spelled "Newsom" or "Newsome" -- so in keeping with his own ambiguity, I use both. Technorati and Wikipedia use the latter, others use the first exclusively, and frankly I'm not interested enough to ask him which he prefers.

... by San Francisco standards. He's certainly well-backed by The City's business interests. He's looking at a re-election campaign this fall with $1.6 Million in the bank and no electable opponent. (the filing deadline was yesterday, his opponents include one disgruntled but nondescript former city supervisor and a large field of loonys).

He's certainly socially liberal, no one could get elected in this town opposing abortion or gay rights, but he's been strongly criticized by the left for putting business and economic interests above social programs.

Don't doubt that he could yet be a Democratic party rising star. He sailed over the adultery scandal and the admission of a drinking problem without a dent to his popularity. You'll see him reelected in November without a hitch and another four years to build a substantial war chest to take something significant in Sacramento afterwards.

I've met him. I've taken his photograph for a local newspaper I do freelance work for. He seems a little fake and uses too much hair-gel. But he's a consummate politician, oh yes.

Poster is a little to the left of Gavin, though not much. Which means I'm a raving extremist liberal. OK.

I voted Harry Browne in 2000, but will never vote Ron Paul.

And for what it's worth, I belong to the species hetero sapiens.
